Alpine tweeter install question.

I posted this over in the electronics section, but thought I'd put something here too.

I just bought Alpine SPR-60C's to replace the stock dash speakers and tweeters: Alpine SPR-60C Type-R 6-3/4" component speaker system — also fits 6-1/2" openings at Crutchfield.com

Although the dash is a huge PITA to deal with, I got the speakers in just fine last night. The tweeters on the other hand, now that's a different story. They don't even come close to fitting (even though Crutchfield says this setup is compatible with the '12 Wrangler.) I've got the crossover figured out, that's no problem. The problem is that the hole in the tombstone mount is too small for the tweeter itself, and I can't figure out how to use the parts that came with it to convert the tombstone into a usable location for the tweeters. HELP!

Has anyone had any luck installing these tweeters? If not, maybe something similar? I need ideas, man!

I used Hertz tweeters, they fit perfect.. just a dab of silicone and they are held firmly in place and look good.. I would just return the Alpines and buy some that fit correctly.

Do you have to trim the hole some? I know some wont even fit the pod itself.

if CF says it fits, it may say, fits with some modification.

Just get a utility knife with a brand new blade. My housing took some trimming but now the tweeters are mounted solid.

I just trimmed the parts off so it was a smooth circle with a snug fit for my Infinity tweeters.

Can't return the Alpines, they came with the 6.5" speakers that are already in my dash, and I'm not going to rip it all apart again. I'll post a pic of the parts I'm dealing with here in a second.

Looks like the (threaded?) ring screws onto the tweeter to hold it in place. Just need to trim/cut/grind/file opening so the tweeter slides in nice and snug and tighten the ring on the back so it doesn't pop out.

The Hertz fit perfect, no trimming required....
Id use a Dremel and trim the housing, the Alpines should fit.

Yeah, that's right. The problem lies in the fact that you have to get the threaded ring inside of the tombstone. Not sure how to do that. If I cut the hole big enough to the get the threaded ring in there, I think the hole will be too big for the tweeter.

Anyone know what to do with the other circular piece with the tabs on it?

Anyone found any other tweeters that fit the space exactly? What is the size I should be looking for. I guess I could figure this out myself by taking the stock ones out and measuring, but thought someone here must know.

I like these a lot, just wondering about the tweeter fit. I thought I read somewhere that you have to trim out the opening some to make them fit. Would rather not do this if possible.

I've used some star brackets I think they were called when mounting tweeters to door panels. You don't open the hole to get the ring in. There is a bolt about 8mm between the housing and windshield. You take the housing off to install the tweeter then put it back. Ring from the opening in bottom.

The housing on 2012's is part of the dash, they no longer come out. I couldnt see a way for me to hold a ring to it, so 2012's need a real true fit tweeter.

Desperate times?

I've been looking at my tweeters all night. (That's what she said?) Well, the more I'm thinking about it, the more I'm thinking that I'm going to have to simply cut a bigger hole into the tombstone, as others have already suggested. However, I've still been stumped about how I'm going to get the threaded ring inside of it to attach the tweeter. I think the best thing to do is simply going to be to increase the size of the hole, slide the tweeter in and glue it.

Am I being too hasty?

Didn't you get them from Crutchfield or am I thinking of someone else? I'm sure it's either in install directions or you could call them. They also may have come with the clips that allow the tweeters to snap into place after trimming the hole the right size. The speaker manual should explain different mounting options also and use the best one for the scenario.

No, I didn't get them from Crutchfield, I just used that link to show what speakers I was talking about. I got them on Amazon at about 1/2 the regular price, so I'm sure not an authorized Alpine dealer.

The install instructions are pretty clear, they just don't contemplate the '12 Wrangler scenario.

I also have the same speaker setup, have not installed them yet. Hope the tweeter doesn't create any install issues. In addition to the speakers I bought the PDX 5 amp, JL Audio wrangler sub. Going to try the stock headunit and replace if needed. Plan on installing in the next week or 2, if you still have issues I'll let you know how it goes.

I got them in last night. Boy was it a PITA. I ended up taking an exacto-knife and cutting a hole just large enough to shove the tweeters into the tombstones. You won't need to use the threaded ring on the back side if you cut the holes just the right size. Besides, I don't think you could fit the ring inside the tombstones anyway.

I was surprised how easily the exacto-knife cut through the plastic. Unfortunately, I made the same mistake on both sides: I cut too much out of the lower right and left corners of the tombstones. If you stare at the tweeters, you can see a very small gap between the tweeters and mounts. I'll go take a picture and post.

I'm pretty disappointed in my carelessness. It's not terribly noticeable, and unless you're staring right at the tweeters, you'd never know it, but still, I'm bummed.

Now, all that said, the speakers sound AWESOME. And all I've done is replace the speakers in the soundbar, dash, and tweeters. Still have the stock sub and I haven't replaced the amp or the head unit. Still, doing what I've done, plus poly-fil, and it's already a huge upgrade.

Did you use the alpine crossover that came with the components or just throw it away? Ive read conflicting opinions on whether or not the stock infinity amp crosses over the high frequencies internally. Thanks

I used the crossovers and they sound great. Don't know if they'd sound better without the crossovers because I didn't even try it. Of course, I intend to upgrade my amp at some point. (Though I've got to give my wallet a rest. My wife has been patient, but I think she's losing it. )
