Just installed this kit on my new Rubicon. it is spendy, but is very well desined. It is a great option for those with small spouses. My wife loves it and now Has cleared the way for the lift kit. ?

Great company and really nice product. I used to sell accessories and sold Amp products. They were just redesigning the motors when I left the business, I hope they got them more weather resistant. Here in the salt belt, after a few years of service the motor would crap out and then you would see vehicles running around town with one board up (functioning properly) and the other side would always be down.

Just bought a 2015 JKUR about two weeks ago and had the dealer lift it and add 35" tires. I also asked for the AMP steps to be installed to head off the spousal complaints. The Jeep was ready on Friday but the step couldn't be installed until Monday. Of course I wanted the Jeep for the weekend even without the steps. Watching and helping my wife into the lifted Jeep was hysterical, let alone the running jump I needed. Needless to say after the steps were installed she was far happier.........

Very cool, but I imagine off roading could really trash those (ouch $$$$)

Side note, I actually have an old AMP Research dual suspension mountain bike frame. Was pretty sweet back in the day.

I really like them but am on the fence.
I think, they operate form the door opening?
What if you run with doors off, no step?

Here's a way of thinking about what a Jeep does when the doors are off.

Without an Amp power step, when you remove your doors you unplug the door wiring harness. By doing so the Jeep recognizes that the doors are off and it prevents the interior lights from staying on.

The power step are wired into the door wiring harness, when the door circuitry is trigger by the opening of a door it triggers the steps to open, with the door removed it retracts the step the same as the interior light going out because of door removal.

I have similar steps from Amp as OEM on my Denali. I love them in the summer time, but I pull the fuse in the winter because ice and crap freezes their operation I've found.

This is where I'm at right now; first freeze today and there was a bunch of slush and crap that caused the system to freeze/bind and not retract all the way without assistance.

I did find a troubleshooting guide on their side that had some tips I might try to prevent.

Otherwise, my wife and I love these steps. We don't do any rock crawling or "heavy" wheeling, so they work fine 99% of the time.

I've heard stories of people opening them to hop out and spot for someone in a tight spot and the step pushed off of a boulder and rolled the jeep.

I know they have a safety mechanism when they go up to stop from crashing someone's foot but does the same safety mechanism work going down if it feels something preventing it?

At nearly $1,300 for a set, does anyone know if these AMP Research PowerSteps are made in the the USA?

And why does the version for the JK cost more than the one for the JKU? It's a smaller kit with less aluminum.

Edit: I just found the answer to the first question on their website. :)

The kit includes everything needed for installation, including vehicle specific mounting hardware, detailed instructions, wiring harnesses and an electronic control unit. The AMP Research PowerStep is made in the USA, and backed by a 5-year/60,000 mile warranty.

Yeah, my wife is 5' 3" tall, so similar situation. I put a set on her F-250 as well; they're the perfect height.

I spent some time cleaning the ones on the Jeep last night and realigning...then dousing them in silicone spray. That should do the trick when I venture back out tomorrow. :)

I did have another question, I have a 75th Anniversary and it has the rubi rails on it already. Just makes it look nice and clean. Is there anyway to still keep them on and use the powerstep? If not i've see a few pictures with at least some sort of cover on it?

Thanks,
Adam

Good question; the Amp Research boards us the holes in the pinch welds, as well as bolt holes underneath. I think you could probably put the rails back on when the boards are installed, but I'd recommend contacting either ElectricStep.com or Amp Research themselves. Their customer service is awesome, and they're fast to reply to emails.
