Do they have a 3 ply sidewall ?
They're listed with the same weight as the E rated versions according to Tirerack, Designed for the 2017 Ford Raptor apparently, but i'm curious about the C rating, as i'd love more wrinkle in the rocks, and assuming they have a 3 ply sidewall, it'll be the 3rd time i'll be sporting KO2's :beerdrinking:
I never knew they made these until just after I bought the E-load. I won't be buying the same size tire just to get a C load. My E-load at 25-26 lbs ride just fine.
I run my E rated at 32-34psi, not changing them now anyways, i still have another 30k miles or so to go before i need new tires
But still wondering about their sidewalls.
I changed my first set with around 20K miles, those were 33's, and i moved them to my truck (Chevy Silverado crew cab) since they were pretty much brand new. Now those are getting close to 45k miles, and the Silverado is a much heavier vehicle, there is still a lot of meat in them to cruise for a lot more miles.
I asked my local DT dealer a couple of weeks ago. They said they were 2 ply sidewalls in load range C. I was told Ford struck up a deal with BFG to "keep costs down". I would want to contact BFG to be sure all load range C's are 2 ply sidewalls. Until then we're just guessing...
Affraid somebody was going to say they were 2 ply, damn it. i tried to contact BFG yesterday, but nobody was picking up the phone. i'll send them an email today to verify.
In the past (not sure how long ago) the Load rating was specifically tied to the number of "plys" in the sidewall , Now it's a correlated rating as to how much weight the sidewall construct will safely support ... that may (or may not) equal the # of belts.
In other words an "E" load today might have 10 ply sidewalls OR just be as strong as 10 plies.
As has been mentioned many times here on WF, a "C" load may or may not play nice on our Jeeps. Same apparently (according to comments) holds true for other loads.
As if "tires" and the selection wasn't confusing enough already. Now I get why some just drive in and say, "Put the same ones on" and call it a day.
Correct, this can be confirmed with the Dick Cepek Extreme Country tire. it is an E-Load with only a 2 ply sidewall. They specifically engineered for the load capacity with a focus on better ride quality.
So far I'm very pleased with my 315/70/17 load range C KO2. I can only speak for on-road experience for now, only had them about a week but my brother in law has them as well and has seen some decent rock terrain although I wouldn't call it extreme rock crawling.
BFG replied back to my 2nd email, so this was their answer this time
"No, the C load range tire will not have a 3 ply. It is possible that the C load range will list 2 ply or 1 ply on the sidewall.
The E and C load range tires will not share the same sidewall strength. The E load range BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO size, LT315/70R17 will have a stronger or thicker sidewall for heavy vehicles. However, both tires share Core-Gard for those unexpected road hazards"
So as we thought, the c rated one doesn't have 3 plies, but makes me wonder if this Core-gard stuff can protect the sidewall from sidewall cuts in the C rated ones, i'll see if i can dig more on the core guard stuff since i have a case open with BFG
2 plies for sure, but BFG mentioned the core-guard stuff should be plenty enough to give the protection the sidewall needs for rocks and what not. Same core-guard stuff is present in the E rates ones with the 3 plies. They said there is more to tire construction as the stuff we know as 2 or 3 plies, granted without any more details is just more marketing

Since the C load has a 2 ply sidewall, why would this tire spec @ .6 lbs more? Anyone have experience as to whether the ride is any different as the E load with 30-32 psi?
I have gone ahead and ordered the C rated BFG. My input may not be very helpful. The only experience I have to compare the ride with are the stock BFG Mud tires which were badly cupped from the prior owner (not being smart enough to rotate tires). Discount tire did match the $212 price that is being offered from Tire Rack.
Do I think the c rate if is a good choice for me i have a jk 2 door auto 2.5 lift steel front and rear bumper with tire carrier and winch also engine and trans skid and rubi rail

6 ply tread....not sidewall. Sidweall I think is 2-ply rated (a measure of thickness). I'm getting some Cs for the 4Runner tomorrow...DuraTracs are becoming too loud for me.
I finally had the new C rated 315/70/17 BFG KO2's mounted and they seem to really give me a great ride and are very quiet! Now I can enjoy driving my jeep.
