Anyone Know if this is street legal (PA)?

I just added an or fab tire carrier (thrilled with it) but needed to come up with a 3rd brake light solution. I modified the old one and mounted it to the carrier, inside the spare tire. I was trying to keep it below the tire line so I could keep what little visibility is left out the rear window. Anyone know if this is up to snuff? My only concern would be that because it is recessed inside the tire, the spare obstructs it a little from some angles.

it's a third brake light... IMHO you'll be fine. no police officer is going to nit pick that.

I did the same thing to mine I live in Michigan but have drove in Arizona, Utah, Nevada, California, Idaho, Alabama, Kentucky, Tennessee and Indiana and have had no problem. I towed the JK behind our Motor Home through several more states.

3rd brake light is federal law, just needs to be above the side tail lights.

In Mississippi all you are required to have is one brake light.

I have removed mine. I had it behind the spare until I installed my or fab carrier. I just never put it back on. I went all over the country this last summer and nevrr got pulled over for it.

yeah Florida is two... the third brake light might be federal but states have their own versions of the law they enforce.

Whoa. That is crazy, I have heard of people going to jail (other crimes of course) for getting pulled over for having the 3rd out. Really though, I think it is only one of those laws that is enforced if you are being targeted already. In regards to the location, I think it needs to form a triangle above the headlights, which it looks like it does. Anyway, plenty of people seem to run that without an issue. I plan on putting mine there and have only been running the two and have had no problem.

Just because you haven't been caught yet, doesn't make it legal. From what I get, here in PA its around a $120 fine if a police officer wanted to make his end-of-month quota.

To the OP, this is the only part of the federal law (FMVSS108) that you have to make sure you meet, if you relocate the light:

(c) A high mounted stop lamp must
have a signal visible to the rear
through a horizontal angle from 45 degrees
to the left to 45 degrees to the
right of the longitudinal axis of the vehicle.

Probably depends on what mood the officer is in that day...

High mounted means visable. My trailer brake lights are 24 inches.
