6 speed manual vs. 4 speed auto

Just curious as to why the manual is a 6 speed and the automatic is a 4 speed?

Shopping for a Jeep & I don't know how to drive manual but would like to learn. None of my friends have a manual I can learn on so I'm kinda stuck...
Would much prefer a manual transmission on a Jeep as an auto would be much less fun to drive - any thoughts?

First off welcome. i have a 6 speed and i must say if you want to have fun and you don't yet know how to drive a manual, then go with a auto. i find myself always just shifting from 4th to 6th because to me there's not much diffrent in 5th and 6th. gear. but thank about it with an auto you just put it gear and go. i like a manual because i like to shift and pluse the first jeeps were manuals so i guess i like the manual for that reason.

i have always owned manual transmission vehicals my entire life until i bought my jk unlimited. i can honestly say that yes a manual trans give the driver more control over the vehical. it alows you to get better gas milleage, more power when you want it and much more. but the auto trans does have its positive sides as well, like note have to worry about the clutch when sitting in traffic wich anybody who has a 6 speed can tell you it really sucks after awhile but i could not be happier with my auto trans in my jk.

now with that said i know there was alot left out, but i would never attempt to learn to drive a clutch on a brand new vehical. it can be done... but replacing the clutch on a brand new car off the show room floor is never a good thing. not too mention a clutch needs a break in period when first driven. i wouldnt think you would be able to properly break the clutch in with you learning to drive.

just my 2 cents, just enjoy the jeep regardless wich you decide to buy.

I'm a sticker. Been a sticker for a long time. Taught a lot of stickers too. Sister included and she is now a sticker. My daughter is a sticker. I've been a sticker for so long that I don't even think about the shifting any more it just happens "automatically". I find them more useful than automatics. I've owned very few automatics in over 30 years of driving but chose the standard in a jeep on purpose because of off roading including rock crawling. There will be others who will counter this reasoning but I'm convinced that it is more useful in varying situations and the jeep sees its share of varying situations. The choice of automatic or standard is a very personal one and each has there own reasons for why they choose what they choose. YOU will end up having to determine this for yourself. Look at my post history. You will see a lot of posts there on the subject. Good luck with your choice...whatever it may be.

As for why the auto isn't a six speed as well, I believe it has to do with cost savings for the OEM. Yes they do make autos with six or more speeds, but they cost a lot more and the performance is not enough to outweigh the cost for a vehicle like the jeep.

Myself, I will always drive manuals. They are more fun to drive, and replacing a clutch and maybe a gear every now and then is a hell of a lot cheaper than rebuilding an automatic transmission. With proper driving, a manual can last the life of the vehicle. The same can't really be said for a slush box.

Case in point, just replaced the auto on my wife's PT Cruiser at a cost of $3000.00 prox. with only 120K on the odometer. I have put twice that on standards with no transmission trouble.

Much easier to wheel an auto but I'd rather have a manual on the street.

But my wife can't drive a stick (tried to teach her and she destroyed a driveshaft on my truck) and I need her to drive me to the hospital when I have heart attacks, so I have an auto.

Bill, you forgot to put: in my opinion in your statement. I agree that some people say that it is easier to wheel an auto but I respectfully disagree. My opinion is just the opposite of that. I've seen more people on steep grades having trouble holding their auto transmission jeeps on the hill than I have holding a standard there. I have had no problems with this, especially in 4 low. Coming off of the clutch in 4 low it seems almost impossible to stall it. My jeep moves forward even with my foot on the brake when I come off the clutch. I almost have to force it to stall by standing on the brake. In 4 high, different story.

We don't disagree often Bill but this time we do.

Heh Heh, HD tells it the same is I would, as far as wives go, but

Having driven auto's/sticks, for a very long time, I wouldn't have another Corvette without a stick, or an off-road vehicle, without an auto !!

I’ve got over a million miles under my belt and I don’t care which I drive. Both are driven without a conscious thought of the tranny. That said, I currently have an auto. My wife will drive it when she has a larger item to fetch. Once we sell the business, she’s outta luck, manual will be in my next vehicle.

My son just took possession of a 2010 2 door JK Sport yesterday and my wife is furious that I allowed him to buy a Jeep with a manual tranny. I told Andy not to worry, she’s just pissed that she’ll never be able to drive it. If you have a female in your life that is as inflexible as mine, get the auto, but if not go for the manual. It’s always good to know how to drive both.

I just bought a new 2010 Wrangler Unlimited. My last vehicle had a stick and I loved it, but when I test drove a Wrangler w/ stick, I didn't like that it didn't have a dead pedal to rest my foot on when I wasn't shifting. It felt like I had to put my foot under the clutch, which wasn't comfortable for me and also didn't feel very safe. Also, my girlfriend can't drive stick, and most of my friends can't either, so it was really annoying when I needed someone to drive my car.

Something to consider is if you are going to be taking the doors off and either hanging your foot out or putting a foot peg on the hinge, it could be a little tricky to bring your left foot back in to depress the clutch in a hurry when suddenly braking.

I do love driving stick because you can get better gas mileage and you have more control over the vehicle, but I decided to go with an automatic because of the above reasons and the fact that I sit in traffic for an hour each way every day.

Now that you mention it, my left leg did get kinda bored, on long trips, so I got a "dead pedal"

Everything I say on here is my opinion; that's a "given"...

Depends on where you wheel. Deep sloppy mud, water, changing terrain? I don't have to worry about clutch woes.
It's fun to watch the manual guys rowing gears on tight trails while I'm sipping my frappuccino.

There are plenty of times I wish I had a manual though. But still, my wife can't drive it so it's not an option. I certainly would have one if she could.

To me the 6spd in the jeep was not an enjoyable tranny. The jk is my daily driver and I don't want to shift all the time. Combined with the fact that my wife will drive it on occassion and she can't drive a manual made the decesion easy for me.

In my OPINION it depends on 4 or 6 cylinder...test drove a 4 banger automatic and thought I would get run over. It would have to be stick for a 4 cylinder. Now as for as trail riding I will take my automatic 6 cylinder any day. Iv'e had to set and wait for my buddy to get up and over rocks at Tellico with a 4cyl stick when I would pull up to the rock and ease right up and over.

4 cylinder? Are you talking about the diesel we can't get here?

I have the 6 speed with 12K miles and love it. Only problem I have is with the hill brake that sets for a few seconds when starting on a grade. I have stalled because I forget it is holding me back. Minor thing, though.

Stick helps me stay close to 20 MPG so that's a plus, too.

I got the 6spd because my girlfriend can't drive an automatic, it confuses her - so she is relegated to the passenger seat serving her purpose - EYE CANDY

Its an individual choice. When I was young I always opted for the stick but now that I'm older I just prefer the auto. Both have some advantages and dis-advantages.

IMO - auto is better offroad for rock climbing. Relax and let the trans do the work. Besides, you need two hands on the wheel when it gets real fun.

Hmmmm......the fun really begins a that point for me. The only advantage that I can see for an automatic in that situation is being able to drink something with the free hand.

Jeeps are the easiest Manual to learn though. I bought my Jeep without knowing how to drive stick. About 2 hours in I was on the street, another 2 hours of testing random things, (like incline start ups, IN FLORIDA, took forever to find an incline), i was confident enough to drive it alone, you will stall quite a bit for about 2 weeks, then every so often for another 2, and then your good. after I learned stick on the Jeep, i went and had some fun at dealers with other manuals ive always wanted to drive! Good luck!

all joking aside, my first *new* car was 25 years ago - I bought it as a 5sp stick not knowing how to drive a stick. I had a friend drive it home for me.

It took me about a half hour to get the hang of the simple stuff, a few more hours of stalling, over reving, missing gears etc but I was in traffic at that point. Within a few days I had it down pat. Within a week if you closed your eyes, you would never know it was a stick shifting gears.

The Jeep can take the abuse trust me - and it isn't hard. Depending on your gearing, you may want to go that route anyway as the power, for lack of a better term, is lacking - the manual will give you more control.

Enjoy it regardless, that's the point
