Anyone Tried This Under Seat Storage Box?

I'm thinking about getting this unit so I can legally (in Calif.) and securely transport handguns in Jeep.

Bestop 42640-01 - Bestop® Locking Under Seat Storage Box in Textured Black for 07-11 Jeep® Wrangler & Wrangler Unlimited JK - Quadratec

Anybody know about it or a better alternative?

I just store stuff in mine. The size of your gun could be an issue. There is another alternative that is about twice the price and a little larger made by Tuffy.

Don't question an ex-military guy about the size of his "gun"....

Seriously, I respect and appreciate your opinion... and I ain't going to get in a verbal ball busting contest with a guy from 'Jersey!

I was looking at one of these too......then I looked under the seat and there seems to be a wiring harness and metal plate. Has anyone been able to shove one under the seat of an '11jk??

I bought the Bestop underseat box because I am topless most of the summer. When I go to the gym or someplace and want to leave my wallet and junk I just lock it in the box. I leave my console and glove box unlocked and don't keep anything of value in them. The Bestop box not only locks securely, but is pretty much hidden from sight even with the doors off.

How was that for a review Geoff? <cough>swag<cough>

It can fit. I believe you have to remove the metal plate.

I first bought the Bestop one mentioned. It annoyingly rattled off road. I stuck it in my son's JK and bought the Tuffy one as a replacement in my rig. The Tuffy doesn't rattle at all. It seems to have a slightly different interior space, but still fits my S&W 686 Plus.

was the bestop one large enough inside to put a normal service sized weapon? like a GLOCK 22 or Springfield XD 40.. those are what i usually carry on the hip but i have smaller for concealed.. what would you say fits good in either the tuffy or bestop? since you have experience with both

I have the Bestop underseat lockbox in my 2008. Works great, no rattles at all. My Kahr PM9 and my Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm fit fine in it.

No, because of the slide and tilt entry.

Don't think so. Mounting brackets would be in wrong place. You'd need a mirror image of the drivers side unit.

Bestop is the best! No rattles, secure, easy install, well made, and perfect for those important items mentioned earlier in thread. Even the mechanics at my local dealership thought it was spot on.

I've had one for a while now. It doesn't rattle. I can get two 1911s in it easily or one 1911 and a 24/7 long slide with a little wiggiling and still have room for a couple of mags. There is plenty of room for a Super Blackhawk also. I like the way the key doubles as a handle to pull the drawer out.

Mine only rattled off road. I guess it depends on your suspension as it doesn't rattle in my sons jeep...he does not have a lift. The other problem I had with the Bestop was keeping it closed when unlocked. No problem with the Tuffy. I have no horse in this race, I'm just telling you my experience.

Rich..Yes, a XD40will fit. My .357 revolver is large with a 6" barrel and fits both brand boxes. I noticed that the foam insert I cut for the Bestop had to be recut for the Tuffy so the insides are not identical.

I just bought one and put in my 2011 sahara with the heated seats. Just have to remove the wiring harness plate and place the wires to the side of the box. Works awesome and fits various guns, wallet etc. I love it!

Thanks for all the informative responses! I'm going to go with the Bestop and I can be confident it will work for me thanks to you guys!

Fits two 1911's with extra mags... or a S&W 686... Perfect!

Anybody know about it or a better alternative?
You don't need anything like that in order to be legal. The law says that when you are transporting a handgun in a motor vehicle the handgun has to be in a locked container other than the glove box. Lock it in a soft sided bag, a backpack, a locking Rubbermaid container and put that locked container anywhere you like, including inside your glove box. Of course on your jeep you can lock it in your center console.

When I go to the range I carry a few handguns and they are all in their own locking zippered bag using the little TSA locks.

Been wanting one of these - so thanks for the catalyst of this posting. We and looked at link and then installation guide.

Guide clearly showed mount atop front sit front feet support. Which is better mount other than under definitely looks cleaner. Took just a glance at pictos versus reading.

Thanks

Yea, I've been using soft-sided handgun cases with the zipper tab through the loop and paddocked for years. It's OK, but I'm thinking the under-seat lock box will be handier and more certainly legal, and secure. Of course, in Calif. you have to be on your way to or from the range, gun shop, hunting, fishing, or other legit reason to transport. I'm thinking these boxes are more discreet, less obviously containing a firearm.
