5w-30 for 2012 and 5w-20 for 2013.

I know that I am very challenged when it comes to anything mechanical.
But we are talking SAME engine. What's up with that ?

Pentastar 2012 - recommended oil is 5W-30
Pentastar 2013 - recommended oil is 5W-20

Are they for real ?
Can someone explain why the difference ? Makes no sense to me.

Exactly my thoughts.
If they changed their mind within two years for the same engine, there got to be the reason why.
Does that mean 5w-20 is better for that engine ?

Not necessarily. It might get slightly better MPG and Jeep needs all the help they can get to meet CAFE.

I've also heard of slightly better heat dissipation with the thinner oil which might help with cylinder head problems.

I'm on the fence as to which viscosity to use when I do my first oil change.

I wonder if Jeep even switched to 5W-20 as the factory fill for '13. Maybe they just changed the oil cap and owner's manual and used up their stockpile of 5W-30.

Generally speaking 5w-20 provides slightly less protection but slightly better fuel economy. If I had a 2013, I'd stick with 5w-30. However, the chance of an engine failure using 5w-20 is extremly slim. Maybe at the 300,000 mile mark, if that.

The same switch happened in my wife's Town and Country. She has the old 3.3 engine (cousin of the 3.8 in the 07-11 Wrangler!). Was 5w-30 for years, but in her 2009, they switched it to 5w-20 for CAFE standards.

Just use Red Line 5W-20 Syn. "Bob is the oil guy" lists it as his favorite 30 weight synthetic - 30 wt. because it is "very thick" for a 20 wt.

Bill, I never used Red Line.
I've been with Mobil 1 for the last 10 years.
Apparently you are happy with it ?
Is it readily available ?
Did you do any research and see any test results of Red Line ?

Remember M1 is does not meet Chrysler specs MS-6395. I'll use Pennzoil Ultra 5W-20 full syn as it is on the approved list.

Red Line is almost unobtanium. I've never seen it in a B&M store and refuse to pay freight for mail order oil.

I just had my oil changed at the dealer. I have a 2012 JKU Sahara purchased 5/1/2012. The 1st 4 oil changes are free. I asked the service rep. about this and he said "we use what is written on the oil cap".

It is weird that it was changed for Model Year 2013 but to maintain my warranty I too will use what is recommended in the owner's manual on what is on the oil cap.

Unless Fiat Chrysler Jeep writes me to amend my warranty to change oil, I won't.

Nope. Haven't used it. I just had noticed Bob-is-the-oil-guy's recommendation for it as a 5W20 that is more like a 5w30.

I was merely pointing out that M1 is not on the Chrysler approved list. I like it a lot but won' t use it in the Jeep until it says it meets specs. I know it does but Mobil has to prove it to Chrysler. So I' m go ing with Pennzoil Ultra.

Nice to see this topic boomerang. Actually read the "bob" site...it'll basically explain to you that within the vehicles normal operating range the working viscosity between 20W and 30W oil is not going to significantly affect protection. What WILL matter is the lubricity of the oil (which is not the viscosity, thus the two different words), the additive package and how effectively your engine circulates the oil.

You could have oil made of unicorn tears and adamantium flakes...if it's too thick to flow effectively in your engine, it won't be as good as a thinner oil that flows properly made from orc blood.

Pretty lame response by Mobil 1. Not sure why they are willing to loose sales for so many Chrysler vehicles. Time to step up. Castrol, Pennzoil, Quakerstate, and Valvoline conventional oils can do it you'd think Mobil 1 would try a little harder. While they are evaluating their timeline to start this testing, I'll evaluate my timeline to not buy their product.

Did you check the receipt that it said 5W30?
The dealer I went to (and where I bought it) used 5W20 and ignored my complaint about they didn't follow the manual and oil cap. Now, I do oil change myself.

The dealer I go to now uses 5W30 for all JK oil changes. You can't be denied a warranty claim based upon whether or not you use what's listed on the cap or in the manual.

they are banking on the fact that 99% of the people who drive chryslers don't check the bottle for the ms 6395 requirement or even know there is a ms 6395 requirement. I know it slipped by me and if not for this thread would not have thought twice about using it. Now if pennzoil and the other companies who meet the specs would start advertising that mobil1 does not meet specs for chrysler cars I bet mobil would get on the ball.

I was wondering the same thing. I bought a 2012 earlier this year. My wife liked it soo much I got her a 2013 JKU. I change oils at the same time and noticed the change. I was wondering which one to use. I called the dealer and the guy said to just use what is written on the fill cap

Except MPG rating between 2012 and 2013 is not different.

On my 2012 Dodge 5.7L Hemi Power Wagon the manual says to use 5w20 unless you are towing or in heavy duty service, then use 5w30. It also says 5w20 on the cap.

So obviously 5w30 protects the engine a lot better than 5w20, but 5w20 gets a little better milage.

Suffice it to say 5w30 goes into the Power Wagon and I'll be using 5w30 in the 2013 JKU as well. The 2001 TJ 4.0L gets 5w30 in the winter and 10w30 in the summer just in case anyone was wondering...

Now if your leasing or planning on not keeping your ride for 200,000 then don't even bother changing the oil!

My dealer service department did the same thing with my 2012 on the free oil change. Wasn't happy about them ignoring the cap label. Apparently their techs cannot read.

First time I had a dealer oil change, probably the last time too.

I believe the reason they made the switch for 2013 is that their flagship vehicle (ie #1 selling Chrysler vehicle), the Ram 1500 gets the Pentastar for 2013 and they likely do not want to have a disrepancy between recommendations for the same engine.

It is possible that it also bumps the Jeep up 0.1, 0.2 mpg--which does matter in terms of CAFE standards.

For my purposes I will stick with 5-30 being that I live in a hot climate and I could care less about 0.1 mpg-- I already get 23-24 when I cruise at 65.

Did my first oil change today on my 2013. Noticed only five quarts came out. Now I read somewhere she is supposed to take 6. I only have 3700 miles so that makes me curious. Think she burned up a quart that quickly?

Some burns off/gets used in all cars. Usually it's just a small amount. A lot of it saturates the filter, as well as gets stuck in the filter. You can pour out some of it but the stuff that saturates it won't come out easy. When I did my oil change I only had 5 come out too. It could have been slightly under filled from the dealer. 6qts gets you to the top of the safe zone. 5 to the bottom. So if they put it in the middle that's 5.5 quarts that they put in

6 qts is what they take dry and you never get all the oil out so it is not uncommon to get under 6 qts unless they were over filled. Overfilling can be worse then just a bit low.
