At least the problem is farily common and actually acknowledged at the dealers nowadays. The dealership here didn't even bother giving me any kind of bull. Service advisor just said he'd order the revised first gear and synchro and scheduled me in for the next week.

I've done extensive searches on a couple of TSB web sites and can't find one mention of this TSB. Does anyone have a link or an actual copy of this thing?
Thanks

Took it to the dealer today and had the shifter boot replaced. Only time will tell now.

2011

Interestingly, the dealer just diagnosed our 2011 that was popping out of 4th (and sometimes 2nd) as the shift boot interfering.

The new boot for 2011 was sticking straight up like a cone, so he slid it down to put a fold in it. He put a zip tie around the shaft to hold the boot down for now, but he's going to put an o-ring on instead now that we've confirmed the issue over that past several days.

I can take a picture if my description doesn't make sense.

Did anyone other than me notice their improper use of the word "then" in place of "then" ?
Sheesh.

You all have pretty much convinced me not to buy a Jeep. I think Jeepsters have "battered wife (Jeep) syndrome" - "I know he beats me, but he's nice on weekends!" LOL I'd rather be on the road in something else then spend all my time at the Jeep Dealer. Since there was never a recall...think it might be corrected in the 2011's or is it more cost effective just to address when the owner complains.

Boy, if a crowd like this, with such an intense interest in and affection for their vehicles, convinces you NOT to get one, I want to see what would convince you.

If I were you, I'd spend a little time finding a vehicle-specific forum that has no complaints of problems and no mention of recalls for said vehicle.

We'll see you when you get back.

Well, that's your prerogative I guess.

But no matter what you buy it's still going to be a pile of nuts and bolts and things are going to go wrong leaving you sitting at the service department waiting on your vehicle.

I won't try to talk you into buying one. I WILL say that because of the type of use that Jeeps get they are a little more prone to things going haywire.
We buy them, we mod them and we take the top off and go crawl on rocks and stomp in mud puddles with them. THAT is what the Jeep thing is. If you play with your toys, they're gonna get broken and you're gonna have to fix them. Simple as that.

As far as battered wives syndrome. It's the Jeeps that get battered, and we're the abusers.

Ya can't do THAT in a Honda!

"Ya can't do THAT in a Honda! " No...but me and 99% of the prospective new owners won't be doing that! LOL I bet a lot of Jeep owners don't even know/or haven't gone in 4-wheel drive...like the 425hp Charger owners sitting in 5mph traffic on the Beltway! LOL Those pics are always cool...but certainly not the normal Jeep owner. My purpose - skiing - need a vehicle for steep WV switchbacks in snow. Unlimited owners up there have desuaded me from buying until the Pentastar comes out. ALL have the same complaint = 3.8 on pavement, highways, regular roads is weak & feeble. Heck I could take a Geo off-road if it had 4-wheel LOW...but I need it for normal diving.
P.S. - sat in a 2011 and don't think the cheap/hard leather seat covers are worth the $900 extra...and that tan color live - 'nough said.

Then why bother looking at them?

Funny, where I live I'm a "typical" Jeep owner. The first five pics I posted are all MY Jeep. I'm a 53 year old woman. Wife, mother, grandmother and I crawl over rocks with my Jeep whenever I get the chance.

My purpose - skiing - need a vehicle for steep WV switchbacks in snow.
I used to be a skier too, when I lived near snow country. Had a couple of other vehicles for the snow.. none as good as my Jeep was though.

Whatever blows your dress up buddy.

Who are you trying to convince? Go buy a Nissan or a Toyota and you'll be happy and be able to do your thing. Buy what you want. Get what makes you happy but you don't have to sit here and try to rile people up by just casting out negative rhetoric until someone takes the bait.

In the meantime, it's a beautiful day. I'm going to go drop the top on my Jeep and go play for awhile.

Funny, where I live - we don't have any rocks! Just highways. I need to go 100 miles on Rt66 @75mph followed by 100 miles of steep (5,000 climb) 2 lane switchbacks @>45mph...uh...in the snow. Dodge Charger would be great for the first half, H1 for the second half, Sahara Unlimited was to be my compromise, 'cept for the long climb up...hence waiting for the Pentastar.

For you TJ owners please do not pretend to understand anything about the JK... NEWS FLASH - They are two completely different vehicles!

Kate - I am happy you are enjoying your 2006 TJ, I also very much enjoyed my 2003 TJ Rubicon and believe they were basically bulletproof. The JK on the other hand is not and suffers from some MAJOR quality / design issues...

I'm enjoying mine. What MAJOR quality/design issues are you referring to? Because other than not being able to have SMS messages read back to me by the MediaCenter software (not what I'd call major ), my ownership experience has been 100% positive.

So is there any tell tail signs that you can think of that might lead you to think this could happen ? Such as transmission noises or slight poping?

No signs what so ever to indicate that it will pop out. It just happens. Waite I thought of one indication it's the model year, 2007 and newer

Well I hate to join this thread, but my 2010 Rubi just popped out of first today. It has about 10k miles, and this is the first time it happened. I was accelerating from a stop, it popped out of first violently and scared the crap out of me.

I just read through most of this thread. So is the best course of action to take it into the dealer right away? Or wait for it to happen more frequently so the dealer can replicate it?

Go to dealer ASAP

Go to the dealer asap to fix this problem The symptoms do not get any better and it does not cure itself. There is a repair advisory out for this problem. The dealer will replace first gear and a "synchronizer." It will take several days to repair because the dealer will have to order the parts from the Jeep factory. The same thing happened to many who post too this forum. If the repair fails to fix the problem, demand a new transmission. Tell the dealer to reference Technical Service Bulletins; TSB 21-001-10 or TSB 21-005-05. My Jeep was repaired about 6 months ago and has worked fine thus far; although I am keeping my fingers crossed. Also remember that there is a lfetime warranty on the drive train that includes the transmission.

Just had mine pop out of 4th this morning. It's a 2011 and seems to me it only happens when it's cold.

Has yet to pop out of 1st though.

Cheers.

My two week old 2011 pops out of 2nd when it's cold without grind. A firm solid shift is required until the transmission warms up. In general I find 1st, 3rd, 5th very crisp and positive while 2nd, 4th, 6th are soft with lousy feedback. Sad.

There is no longer a LTPTW starting with 2010.

Is your shift boot straight up like a cone, or folded over itself? Our dealer looked at ours and figured when the boot was straight up it was pulling back on the shift lever in the 2-4-6 positions, so he scrunched it down and put a tie wrap around the rod.

It seems much better now, but my wife said it's popped out of 4th on her a couple more times. She's taking it back to the dealer when it gets colder...
