Aftermarket Hard Tops...OEM Hard Tops???

Mrs. H and I were Wrangler shopping recently and one of the Unlimited models we found at the dealership only had the factory soft top.

The salesman discretely told us he doesn't even know why they brought it in (eastern Canada - extreme weather/cold/snow for up to 4+ months).

But...if we did pull the trigger on it, what are our hard top options after we drive away from the dealership?

Apparently, if we ordered an OEM hard top from the parts dept at the dealership we'd be looking at huge $$$$. Actually, I don't recall the price he quoted us, but it would negate the savings on the MSRP of the rig.

I figured another option would be to do an internet search for an OEM hard top. There MUST be someone out there who wrote their current generation Unlimited off with the hard top sitting safely in a hoist back home in their garage...

What are the aftermarket options...is there a model that's comparable in quality and reasonably priced?

Not really to be honest. The one I'm thinking of is a fastback (offroad heroes maybe??) an is crazy expensive. Looks great but it not cheap. Check Craigslist/here they come up pretty often actually just have to get lucky. Dealer won't do a trade with you? Walk in and say you want a hardtop and want them to credit you for the soft top in trade towards a hardtop. Should be able to oblige with that.

It's definitely not offroad heroes! I believe you are referring to the wild boar top HERE Anyhow, good luck with the hardtop search. I'm sure someone will be selling on craigslist or ebay.

If you think you will want a hardtop buy it with the jeep or be prepared to spend a couple thousand after the fact. Many soft tops for sale on kijiji for example but rarely a hard top.

I had a soft top only in Saskatchewan, so cold winters, and it was fine. Yea it's louder and perhaps a touch colder but the heater blows like crazy. I never found the windows fogged up or had any issues really. I have a hardtop now as I randomly stumbled on one for 700$, which I wouldn't count on happening again...for me and my neck of the woods anyway.

Don't forget you'd need to wire it for the rear defroster....possibly the rear washer as well I'm not sure if the stock washer/wiper control has provisions for the hard top on all of them either. You would also not get a warranty on your hard top if it starts leaking or has cracking issues down the road.

To me it would certainly not be worth buying a Jeep that didn't come with a hard top, I want a hard top with a rear window defroster in the winter time so I can have a bit of visibility out the back...a Wrangler is blind enough as it is without not being able to see out the rear window. A defroster and washer is a must $.02

In my neck of the woods (southern US), hard tops are a regular item on Craigslist. Given where you are, I'm guessing that there's more wanting to have them than sell them, so it's very unlikely that you'll have much luck finding one, and if you do, probably a long wait and no bargains to be found. As Dixiedog points out, if you get your Jeep with the factory hard top, you'll have all the defroster/washer connections in place, otherwise you'll have to deal with that inconvenience.

Sounds like your dealer is right in questioning why they even bothered bringing that one in with soft top only. If trying to purchase a hard top later would consume any savings on the Jeep, then it's not really a deal anyway and you're better off paying for the factory hard top now and not having regrets later.

Our Jeep came with a soft top only but is already wired for a hardtop so I don't think you should have to do anything special.

I think you should try your first winter with the soft top, it really isn't that bad, ifyoustill need a hard top, there are used ones here in Illinois and Wisconsin for anywhere from $1000-$2000. Good luck

Sorry, I typed that last night at like 12:00 something…killing time trying to get sleepy. When I read it this morning I kinda came off as rude. Sorry that wasn't my intention.

You might look at Durmat and luxury liner pro your doors and floors. Cheeper than a hard top and does an amazing job keeping the vehicle warm if done right.

Good advice folks. Thanks.

The soft-top only was a '14 and the sticker was lower than the '13s beside it (reflecting the lack of the hard-top option)...

..HOWEVER...the '13s had a ~$3500 discount right off the start-line before, as the salesman said, "I can work my magic."

The aftermarket hardtops alone cost as much (or more) as the Dual top option from the factory.

The best advise that I can give is to just order the Wrangler and get exactly what you want (need). Join Tread lightly and get the 1% below invoice deal....you will come out ahead of any deal that the dealer can "work his magic on".

When I had my TJ....I ordered it with vinyl seats, a Dana 44 rear and a Dual top option. Best move I ever made with a vehicle.

Ours was down inside the passenger side rear tailgate area. Not in the tailgate itself but just before it in the body. Found it when I was running wires for our CB.

For this reason, I am ordering my jku with hardtop and listing it for sale after it arrives. I rather the jeep have that stuff in place in the unlikely event I decide to go back to hard top.

Here some non oem options
hard top

Oem
hard top oem

Wonder why 2dr is cheaper than 4dr?

Finding used one off Craigslist is the way to go. Or go for a different jeep from the get go.

I did a search on kijiji for hard tops in Ontario last night. I found 3 for JKU'S ..all asking around 800 dollars. It looks like they are becoming more common.
