Are there any 2012 visual differences?

Hi folks,

As I drive around, I see JKs and I often wonder if any of the ones I am seeing are 2012s. I know there were no major exterior changes, but are there any minor things that changed just a tiny bit that I could use to ID a 2012 if I see one? Thanks!

I believe the muffler and exhaust tip may look a little different. Everything else looks the same.

If it went by so fast that you couldn't see it, then it was a 12.

Anyone got pics of those differing exhaust tips? So far, that is the only difference mentioned. I guess 2012-specific paint colors would be another.

Can't say I ever stayed behind one of those old 3.8L JKs long enough to get a look at the exhaust. Those with the archaic 3.8 who got passed and didn't have time for a glance, here's a pic.

If you see a rubi with painted fenders and top it's probably a 2012.

I think if you see those lines coming off of it like a speed racer cartoon it must be a 2012.

I look at it this way- I bought my 07 used and can't count how many people have asked "is it new" nope- just some snippy rich woman that had to buy a RUBICON for status. I don't think the doors or top were ever taking off. never takin off road.
I paid a good amount less for a used rubi like new and won't have to worry about scratching it so much.
Pretty sure if painted top and flared were available, mine would have them too

Actually, the non paint matched fenders and top may have been an added cost option to make it look more off road capable. All the posts say the unpainted fenders and top subtract from it's off road ability.

There is nothing wrong with painted fenders and roof. I actually think they look great on some colors. I just don't think they were an option on the rubicon before 2012.

Rear bumper looks different to me? Or maybe the export ones get a different rear bumper like the front ones.

All the pre 2011 JK/JKU had unpainted black plastic fenders and hard top. For 2011 Jeep offered a paint to match option for the Sahara trim. In 2012 it became an option to get paint matched top and fenders on the Rubicon as well as the Sahara.

FTR, my black 2012 Rubi on order has the standard "unpainted" fenders and hard top in the dual top option.

I understand that. But you said non painted "matching" In which would only pertain to a black wrangler.
But ya, 2011 i believe is the first year allowing body color flares for all the wrangler trims.
IMO is just wrong, you do any offroading you will regret your decision
My top is stored under a tarp for most of the year so it does not make any sense to have it look pretty.

Not quite right. All JK Saharas and many, if not all TJ Saharas, have paint matched fenders.

Yep, I even had a new Sahara YJ soft top with painted flares, half doors, and the green interior. The flares were body colored on the '11 Sahara and you only had to pay more for the body colored hard top. I should have caught that.

My hard top will be on from late Oct to April only and besides, the stock black fenders/top sort of matches the black Rubi. The north east loves to stick out branches and scratch things, which is no big deal if you only ride on the paved roads, I guess.

The flame red and detonator yellow colors look great with the black contrast to me too for some reason.
