Antenna for JK

Hope everyone is well, so quick question-- looking for replacement antenna for factory installed. I searched from phone application but only results were new members. I could swear that someone had purchased and/or installed new shorter/black/sport antenna on one of these forums. As always thank you all for your time in advance

IDK when I put my antenna up I like it LONG. Mainly the stock antenna is cut for a length to provide good reception. It is not even optimal I don't think. Two meter wavelength is 150MHz. So 100MHz is 3Meters I'm guessing. So, 1/4 wavelength (optimal antenna length) would be about .75 meters or slightly less in atmosphere. So, come to think of it, that is about the length of the antenna. Anyway, you should be able to get the idea. When shortening the length of an antenna, it will require a matching coil in line with it to "fool" the radio that there is actually the right length antenna attached. This has to do with impedance matching and a really complicated long explanation. A quick look-up on Google showed 28.5 inches for the optimal length.

So basically short antenna (less than 1/4 wave) at 88 to 108MHz = poor reception.

You are undoubtedly right. The flip side is a long antenna mounted on the fender is not at all practical on the trails. It is too exposed and constantly take hits. I have seen many antennas lost on the trails.

I can't speak for everyone but I don't do mods for looks; I ride the trails, see what is going to break, and plan accordingly.

I would tend to agree with you about not modding for looks.

That being said, I also don't mod for the sake of modding. When a bush rips my antenna off, I'll mod it....with a spring mounted one so that it can give and not break. I doubt that will happen to the stock antenna though because it appears to me to have enough spring to it that it won't take that kind of hit. Regarding antenna length my CB antenna is a 1/4 wavelength antenna or 102 inches long. I would call that a big ass antenna. I got it for function, not looks. It is by far the best possible antenna to mount on a jeep for dependable communications over the greatest distance with a LEGAL CB radio installation. Contrary to many comments that I have had about it's length, it will most likely not break going through any type of trees/brush as it has a spring loaded base similar to a military mount. That is why the military uses this type of base; it is not a whim, it is tried and true. On the other hand those who use fire sticks may have it ripped off due to trees and brush as it is made of fiberglass which, in my opinion is not as rugged as a stainless steel whip.

As you might be able to tell, I have a passion for radio...and the credentials to back it up. I'm not a know it all, but I know a lot about it. I deal in facts not fiction as most antenna manufacturers try to sell their wares using fiction and techno speak rather than fact.....anything to get you to buy their product.

The problem with long antennas for me is that they whip around after getting dragged in a tree. The result dings up my paint and is almost dangerous to passengers when the doors are off, who must deal not only with the whipping antenna but also the branch it was caught on.

I replaced the stocker with a 14" one and it's much less of a trail distraction. That said, yes, my reception has degraded from stock levels. Everything is a compromise!

@ MTH couldn't agree more, if you are willing to put up with the compromise then, you have found your solution. My antenna, where it is mounted, doesn't ding the paint or have any chance of "whipping" the occupants with the top down. It has two mount points. With the rack on, it is on the rack and with the rack off, it is in the very rear part of the jeep, on the sheet metal just behind the rear wheel. It has performed well there.

One other thought, if you are in situations where the antenna may ding the paint, there is a lot more to worry about than the paint ding. How about all of the deep scratches all the way down the side of the jeep by the brush and trees that just had its way with whacking off your antenna. The first problem begets the other. By the time my jeeps gets dinged to the point of worrying about the antenna, it will probably have it's camouflage paint job well on its way...to keep paint on it and keep if from rusting through. At that point, who cares what the antenna does to it. Like I said when the antenna gets ripped off, THEN it is mod time for me.

Ahh, well that's a totally different set up. Wouldn't mind seeing pics of that if you've got them, just for the sake of curiosity. I just don't think the stocker is in the right spot to be as long as it is--off the rear would've been better.

And yes . . . I've got scratches in my paint.

That's my snorkel.

Back to the subject, we don't have many stations and I get both I listen to so its a compromise I can live with. I put more effort in my CB/NOA radio antenna so you can guess where my priorities are

As long as you don't mind the degradation in reception, it looks great.

Ditto for me about lose of reception. My Jeep came with that on it. If you drive in low spots it just about fades out. Gotta get rid of it but I use my iPod. No commercials nor does it have bad reception because it's wired directly into radio. Lol

jk'n. ... Thanks for the great ideas reading back through this post! I get made fun of by my other half, yes she has a Jeep too, about me worried about my paint. Do I have a problem? Should I go see a doctor? Anyway I would like to put a CB in da Jeep. But I'm clueless. Think I could find a used one with an antenna that would do the trick? With out spending a kings ransom? Thanks.

I have the sirus 430n head unit. So i'm not worried about the AM/FM stations being pulled in too much. This was a cosmetic mod for me and...... I like it.

I got a cheap Walmart CB made by Cobra for $30.00. It puts out the legal limit of power as all over-the-counter CBs do. No frills, just an AM mode CB. I got a 102" quarter wave whip with ball/spring mount. Here is a link to the thread for my install. All the pictures have been taken down, I guess they only survive for a certain period of time. I can post more if you request on the other thread. And regarding antenna, I think the wilson fiberglass antenna looks good and provides the best compromise between a 1/4 wave stainless whip and a firestick regarding how it handles signal.
