another lift/tire thread.

OK this is my first Jeep and am obviously wanting to start the mods ASAP. A few questions. At first I was just going to go with a teraflex 2.5" lift and 33's. But I saw a jk with a 4" and 35's and that is the look I'm going for. Someone told me I could run a 4 door 3" lift on my 2 door and I would gain 4". I'm wanting to not spend a ton of money right away so what would you guys recommend? Also, I'm keeping the factory 17's for now. What size tire should I be looking for that is 35" tall? Like a 35/12.50 or a 315/75 or what? Thanks. Oh and I am off-road at least 2-3 times a month and it is my DD.

Then you don't want to go putting 4" of lift on a 2dr (or a 4dr for that matter)! And you don't want to stick with the stock 17s!

With that much lift, you are looking at the need for a very complete lift kit with adjustable trackbars, adjustable control arms, etc. Then you are going to need driveshafts because the extreme angle that the stockers would be at would cause them to fail or you would rip your boot off during articulation, which would also cause the shaft to fail.

Then if you want to stick with the stock 17s, you are looking at much more money for tires than if you were to step down to a 16" or even 15" wheel. And you would have to get spacers for the stock wheels to provide the correct backspace to clear the wider tires. Many times, new 15" wheels AND tires can be purchased for less than the price of just new tires for 17s.

Personal opinion........save up much more money and do much more homework if you truly want to go with that much lift. OR, go with a 2.5" lift (Teraflex or Rock Krawler would get my vote), some 15" wheels, and 35" tires (if you are prepared for the possible troubles and hit in performance that accompany them).

4fit's advice is gold.

Why do you feel the need to start mods ASAP? Granted, the world's gonna end on December 21st (if you believe the Mayans), but that still leaves a solid 11 months to plan and execute your build.

Instead of making another "lift/tire thread" I figure I'll just ask here

I'll be getting my taxes back soon and I'm not sure what I need to buy.
I really wanna run 33x12.5x15 Duratracs on black 15x8 MB72 alloy wheels.

I'm only 21 and I don't have a huge budget.
I wanna do it right the first time.
I went out off-roading 7 times from July - Dec in the NJ Pine Barrens
Its my daily driver.

Patience is your friend, soak in all the responses here, make your final decsion, wait a week and I bet you'll change your mind...and while there is a ton of good info here, sometimes some of that info may not be the best for you. There are consequences to many mods, make sure you are wiling to accept them and live with them....noise, ride gas mileage, handling, cost, reliability etc. Do the mods right or don't do them at all...nothing worse than half assed mods IMO. 4fit has you off to a good start!

A lot of times, those two statements don't go well together.

Depends on what your budget is. If you aren't planning on adding a lot of weight or want any serious flex, a 2.5" budget boost would work just fine. They can be had relatively cheaply. If you want to go with new coils instead of spacers, something like the Teraflex 2.5" kit can be picked up for around $750 and that includes shocks. You mentioned doing it right the first time. I can go ahead and tell you that most people would not considering a spacer kit as "doing it right". However, ya got to do what ya got to do. If you are working on a tight budget and think that a spacer kit will do jut fine for you, then go for it. But, if you know for a fact that you really want/need coils, then save up and go that route. I personally went with the Teraflex spacer leveling kit not just because it was cheap, but because it will work for the time being and because I can recoup probably 75% of the purchase price whenever I decide to move up to a coil lift.

A lift will help some with that high centering you have going on in your pic because it will raise your frame up. However, the only way to truly gain ground clearance is with larger tires because a lift does not raise your axle pumpkins, which are the lowest part on the vehicle. Looks like you have the 29" tires on stock steelies, so going with a 2.5" lift and 33s would be a good fit for you I think, depending on what kind of wheeling you do of course.

Just going by the numbers here, but a 2.5" kit is going to raise the center of your frame 2.5" (give or take a little) and then going from 29" tires to 33" tires will add 2" below your axle. So if you do decide to go with the 2.5" and 33", then you are looking at raising your pumpkins by 2 inches and raising your frame 4.5" from where they are currently. Now, this is assuming that you get exactly 2.5" of lift and your new tires are exactly 33", so these numbers aren't perfect, but should give you a good feel for the difference you could expect.

The DuraTracs and MB72's are a popular combo. Check with DTD here on the forum (or call them) and they'll hook you up with the proper backspacing on the rims.

For a lift, a 2.5" RK or TF spring lift will give you enough height, with room for 35's if you decide you want em in the future, without making your Jeep look ridiculous with the 33's.

Are you going for a "look" or actual function?
33's will get you pretty much anywhere, and are cheap to do. 35's are going to cost you a nice chunk of change to do right, and you'll probably never need them. Nothing wrong with 35s at all, just some things to consider. Decide what's most important to you first, then mod accordingly.

I'm going for the look and functionality. I do go off road quite a bit but just really like how they look with 4" under them. I've heard that you have to change a lot with going with a 3 or 4" but I talked to a guy here in town that said otherwise and I wasn't sure. He is running a 4" with 35's and said he hasn't changed anything else and hasn't had any problems. I don't know how much he is off road though.

Listen to what others have said. Go with 33"s and a 2 inch budget boost or the 2.5 inch coil lift.

I was as new as you a short month ago. After reading a lot on this forum I went with a teraflex leveling kit, old man emu shocks, and 33" duratracs and could not be happier. If you want a 4" lift, you will need new control arms, trackbars, and shocks.

You may also have to extend your brake lines, ABS lines, and get a new drive shaft. In the end it is not worth it. Stick with a 2" or under lift and 33" tires on a 16" or 15" rim

I believe you should get new shocks...I got the Old Man Emu 0-2" shocks and they are fantastic. They feel really solid and are a major upgrade to stock shocks.

I've talked to many jeepers both in my area and on the forum who want a 4" lift on 35's and are on a tight budget. IMO a quality 4" lift plus all of the goodies that are needed to go along with it are generally not in the budget range. Great advice from everyone above, go with 33's and a smaller lift (2.5 coil lift if you can afford it)

Thanks everyone. And 4fit that pic might have just sold me on the 2.5. That thing looks good. I just didn't want to buy the 2.5 and then later regret it and end up spending more than I had to. If I could get the lift and all necessary components for the 4" for under $2,000 I would prolly go that route. If not I'll go with the 2.5" teraflex. Can the 4" be done for under 2,000? (Not including tires)

4" lifts are for sissies! Go 6", and you can run 44's and get 5 mpg like this guy:

Doesn't matter what lift and tire you go with you will always wish you did more (its a sickness) I did the 4 inch with 35's and I'm already looking forward to 37's just remember it all hits your mpg
