I'm going camping this weekend. Was thinking about throwing an inflatable mattress in the back and leaving the tailgate open to sleep. 1) anybody try this? 2) what size mattress fits well? 3) any ideas? Thx
I sleep in my jku, in fact doing it tomorrow night. Sleeping bag and individual camp pad like you would in a tent for me, I keep the doors closed mosquitoes, rain, wind etc suck in the middle of the night.
I do it regularly on wheeling weekends. Rear seats folded down, 4" foam mattress with bedding. Move the front seats all the way forward at bedtime, lay down and call it a night. Gets too hot, idle the Jeep with the AC on for about 10 min.
I just climbed in the back of mine to checkout the accommodations for the first time today.
Not to shabby with the front seats pushed forward.
I think gap fillers are the most important addition, I picked some up awhile back from muddy dog or something like that.
I haven't done it yet but I did climb back there. I'm 6'1"+ and with the seats all the way forward and laying diagonal, I have plenty of room. Plan on doing it for real this fall.
I've slept in mine numerous times. Usually on the side of the road when I travel. It's friggin uncomfortable. Front seats don't recline enough. Back seat is too small to stretch out. And my cargo area is always full.
Not yet. I haven't pissed my wife off since I purchased mine.
I'll probably sleep in it when it comes time to buy wheel/tire upgrade. I got about 35000 miles to go.
My boyfriend and I both sleep in the back with the gate closed.
He's 6'2".
Push the front seats all the way forward and tilt towards the front an voila.
We sleep on camping air mattresses, the skinny inflatable ones. Honestly I could do without an air mattress at all and just have a big blanket!
Been camping and once forgot the tent, and the other time it easy pouring rain and windy.
I'm 5-10 and with the front seats pushed up, I had enough room, even with two 50 lb dogs.
I stuffed the middle with towels.
I usually only do winter camping so leaving the tail open wasn't an option.
In a JKU? I sleep in my 2 door JK in winter at -15C. I am 6 feet tall. Yes, you need to have the tailgate open so from shins and down you could fit. Pretty comfy sleep as long as your mattress is right and you have a quality sleeping bag.
I am 6'2" and just fit with a twin air mattress. I sleep at a little angle. I actually quite enjoyed it. I made bug nets to go over the windows and have rain guards so that I can leave the windows cracked w/o letting rain in. My air mattress went flat on the last night so I a plan to get a memory foam mattress topper to cut to size. The advantage will be that I can easily roll it up out of the way vs. inflating and deflating an air mattress.
At 6 ft, It would be tight, most often I just put up a small tent or put a sleeping bag on the ground and enjoy the stars. I once slept under my CJ5 due to a heavy rain.
On many wildland deployments I do sleep in the back of SUV's with a blow up pad and a pillow.
I've done it a few times so I could shoot the northern lights with a "friend". I use a self-inflating sleeping pad along with a -30 sleeping bag and a few blankets. It's actually really fun! The top of the soundbar makes a great place to store your phone. Only thing I'd recommend is some Anti-Fog on the windows. When you wake up in the cold, all the windows will be foggy. Also, Make sure to keep the driver's seat and pedal area clear in case you need to get the F out of dodge!
Last time I was out I had some kind of animal shake the Jeep. that was sketchy!:rip:
I also use the Coleman SUV mattress (although I don't think it's available anymore) but at 5'11" and sleeping on a slight angle, it works out well for me (as others have pointed out, move the front seats all the way forward). It's warmer and quieter than a tent.
I have slept in my 2 door with rear seat removed, front passenger fully forward. With double futon and my 80lb+ dog many, many times. There is more then enough room for my 5 11" self so I would imagine a 4 door would have plenty of room.
