Anyone Hood Flew Off?

Just drove into a string cross wind and experienced some serious hood flapping. Now I know what people are talking about.

"Has anyone experienced a total hood failure as in totally pop the top?"

I would suspect not otherwise it would be all over the news. But I would think that Jeep design team would know better.

Never heard of a complete hood failure, but yeah those oem rubber/plastic hood latches are not the sturdiest.

I installed Rugged Ridge aluminum hood latches a while back and hood flutter is a thing of the past regardless of wind speed.

It would also have to break the metal hook that you reach under and move with your finger to open the hood all the way. Still, replacement latches are on my list to do at some point as well.

My hood flaps like mad at 80 mph if there is any wind. I have watched it with concern a few times.

Thanks all for the comments. Yeah, this was the craziest that I have ever seen. I literally slowed down because I was tripping...

Rugged Ridge looks like right mod.

Those Rugged Ridge latches look nice. I ran Daystar hood wranglers on my last 2 Jeeps, not sure what I'm going to do on the new one yet. But the stockers are going for sure.

X2 removed spring and hood flutter is 75% gone, the only downside is when you release the straps it doesn't "pop" up to assist it releasing the secondary release in the middle, you kind of pull it up... Only time hood flutters is when passing an oncoming semi at highway speed on a 2 lane hwy, still doesn't lift as bad as with the spring.... And it's free compared to new latches

I bought the Tuffy Security Hood Lock, when it's locked the hood doesn't flutter at all.

First time I've heard of the hood spring trick and would have tried it but I did go for the Rugged Ridge latches and they work great.

I drove for over two years with no noticeable problems but I did a long stretch on two lane highway with trucks flying past me and I freaked out thinking the hood was going to fly off and smash my windshield. I installed the RR's the next week and no problems. And it doesn't hurt that they look good too.

Daystar, for around $25, are made of tougher polyurethane not rubber. Problem solved.

Mine has never fluttered. Though, I have since added the Mopar hood lock (uses ign key), but for its security.

Removing the spring did nothing for me. It's a hit-or-miss mod.

+1 on hood wranglers, easy install (just don't follow the instructions, no reason to remove the mounting 'hinge' thingy at all).. My hood has stayed rock solid since then... didn't remove the spring.

I wonder if it is a luck-of-the-draw thing for hood latches?

My neighbor had to put new ones on due to a LOT of hood flutter. And I have read a few stories on here about it.

My 2014 hood is solid. Last weekend I passed between 2 semis on 65 north heading into Nashville. I was doing 77ish and they were doing about 70. Wind was buffeting around like crazy between them, but the hood was solid as a rock. It was a pucker moment going between them though.

+1 on the security latch thing. Please reverence the theft thread for additional bonus.

Duct tape Scarlet? So trashy... All the cool kids are using barbed wire.

What is the spring thing? Is there a thread on here about it?

2012 JKU, mine is tight, never saw the problem, not like some of the old Wranglers or Land Crusiers.... Walt, who put the hood lock on for you? After you bought it?

I literally lol'ed at the thread title. It would take a tremendous wind for that to even be possible. Do you really think Chrysler would release a vehicle if the hood could fly off? C'mon man!! lolol!!! Sure I've seen the hood flutter. But it is nothing like people make it out to be.

. Unscrew and remove the spring that's attached to the underside of the hood at the latch in front. When wind gets under the hood, the spring causes the hood to flutter. Aftermarket latches as stated above remove the flutter altogether

This special effect requires speed greater than 55 mph. So, step on the gas pedal to feel the experience...

I put it in. It was incredibly easy. Taking my time, I don't think it took more than 20 minutes. I have the 1/4" rivet gun, if you want to stop by.
