ARB Diff cover

My rear diff pealed back on a rock I hit last trip out and has been dripping. Tomorrow I'm replacing with an ARB cover. I noticed the dipstick is black and not silver like in the instructions. Is it plastic? I assume that needs to be removed?

Any other advice?

Thanks

Actually, if memory serves, it is a kind of rubber or plastic coating on a metal piece.
I took a small thin file and made an indicator groove right into the dipstick, so I can tell at a glance if my fluid level is low.
It may even be magnetized if I remember correctly, but the black coating is permanent. Or at least I left mine on after notching it with the file!
