About to buy an '08 tomorrow - No tow hooks!

What are my options on an '08 that doesn't have one of those bumpers that have the tow hooks built-in? If I end up buying it tomorrow, I'd like to take it wheeling this weekend but it will be my first time at Turkey Bay and if I need some tow help, what are my options? Would I just be S.O.L?

I don't have the funds to replace the bumpers yet. Where else can a tow rope be hooked up if I get in a bind?

So I asked over on the other thread, but is this an addition to the fleet or are we trading the TJ in? I think you will really, really, really have to try to get stuck at Turkey Bay this weekend. Really. It's very dry. I wheeled it by myself two weeks ago this coming Friday, and it hasn't really rained since then.

??? What link?

As for the fleet, I'll be giving up my Charger for this. Definitely mixed feelings about that. I've got a lot of love wrapped up in that Charger.

A link to the dealers website or pictures of said Jeep.

I don't think you'll miss the Charger.

The Dirty Mudder thread. You broke the news over there in refrence to having JK seats for a pattern if it works out tomorrow. I'll really have to try and make it to TB this weekend if you two are bringing two Jeeps!

Good luck with that. I've been trying to talk her into it for months. As far as the tow hooks, check the for sale and for free sections of the various forums. Some people sell the hooks and some give them away. I gave away my entire front bumper including the hooks.

If we can get the negotiated price worked out with the bank tomorrow, I'll have my own Jeep to play with.

We would be twins!*

What is the negotiated price if you don't mind me asking? I got my '07 with 22k on it a little over a month ago for 17.5k.

I have the same issue on my rear bumper - no tow hooks.

In the process of looking for hooks that were not insanely priced (apparently some companies think these things are filled with gold), I purchased a very sturdy D-Ring on a hitch receiver. I'm questioning how smart that was because since then, I've read that it might not be a good idea to winch your Jeep out of a hole using the trailer hitch.

Can someone confirm that or set me straight? I don't want to go ripping my tow package out from underneath my Jeep if I get stuck.

Thanks,
Joel

Yes - you can use the trailer hitch.

I have one of these and used it a LOT with my Land Rover. I expect I'll be using it with my Jeep for the next few years until Warranty expires and I start to mod ...

Actually, tow hooks don't require a bumper replacement, simply a couple of cuts into the plastic bumper itself. The actual tow hooks bolt onto the metal structure under the plastic wrap. So it will involve unbolting the plastic wrap, cutting a couple of holes, bolting on the hooks and rebolting the plastic. Sounds like an evening project to me so long as you can lay your hands on some hooks!

Alternatively, I'm guessing a recovery strap wrapped around a major frame member will serve the purpose if recovery should become necessary.

You can use the rear tow hitch for recovery, it's just not a good idea to use the trailer hitch "BALL" as the hinge point for a recovery-

If you have a rear hitch setup in your jeep, you can use the "hitch pin" for an anchor, or a D-Ring, or a Lunnette hitch--

Just don't try it with front bumper hitch's

Good luck

Yeah, which is why I got the D-Ring adapter. Didn't make sense putting a snatch strap on a slippery round object.

i just took off a set of tow hooks on my JK. you can have them for the price of shipping...they will fit in a USPS medium box for $11.40, give me $15 for taking them over there and my trouble and ill get them to you in a few business days. take 1-2 hours to install them under your bumper.

take the old bumper completely off (4 bolts on each side) plus the plastic screws holding on the air dam

unbolt the metal frame of the bumper (8 bolts)

replace the bolts with the tow hooks and start the bolts but dont tighten

cut holes in the current bumper where the tow hooks come through, side bumper over and back on

tighten all 10 bolts down and your good to go.
