Are Jeeps reliable??

Always wanted one but never could convince the wife why we needed one. Well I'm now divorced and that's not an issue anymore. I do worry about buying a Chrysler product. Is it a dependable motor and and 6 speed tranny?
Leaning toward The Sahara. Thanks and nice to be here.

i had a 1996 grand cherokee w/ 209K on the clock, hubby's 1990 yj has 120K, my 1983 cj7 has 170K, my 2005 tj has 68K, and the hubby's old 2000 tj had 120K before he traded it in on the XK. the new jk's have the minivan v6, which has been around for quite a while and has proven its durability and longevity.

Like anything how you take care of it plays a big part. Engine and tranny are usually none issues, the other stuff can be. electronics hvac. etc..Kinda the same stuff as you will find with any vehicle. I have owned a few different models.. some never had an issue, others I had issues.

I take care of all my vehicles so that won't be an issue.

Welcome to the Forum Harrington. Let's put it this way, Jeeps are as reliable as anything out there and more reliable then most.

I have wanted one since I was 18. I'm 48 now and it is time. My girlfriend drives a 2004 Wrangler and loves it. And from what I hear the new model that came out in 2007 is even better.

Jeep has been around since 1940, so I'd say it was pretty dependable. I sure hope so, as I just bought my first one a couple of months ago! I wouldn't worry about the Chrysler Product thing. Jeep has gone through many, many hands over the years (Bantam, Ford, Willy's-Overland, Kaiser, AMC, and Chrysler...), and they're still here, and still rolling them off of the assembly line.

I have faith in the JEEP name, and there are an enourmous amount of aftermarket products for Jeeps, so I'm feeling quite good about my purchase. I'd say... GO FOR IT!!!

Curious, but "WHY" the Sahara in particular? Not knocking the "X" or Rubicon, just curious what drew you to the Sahara. It is a "COOL" name, isn't it?

Best of Luck!

Cheers!

Had a '95 Grand Cherokee. Purchased it with 20,000 miles and drove the heck out of it all over the east coast. When I sold it it had 225,000 miles on it. Changed the oil regularly. The only thing mechanical that failed was the water pump. Would still have it but the tranny started to slip and didn't want to put any $$ in it.

My first Jeep, was a Comanchee P/U. It also had the 4.0 and it said Chrysler on the valve cover, I had zero problems with it in the 3 years I owned it. When I sold it, it had 130k on the motor and all it needed was a clutch but it was still running strong.
