Another windshield crack

So I've read plenty of posts regarding our upright windshields cracking easily due to rock impacts. This morning my windshield cracked without being hit with anything. It started at the bottom edge exactly in the center and started growing at about an inch per minute.

My Jeep rolled off the assembly line late November and has less than 1000 miles. I can only think this is a mfg defect. At any rate, to avoid battling with Jeep to fix it I filed a claim with insurance. Living in highly over regulated MA, state law requires insurance to replace glass free of charge.

You likely had a small chip that you couldn't see along the edge somewhere. The Wrangler doesn't include any windshield trim, so the edges of the windshield are exposed to rocks. A very small (microscopic) chip could easily serve as a stress concentration point and, combined with thermal or torsional stresses, that is where the crack would have started from.

That's what I'm guessing. The crack began just below where my windshield mount GPS sits so that area isn't getting blasted with heat. Also, The roads were covered in a solid layer of snow so I had 4x4 engaged and this stretch of road is full of potholes. Possibly the layers of glass were expanding differently and a bit of flexing due to bad roads and 4 wheel drive torquing the frame cause just enough stress?

Still the last time I'd experienced something similar happening was in an '86 Accord.

Exact same thing happened to me. I just took it back to my dealer (im at 2,000KM) and they could not find any chips so they took pictures and sent them to chrysler. They said they will replace it as a manufacturers defect for free.

Hmmm I'm going to have to have a closer look at mine. Started at one side and went right across. I didn't notice a chip at the edge.

Just got a confirmation email from my dealer today to apologize about the windshield and that Chrysler will for sure give me a new one free of charge. The service manager said he's never a stress crack in a wrangler in 25 years.

Xyz and fyg glass is cheap of your selling your ride then its fine.
As far as cracks yeah look in the black band around glass (frit band) its the enamel that protects the urethane from UV break down and gives the adhered area a cleaner look. However it is also the cause to many unseen breaks that crack....the other side of rear view mirror is another common spot not seen as drivers we don't see there...

If you look at the crack look for a small (can be real small and possibly silver/whitish) pit on the crack surface. It is in a lot of cases right next to or on top of the frit band...

Tip for all of us, if you hear a smack DO NOT discount it as no damage till you have looked around the frit band and by wipers for a chip....a lot of times my customers say they heard it looked and couldn't see damage...they forgot to look when they got home or got gas at the fruit band.....
I do a lot of long crack repairs....

3 months on my new JKUR and 3 cracks. ALL starting form the edges of the windshield. I thought mine might be missing a cap around the edge, but NO! This is stupid. Guess I am going to have to find my won solution for a cap. This is horrible!
NOt changing out the windshield until Spring though.
Think I am going to put something in with Jeep and/or one of the reporting agencies

I'm not sure what Chrysler is like in the USA but I called Chrysler Canada and bitched about my crack after a month and no visible chips and they told me dealer to replace it free. Worth a shot for sure.

If my speculation is correct, Jeep knows they have a problem and is giving no resistance to replace them without hassle. Since my 1st random crack I've no longer been keeping the defrost on full blast on cold days since I think temperature is instigating the failure.

If your not in a state that requires insurance to cover glass for no (or little) deductible on full coverage policy's you might want to add it. Its normally very cheap.

I posted this link on another related thread

I'm doing the same thing, no more defrost when I get mine replaced. It's weird that I keep reading how normal this is but the dealer was very surprised or at least they pretended to be.

I got a small chip on the way home the other night. It was barely one-eighth of an inch, if that. Luckily, my insurance covers the cost of the repairs without any deductible. The technician that did the repair this morning said he sees a lot of chips and cracks on Wranglers, I assume it is because the windshield is more or less straight up vertical making it catch every rock. He said that small chip would have spread eventually, probably with temperature swings. He said a lot of times just pulling into a heated garage will cause the crack to spread. That said, this chip was so small that I would have never noticed it had it not been fairly close to my line of sight.

Well after 1500 km, and 1 month on the road my windshield cracked on my 2013 Sahara Unlimited. It started with a tiny crack running upwards, then across and who knows where it'll go from there. It's about 1/3 off the edge of the driver's side, not far from the middle.

The defrost was on and it was cold...but..that's no my problem. I'll call the the dealer foir warranty. I do have coverage but the deductible is $300, plus I definitely want to keep it OEM with the decal of Jeep grille in middle and the little jeep climbing over rocks in passenger corner.

There's no way that a quality windshield should crack by pressure or temperature change unless they put an eggshell for a windshield in there. They are putting knew ones in because they know they put a cheap POS in there in the first place. I doubt the replacements are any good.

Did somebody mention a small chip at the base of the windshield?

A windshield should never crack unless it's been nailed by a stone or some debris. Anyone who has had this happen complain to Chrysler... maybe they'll source an aftermarket superior quality windshield and do a recall (if tons of Wrangler owners complain).

A month old 5 days ago, and now I have a nickel sized chunk missing from my windshield. A semi coming from the other direction gave her the late birthday present. Probably gonna try and regift that one!

Luckily, insurance company is going to fix it tomorrow...yay!

Have you looked at the windshield from the side? Its actually pretty wavy. Wonder if it's supposed to be like that, or is it unevenly bogged or pressed at the factory.

I watched a video, and the robot applies the sealant, and two workers install the glass.

Mine developed a crack on the right top, went down a little, over, then back up again. I was going to take it to the dealer, have them throw an eyeball on it. There was definatly no chip, but a couple days later, a rock hit it in another spot and chipped and cracked it in another spot. So getting it replaced through insurance.

I have now seen over 30 threads by different people with these stress fractures (mostly 2013s). One guy wasnt even driving. The glass cracked sitting in his driveway. It is definitely a problem and if Chrysler says "we don't know anything about it" they are full of it. Glad they are taking care of you.

I have a window repair guy that does house calls to my work parking lot. $65 per trip and ALL of them have not cracked. Beats replacing the whole window or getting a ticket. You can still kind of see the chip but it stops it from spreading.

(Knocking on wood)... One of the last things my dealer said to me was "you will break windshields!" ... Mentioned it's because of the angle the window sits at, stones, even little ones don't bounce like on a car or truck...

My windshield isn't wavy at all. The factory wipers are crap though. When my windshield does break I'll replace it with that plexi glass windshield someone was talking about on here.

2nd crack - new 2013 wrangler

Chrysler has just authorized my dealership to cover the second crack I've had in the windshield of my new jeep wrangler since I bought it in May. Now that I'm seeing that other people are having this problem, I am assuming it must be a defect with the vehicle. Both cracks in my windshield have come from the passenger side and snake right out from where the windshield meets the vehicle frame, and neither have been cause by chips or "dings" to the windshield.

I just had my windshield replaced on my 13 month old 2013; after two chip repairs and finally a chip that grew to a crack right across my vision. I had it done by a local glass joint for $154.00 (including tax)....no more MOPAR glass for me, although I do miss the appliques. At that price, I'm not complaining. It was actually cheaper than the replacement in my TJ that I had done 2 years ago, I guess because it didn't include the gasket trim.
