A great Jeep brother and the 3.6

I met Blackforestgreen this past weekend. A couple weeks ago he pm'ed me and asked what year Jeep I had. He had an extra set of tinted soft top windows and asked if I wanted them. I was planning on slipping over the border into Jersey at the end of the month so we arranged a clandestine meeting in a north Jersey parking lot.

We were talking Jeep when he asked if I had ever driven the Pentastar. Before I could finish saying no, he flipped me his keys and told me to take it up the highway. He has a 2012 Sport with an automatic and 3:21 gears. I was actually looking forward to seeing my first black forest green Jeep in person, however his is just black. (don't ask, this story is long enough).

My first impression was that I really liked the new dash. It felt kind of roomy without the center stack. I also really liked the graphite trim on the vents and grab handle. (Tomthumb, are you reading this?) Two minor issues struck me. It seemed dumb to have a hole where the power window switches would have been. 07-10's have the switches in the same place, but they cover that when they are not present. The other thing was the steering wheel, it seems a little smaller. It didn't feel bad, but the gauges were blocked. Granted, I didn't adjust the seat or anything, so it might be a non-issue.

Steve wanted me to air it out and see what it could do, but I can't do that with someone else's vehicle. (at least not since that time in HS when I drove my friend's '71 Challenger). I drove it like I would normally drive. I have never driven an automatic JK, so I didn't have a good frame of reference to go by.

I was really surprised at how quiet and smooth the engine was. I was half expecting it to tick like a half full rock tumbler. There was no mistaking this for anything other than a 6 cylinder. It was certainly not the "rocket ship" I have heard people compare it to. The pick up was no better than my 3.8 manual 3:73.

My only real frame of reference is my 08 Liberty with the 3.7 (210 hp), automatic, and 3:73 gears. It did not feel any more powerful than the Liberty and in fact did not feel like it had as much "low end."

That being said, the automatic 3.8 must really suck a$$ if it is that much of a night and day difference. It would definitely be interesting to drive a manual 3.6 some time.

All of the 3.6 stuff aside, the real point of this is the Jeep brotherhood (and WF). A complete stranger offered me an expensive gift AND tossed me the keys to his new baby. Where else does that happen?

Does it fit flat? It looks too narrow.

It's about 1/2" too narrow so it sits on a bit of an angle, but it goes pretty much all the way in.

The reason it lacked the power you expected is because his 3.21 gears. With that gearing you just don't get the power potential of the engine. I've heard a night and day difference between 3.21 and 3.73 geared '12s. But I hear ya about the brotherhood. Nothing like it lol

A rare Daggo original post.

Good stuff. I have yet to drive a 3.6, but I'm sure they're nice. Always fun to check out another jeeper's ride.

As to the group we've got here, I've gotten tremendous and selfless help doing some of my installs, particularly from ESP and Djstorm, but others as well. Really just an outstanding crew.

Very cool.

Not only letting you cruise his rig, but giving you some tinted windows, as well.

And isn't weird driving an auto?

I've been driving a manual for all of two years (all autos before the JKU) and yet every time I hop in my wife's auto trans Yukon my left foot reaches for the clutch to start it. Sometimes I find myself looking to put it in neutral at stop lights or clutching in as I pull into parking spaces before I turn it off.

I'd let practically anyone in this forum drive my Jeep.

If there's one thing I've learned here, it's that you folks truly appreciate the machine.

Plus, this place is about as douche free as any forum I've ever seen.

That's great. A plus with the windows. I would do the same but I don't have extra windows. Nice drive report. I'm sure the 12's are real nice. I wouldn't trade my 10 Rubi 6spd. I'm not bashing autos but I believe with a 3.8 it's nice to have a choice with a manual and gears help a lot with it. Any JK improvement I'm for no matter how much or little of a change. I still even like my 4.2 YJ. Never drove an auto JK or a 3.6. Anyone have keys.

I constantly leave my wife's Liberty in gear when I shut it off and then can't figure out why the key doesn't come out.

I still do that occasionally in my Jeep - this is my first auto (Jeep anyway).

This place does rock. I was blown away when a few of my fellow CT Jeepers offered to help me do my LCA's.

There's actually even more to it, but I was trying to keep it somewhat condensed. When I got into town I called Steve and his wife answered. I explained who I was and then spoke to him. After we met he starting asking about people with my same last name. It turns out that his wife actually knows several of my relatives. I'm also pretty sure that I know her as well.

I drove a 2011 Wrangler Sport about a year ago, it's been awhile for the comparison but it feels like my 3.6 pulls much better even at 2-3k RPM which is where I'm at for normal city driving.

Also driving up a 6% gradient at 10,000FT it was pulling just fine at 2K rpm, didn't feel like I had to make it downshift

Good story. I would let many forum members drive my Jeep too, if there were any reason for them to want to do so.

I won't drive the 3.6, because I'm afraid I would want one!!! I'm plenty satisfied with my 3.8 and automatic tranny. A re-gear, and perhaps a supercharger, might be in my future. But I see no compelling reason to switch to a Pentastar right now. Should Jeep have a diesel option, then THAT might make me "trade up"!!!
