After only five days and 220 miles, my new JKU is in the shop

Driving to work this morning, the check engine light came on and everything started running super rough. The engine died three times over the five miles to the dealership... I'm sitting in the waiting room now, fuming, and just praying that this is not evidence of things to come. I waited a year to buy this thing, saved up for the down payment, stretched as far as I could to make it work, and now the damn thing is broken down.

220 miles...

Member here had a similar problem. Back and forth to the dealer. Turned out to be a short in the electrical system. Not sure where or why?
Have them check all the wires/electrical.

Wow that blows. I would be pissed too. Make sure you save your documentation and get names/times/dates of every person you deal with just in case.

Any mods yet or all OEM?

Sometimes dealing with a couple of early hassles leads to a long happy life afterwards.

Just trying to stay positive.

All OEM. Getting a rental car now, I just went up to the service guy and asked him to just get me a car. Otherwise I'd just be sitting there angry, he smiled and complied. And Strider, I'm usually the positive one too, so I really appreciate the sentiment. I'll keep you all updated.

And hey, what a great way to meet a few of you on this forum. Thanks for the support guys.

Lemon Law Tips

KEEP A COPY of all documentation you have regarding your vehicle and its history. This includes all repair orders, purchase contracts, warranty book and owners manual that came with your car.
TAKE WRITTEN NOTES of all conversations you have with your dealership and repair technicians concerning your vehicle and its “lemon” potential. Include the date, time and what specifically was discussed. This includes phone calls and in-person contact.
ASK ABOUT TSB’s, or Technical Service Bulletins, instructions from the manufacturer that alert dealerships of specific defects or necessary repairs in certain models. If you don’t ask your dealer might not present you with this information, so speak up and ask your technician to write your request on the repair order.
PREPARE A TIMELINE if you have many repair orders in your possession, to organize each repair attempt by date, the number of times the vehicle has been in the shop, and how many days total your vehicle has been out of service.
DO NOT BE DISCOURAGED by your dealer, repair technicians, or others who might tell you the problems you are experiencing with your vehicle are minor and that you do not qualify under the lemon law for any sort of relief. ONLY AN ATTORNEY who is licensed to practice law in the state where you purchased your vehicle and has some familiarity with the lemon law, can make that determination!

hope you won't need this.. but I don't operate without an attorney on call. watch the video and good luck.

Okay, back from the dealership. According to the service rep, the computer needed an update. I then asked him, "if the computer needed an update, it needed that update on Saturday when I bought the thing... why is the problem only coming up now?" His response, "good question, I have no idea. Your jeep just returned an error code, and our Jeep information tells us to do a computer update if the Jeep returns this specific error code. That's all I can tell you."

So, the problem does indeed seem to be fixed, but there certainly is a bad taste in my mouth. I just wish I lived near Pat @ Fields Jeep... lol

Oh, and Dalearyous, its a 2012 JKU Sahara.

Thanks to everyone for chiming in, I mentioned it in the new comers introduction area, but I feel like I should say it again... this forum played a HUGE part in my decision, and my research. I really felt like I was making a very informed purchase, which is nice.. so thank you! Now if I can just stay out of the shop for a few more miles... lol

Ours needed a computer update. 2 days later light was back on and we were replacing the head.
Everything is running fine now.

It's a Jeep thing. Dont get frustrated new vehicles tend to have bugs to work out. I have a new 2012 Jeep that only had 150 miles one week ago and needed a new Power Steering gear Box as it was leaking. Frustrating yes, but covered by warranty. I always expect a few bugs with a new vehicle.

My wife just purchased a new 2012 GMC Terian. The next morning she woke up to a large puddle of transaxle fluid on the floor. Vehicle was towed in and repaired, faulty transaxle seal and the vehicle only had 15 miles.

See it's just not a Jeep thing.

Oh yeah, my wife got a new car because I was a bad boy and bought a new Jeep

Hang in there, you will love your Jeep.

I just had the same thing happen with mine. I had 580 miles and had to bring it in for the same reason. I'm at over 800 miles and no other issues. *knock*knock*

A 'computer update' is a piss-poor answer, for why a vehicle quit running three times, in five miles. I'd be livid, if that was the answer they gave me.

I'd be very careful to document.

Secondly; the service advisor said "that's all I can tell you", which is either a statement of "I don't know" or "I know, but you don't deserve to know". Both are unacceptable. Remember YOU PAID FOR THIS REPAIR. When you signed that warranty slip, that authorized the dealer to bill Chrysler. No signature, and Chrysler doesn't have to pay the dealer. This means it YOU, your warranty which was included in your purchase price, that is paying this bill. Because you are paying the bill, you deserve to know what was wrong with the car. What was the code? What happened internally, which caused the vehicle to stall? What was the reprogramming supposed to accomplish? You have a right to know.

I know this probably won't help the way you feel, but I for one have always wanted any and all problems to occur as early as possible. Better at 220 than 36220

I'm a firm believer in getting the demo model off the floor. My '11 JK had 550 miles on it when I bought it. The owner of the dealership liked to cruise around in it, which is fine with me, as any bugs are worked out prior to me getting it. Of course, it wasn't near as cool when he drove it.

Jeep may have one of the highest resale values but it also is one of the worst brands in terms of reliability. It is a strange combination. I bought mine used and have not had any problems. Good luck.

Lol nice. ^^^^
I had the same problem, stalling and trouble starting, it had around 500 or 600 miles on it. Dealer fixed, I for get what it was now, but I have not had a problem since.
Nock on wood.
I posted about it, thinking it was bad gas but it was not the gas.

Not shocking that the tech didn't know more. In the age of computer controlled vehicles they only know what the scan device tells them. Be glad it threw a code so they had something to go by. Otherwise you would of got the standard "sorry unable to duplicate" response. Our BMW dealer is exaactly the same. Not limited to Jeeps.

X2

I had a friend have some electrical stuff fry at like 36003, something ridiculous...No remorse from dealer, full charge.

That would make me more mad than not having a warranty from the get go.

It shouldn't. Remember, these are the exception, not the rule. The difference is, you have 2 or 3 people posting when they have a problem. The other 3000 members don't get on here and start a thread with "my jeep ran fine today with zero issues"

X2. Just think how many wrangler owners frequent these boards, whether they are members or not. IF there were to be a problem, they would certainly register and ask questions about their issues. There really aren't too many threads that pertain to problems on wranglers. If you visit other forums from other makes/manufacturers, it's amazing how many serious issues come up with regards to repairs and maintenance. As far as I can tell, wranglers seem to be pretty robust and very well manufactured. Hell, I wouldn't have sold my trusty explorer if my dad's 2010 Rubicon hadn't been so impressive.
