A Couple Questions on our 2012 JK

Hey Guys,

We took our TJ in for a new block heater and came home with our new 2012 Unlimited Arctic Edition. I've got a couple questions, I've asked the service guys and they act like they don't even know what I am talking about when I ask about these things.

We have the 430N RHB radio, and we cannot get the GPS to clear the max speed. We go to the settings by hitting the speed and try to clear the data and it will clear everything but the max speed. Some times it will 0 then jump right back to 77 mph the highest we have driven her.

I've been trying to load POI's and have followed all the posts and using a USB I cannot get it to load anything. We get PND did not update and that there is no data on our USB drive (mem stick).

Ours did come with the 321's and we are having it re-geared for the 373's for better drive-able and some light towing. We have a couple small hills on a 70 mph highway and the JK could not maintain 70 on either hill in 6th gear. Running the same route in 5th it did a little better and only lost 3 mph. We had a real windy day and it really had a tough time even in 5th
gear but we figure the new gears will help.

We are already having a issue with it jumping out of 4th gear and they are going to look at it when they re-gear it next week.

I forgot to add they are putting in the front suspension bolts mentioned here that should be changed out also ( I did order from the vendor listed here it with free shipping ).

Here's a couple shots the night we took her home.

A regear costs $1500 to $1800. Unless the dealer is doing it for much cheaper, you don't want to spend that kind of coin to go to 3.73s. In 6th gear at 70 mph, 3.73s will only give you a whooping 300 more RPM than you run right now. Hardly worth almost $2 grand. Go to at least 4.10s or even 4.56s.

Thanks MTH,

We only do a little 4 wheeling up here and this is a DD for us, we are
planning on a few road trips and we are hoping this will be enough releaf.
The dealer is giving us a good deal on it and with the extended warranty
we don't want to mess with our coverage.

This also gives us the 3500 lb towing but we just are looking at pulling
1600 lbs locally.

We'll update after our re-gearing to let you know if it works the way we
want.

that is still an awful expensive option. if there is any chance at all you will EVER put any tires on there bigger than stock you really should go with 4.10's.

Paying to regear to 3.73 is a mistake. That's all there is to it. And while the dealer will no doubt cover their work (as should any good shop), it won't be covered by your Chrysler warranty. That's my two cents.

Are you sure you have 3.21's and not 3.73's? Artic's are a Sahara model. I thought Sahara's come with 3.73's? I could be completely wrong. Thought they are a "part fo the package" for Sahara's.

Give that new Pentastar a few miles to break in as the power is not at 100% yet thanks to the computer.
Then decide if you really need to re-gear or not.

I learned that I WAS wrong. Just suprised to see an Artic with 3.21 gears? I understand you can get what you want on any vehicle but I would think for a special edition it would be included>oh well.

3.21 (DMC) is standard for 2012, 3.73 (DME) come standard with the Max tow package (AHQ). It appears the OP has a M6 transmission.

Wow,......so how much difference is there in RPM between 5th and 6th gear with the 3:21, he has now?

Not sure, but I'd guess a few hundred based on my 3.8 with 3.21s. And that's a good point--he could just downshift to 5th to get similar gains at the top end. For the cost, he really should go to at least 4.10s, and that's only if he's sticking with the stock tires.

Up to him of course, but the notion of paying $1000+ dollars to go from 3.21s to 3.73s is just bananas to me.

We'll have to talk to them Monday then, if it screws up our warranty I'll tell them to keep the parts, no one said anything about messing up our warranty.

Thanks MTH

On the RPM'S we were driving home and did 5 gear and 6th gear tests, I'll have to get my notebook out of the Jeep tomorrow, can't remember it at all off the top of my head.

We are keeping the stock tire sizes for us, 99% of our driving is on the roads and up here in the Flat Lands we don't have much for getting off the roads. But we will only drive 4x4's up here year round, I won't own a two wheel drive, now our motorcycle is another matter.

The day we tested the Jeep out on those hills 5th gear did pretty good.

Thanks again guys.

I am seeing the same behavior out of my 430 radio, after a reset it jumps right back to an 80 mph max.

It won't screw up the warranty, but the gears themselves won't be covered by Chrysler, just the dealer. The rest of the warranty remains intact. Download a copy of the warranty manual from jeep owners website. Your jeep is covered by Chrysler as it left the factory.

We'll we got out and got our data again.

50 mph (5) 1800 rpm, (6) 1400 rpm

55 mph (5) 1900 rpm, (6) 1500 rpm

60 mph (5) 2100 rpm, (6) 1675 rpm

65 mph (5) 2250 rpm, (6) 1800 rpm

70 mph (5) 2400 rpm, (6) 1950 rpm

75 mph (5) 2600 rpm, (6) 2075 rpm

Another reason I want to change to the 373's is that is what
was in our 02 TJ, I really do not want to be on a steep hill in
traffic and want to start out with this gearing we have now.

Our gears are in and we are supposed to set up our appt next
week, I'll keep you posted.

If we were not taking cross country trips with this I would go with
lower gearing but since this is our daily driver we are hoping for
a middle ground.

Thanks again guys.

4.10s would be better in every way, as would 4.56s. I can honestly say I've never heard of anybody paying to regear to 3.73. Strap yourself in and prepare to notice a slight improvement!

Agreed, maybe I am taking crazy pills but I noticed a change in driveability at about 1k miles and then again at 3k miles.

OK GUYS!!!!!!

We got our Jeep back tonight, they had it in the shop and I pulled it out to the front to move our stuff back into our Jeep and my salesman asks how was it, I had to stop and think but I did not have to give the jeep any gas to pull out of the shop. It's great now so far. We took it around a little and headed home.

We had some time to do the route that we did the other week that the jeep could not handle with those gears. This time in 6th gear she went right through them and even my wife said it is pulling this time, it only dropped 1 mile an hour where it was dropping 8 miles an hour. It really feels like I though it should so we are happy so far.

Tonight we did these speeds with the new 373 gears.

50 mph (5) 2200 rpm (6) 1700 rpm
55 mph (5) 2450 rpm (6) 1975 rpm
60 mph (5) 2659 rpm (6) 2050 rpm
65 mph (5) 2900 rpm (6) 2250 rpm
70 mph (5) 3050 rpm (6) 2500 rpm

The jeep really feels better now. We've got to run to the VA on Monday and will get some highway miles and get some mpg's figures.

So for us this was enough change for the way we are outfitting our Jeep.

Thanks guys, we will see if the good vibes continue. One thing I noticed it felt like our old TJ after we had put in a high HP fuel pump and the better HP injectors

If you are paying over $1,000 for regearing including parts you are getting screwed.

Our sticker showed 3.21 as standard equipment. The 3.73's we got were an add on because of the tow package(can't remember which one right now though). It also came with a transmission cooler and some other goodies.

Are these just rough-eyeball-quick-glance-down estimates? Because those are the numbers for 4.10 gears that I got back out of a gear ratio calculator.

We set the cruse and used the gps for speed as it is easier to read and then I looked at the speedometer and then the rpm a couple times each, for each reading. a couple of the rpm could be 25 off but without a digital tach that is the best I could see. We did this for two runs to recheck our data.

I forgot to add my wife was doing the writing as I was driving.

That restaurant is in downtown East Grand Forks across from Cabelas.
There is a huge bar in it that goes back to the gangster days and it use
to have good food. Been sold a couple times and we ate there that night
it will be the last time for us, the food was terrible.

OK Something was wrong here, on our way home running 70 mph I did
notice we were passing a few vehicles not real fast but we were going
faster than most. We went out today and I threw in our Garmin NUVI
550 and checked the speedo, well our speedo was running about 6 mph
slow.

We went to the dealer and talked to the Service Manager and he figured
the mech forgot to recal the speedo for the new gears. He got out the
laptop and looked up the menus but there was no where to reset the gears
in the new software. So they have to call Chrysler Monday and get them
to reprogram my VIN with the new gears.

We took off for our ride anyway and I just used my GPS to keep me out
of trouble. We did rerun the RPM Speed Tests and it looks like you were
on the money Mike with where we should be. One thing I want to mention
that with the 373's we can run 6th gear at 40mph and accelerate, I am very
satisfied with this gearing and drive-ability we have now. We re-ran
those hills today with it only dropping one mph and we ran headwinds with
no problem with speed or power.

New Stats with 373 gears___________ 321 gears

50 mph (5) 2025 (6) 1600 __________(5) 1800 (6) 1400
55 mph (5) 2250 (6) 1780 __________(5) 1900 (6) 1500
60 mph (5) 2475 (6) 1900 __________(5) 2100 (6) 1675
65 mph (5) 2700 (6) 2100 __________(5) 2250 (6) 1800
70 mph (5) 2850 (6) 2250 __________(5) 2400 (6) 1950
75 mph (5) 3050 (6) 2450 __________(5) 2600 (6) 2075

I notice that I can start out in second like I could with my TJ, I also
can use 5th and 6th alot more in our driving than I could, I can also
skip a gear or come up when a light changes and do a rolling start
in a higher gear. I have not stalled my JK once since the gear change,
but I did a few times starting out in first or trying to do a rolling start
in second it just would not do it.

I don't know if you guys want more data but I'll check my figures again
when they get me reprogrammed.

I hope this helps someone else, is this data worth posting in it's own on
321 vs 373 gears.

Thanks again for all your help guys, I was starting to think I was making
a mistake not going lower but it is doing just what we hoped for. Thanks
again. For us not running larger tires this is just what the doctor ordered.
