Anybody else?

2011, the first start of the day there is a grinding buzzing noise from the lower right floor board area. The starter motor is on the left area so that is not suspect. It is really loud and only happens when the jeep sits for long periods. I am not trying to diagnose the problem. I am looking to see if anybody else has had this so I can tell the service dept. what it may be when I bring it in. As you know they will keep it and try to diagnose problem. I have only heard it on the first start of the day. It is fairly loud and does not sound normal.

My Jeep doesn't do this personally, but I've worked on 2 JK's that buzzed at start-up.

The first the starter didn't engage fast. Only happened with a cold engine.

The second was the fan making noise, again only with a cold engine.

Not common at all, but it is out there

Thanks GH, The JK has all these whirring, clicking, sounds when the door is opened. When I turn the key to start it the noise is kinda like a school fire alarm. A loud buzzing, vibrating sound. Maybe it is with the starter. The noise happens at start, but only when it sits overnight.

Yeah there's all kinda of weird noises they make. If it's very cold out, like 15 or lower, when I start with a cold engine it makes this awful noise when the engine catches for maybe 1-2 seconds. That sounds like the belt though.

Only "buzz" I get comes from my transmission. For example, a shift from PARK down to DRIVE will produce a light, 1 second long buzz. I'm not positive what that is, but I see nearly 50% of all JK's do it, and a lot of TJ's too. I've also seen this in a Charger, and a couple T&C vans. Whatever that is, it's a Chrysler thing.

Haven't seen it on the JK, but my girlfriend's Cobalt buzzes every start-up. It's the power steering pump. I've replaced it twice. Must be a Chevy thing that's also something to keep in mind though.

I'm about to do all kinds of crap to my Jeep. Oil, transfer case, axles, etc. I'll get a fresh look at what's under the passenger seat/floor and what could possibly buzz in front of the passenger firewall.

The only things under the passenger side front are heat shields and exhaust pipes chucky. Under the hood nothing near there except a battery.

That being said I'd imagine it's perfectly possible to get a vibration during engagement that would move a heat shield, or exhaust pipe, causing thin metal to vibrate and create a buzz type noise. Same holds true for the battery/connectors.

I know you aren't trouble shooting the issue, but that's what I see at quick glance, and experience working on JK's and other vehicles. Personally, I'd have the dealership pay particular attention to those areas in addition to the power steering pump, starter, and fan.

By the way, just a little chassis grease got that fan quiet.

Power steering pump noise O.K.

My 2010 Jk power steering pump is noisy during cold weather warm up. The owner manual says this is normal. My 2000 S-10 did the same thing and that worked fine.
