A hole where there should be one?

Last week I removed my rear left tail light assembly to check something out. When the assembly was removed I happened to look into the hole. I was surprised at what I saw. THE GROUND! The hole is in the area of the rear tire. This would probably be no problem for people that don't live in a snow area, but I do. Seems to me that the rear tire would splash snow and salt up inside the rear fender where it would freeze and cause rust. Probably in a year or 2 rust would start showing. I don't know about the right side. I have not checked it out yet. Just thought I'd mention this in case mine isn't the only one. I took it in for it's first oil change yesterday. When I mentioned it to them (the service department) they didn't seem to care.

These things are pretty simple and straight-forward. Probably not using any more metal than necessary. If the back of the light assembly wasn't muddy, salty, etc., wouldn't worry about it. Probably won't splash up there.

Also, I'm not in a rust area but I would guess these things are pretty much rust proof.
Would guess they are are built about the same so just enjoy and have fun!
