800lb weight limit? Does a lift help/hurt?

I was really surprised to see an 800lb cargo weight limit on my 2012 jku...seems that would be hit with just 4-5 large adults, so seems REALLY low to me. I know it's gotta be close to accurate though as I've noticed when I'm loaded up for camping, 2-3 adults, lots of gear etc, I get weird rub sounds on tight mountain corners, not sure if it's tires rubbing or suspension or what. Everything is stock except aftermarket wheels (MB Chaos) to support essentially 33's (duratracs).

When I do a lift on this, can / will that potentially help and increase the weight limit?

Again, just seems kind of silly that the weight limit is essentially 4 large guys (200+lbs each)....Really?

Yes and no. Some lifts have stiffer spring rates than others. Tire load ratings come in to play. and then the gearing to move all that down the road.

The weight limit also takes the brakes into consideration. You still need to stop all that weight

They say that 800lb weight limit is like that because thats what was tested with the existing brake setup. They test the braking system to see how fast it can stop in what distance. Thats why its rated like that. It can hold more weight no problem, its just you have to give yourself more braking distance. Thats the main concern, also with the suspension yes but not so much. It would take a quite a bit of weight to damage something in the suspension.

So a lift could potentially increase the weight the vehicle can handle? I load up with usually 2-3 adults (big adults, 200+ lbs) 3 dogs, camping gear etc...on one trip looked saggy enough I made one of the others take their own car with some gear in it.

If I recall correctly, that 800lbs if after the driver. I think they use 150 lbs for the driver.

Keep in mind once you do the lift you'll probably want after market bumpers (more weight) then a winch (more weight) whatever lift you go with make sure they rate their springs based on aftermarket add ons...otherwise all those mods eat up your load limit...
An option...rent a small trailer if you're going somewhere for the weekend where you're taking a lot of stuff. There is a thread somewhere on here about a guy that used a HF trailer to make a set-up for camping...I was surprised how durable he felt the HF trailer was...something like 1780# capacity for $380!!

Sinister, I will likely do that in the future but likely the trailer will be a bit more than that (a boat, that I can put stuff in :-))

For non-water destinations though I should probably look into a small trailer...will do
