In my new 2014 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara I added a storage rack in the cargo area by modifying a Harbor Freight cargo carrier. Here are the parts list and costs:
Harbor Freight ATV cargo carrier # 67623 31.50, 2 - 24" x 3/4" tubing 6.00, 2 - 2"x2" bracket 1.88, 4 - 5/8" self starting metal screws 0.32, 2 - 1.5" x 1/4" bolts with hex and wing nut 2.60, 4 - 2.0" x 1/4" bolts with wing nuts 6.00, 10 - 1/4" flat washers 1.50, 1 - can of Walmart gloss black spray paint 0.97, 4 - 3/4" tubing plastic plugs: Gross Materials 54.37Sales Tax 4.49Total Net Cost 58.65.
Takes a little time to set it all up, repaint all parts to match, but sure beats 216.00 for aftermarket racks.
Got the HF carrier on sale for 42.00 less .25% coupon.
The 24" legs were attached with 2 each 2" bolts in .291" holes drilled in tubing and carrier support. Inserted the plastic plugs in both ends.
Used wing nuts for quick and easy removal of the cargo rack.
Suggest you store only light items on rack or otherwise tie them down good and tight in case of wreck. Don't want a trailer hitch or jack flying up and hit you in the back of the head. Also, if secured heavy items are stored, you may want to secure the rack's legs to the cargo floor with angle brackets and metal screws.
Also removed rear seat head rests and tucked the head rest's support bars under the cargo rack to have a better view out the rear window. When someone rides in back, just have to slide head rests back on the support bars.
