Asking price on a Wrangler Unlimited Sport

Don't want to jinx myself because it's been a chore trying to find this Wrangler. I would like to trade in 2-door Rubicon for a 4-door Sport with half doors. Once I have the funds, I'll buy ProRock 44 axles with Detroit Truetrac LSDs on the front and rear and 5.13 gears. Anyway, the Sport I am looking at is basically naked.

All I wanted was:
  • Sport package 24C
  • Connectivity Group ($570)
  • 5-speed Automatic Transmission ($1295)
  • SiriusXM Satellite Radio ($195) (I didn't want this, but had to have it with Connectivity Group)
However, this Jeep also has Trac-Lok LSD ($295) and half doors. Altogether, MSRP is $29,545.

I do have a trade in, but I would like to know how low should I negotiate for on the Sport before even letting them know I have the trade. Is $27,000 even too low? Will all dealers tell you the invoice price if asked?

If you want the best deal for your wallet break the deal into separate transactions. Sell your current deal on your own. If you trade it in, the dealer will find a way to make you think you are getting a deal on both but in reality the dealer will be the one winning. They are in business to make money and they will make money on both ends of the deal.

Your leverage is minimal because you buying a low end Jeep. Much of the margin on their end comes from the packages and options on the vehicle.

I see. I'm trying to sell mine on Craiglist at the moment. No bites lately though. Might have to lower the price a little. Anyway, any idea the lowest I can go with that configuration (based on that MSRP)?

If you ask them to, that dealer should be willing to send you the build sheet which shows invoice price. You're in Houston. You can buy a jeep there every day for 5% below invoice (in general, I know that particular dealer may not), so tell them you've gotten an offer for 5% under on a brand new custom ordered 2015 that you'll buy if they don't want to play ball. See what happens. Can't hurt!

Here is an example of what they should send to you:

HB is the dealer hold back. You know what that is, right?

FFP is the Friends and Family Price, which is 2% below invoice.

EP is Employee Price, which is 5% below invoice.

Now you don't even have to do the math to see what kind of deal they are giving you.

I have to travel north again to get this Jeep. We had to go to Dallas for this Rubicon. Hey, I can't see your pic at work, so I'm going to check when I get home, but is that "build sheet" the same you can get through Jeep's website under "Equipment Listing"?

Mine shows all the prices.

If you PM me your email, I can send that way, if that is easier.

Some have reported as much as 15% below MSRP. I managed to get 11.3% with zero negotiation through TrueCar. It seems that even on a low end 2014 Jeep you should be able to get close to 10% with some persistence as long as you are taking one off the lot.

14.6% below MSRP this spring for me, and that's on a cheaper MSRP than the one in question. Required that I finance with them, but no problem with me paying it off immediately.

I bought a similar package for my JKU 2013 that had 11 miles on it.

24C
auto
connectivity group
premium stereo
hard top
3.73 max tow
LSD

window was 30500
- 3000 discount

27,000

So in my case, yes, that sounds entirely doable. Good luck.

I'm working with local dealer to figure out best price on this wrangler:

http://www.chrysler.com/hostd/window...BJWDG9EL226091

I doubt I'll give up on ordering a '15 willys, unless they offer a killer deal on this one above...

Have you tried TrueCar? It worked great for me. Got my Sahara for like $3-4k under MSRP.

Good deal. Definitely should be able to get out the door at no more than $30,000 even. Let us know the outcome.

Actually, out the door is already under $28,500 (6% tax in michigan).
Trying to get it for around $26k otd, but honestly no sure if I'll be able to negotiate that.
In case I don't buy, Maybe you want to come to Michigan for that wrangler?

lol, tempting, but we have 8.25% sales tax (which I would still need to pay to get my license plates and registration in Texas), and the gas cost to drive it back would be crazy. Enjoy your half doors and post pics of her when you get her! *crosses fingers*

If I had to do this all over again, I would have looked for an Unlimited Sport with half doors from the get go. But, we live and learn!

Thanks!
Yeah, weird, I've been somewhat against half doors due to Michigan winter, but lately, I'm really digging them, especially after seeing so many great examples here. Definitely not choice for most buyers: plastic windows manual everything, which can help for negotiating power for jeeps on the lot.

Oh boy, there best offer is $3,319 below mrsp and they include at no extra charge upgraded Sahara 18" wheels/rims. Although I would prefer Rubicon wheels/tires.
That's cdi pricing which is employee pricing plus $200 fee.
I going to have to sleep this one over.

Damn. I shot myself in the foot 'cause I said I'll take $30k OTD with mine. I didn't even bother negotiating. Ugh.

You mean $30k on the jku? But you haven't pulled the trigger yet, right?
Or was that $30k for your current 2dr Rubicon?

They wanted 35 for a JKU WW that MSRPs around 34,500. We wanted the hard top as well which they tried to sell us for 3k, making it 37,500. They agreed to get the hard top and install all wiring, etc for the USAA price of the dual top model for 33,730, after recent grad and mil it came to 32,730 for a dual top WW JKU with auto trans.

I told the dealer I would buy the JKU for $30k OTD. Should have negotiated lower, huh? No, have not pulled trigger. In fact, I don't even see it happening.

I'm this close to saying f*** it and just getting half doors for my 2-door, selling the hardtop, and then buying factory softtop.

is there tax cred in your state? i traded a 20 month old 2012 jk 23s soft top with about 4k miles for a 2014 jku 23s. I purchased the jk for 28500 (had 33s, side rails, and mopar lights). I took a trade of 24500, but i got tax credit, which equated to about 27xxx in my state. Think about that before selling private party. I paid tax on the difference. I negotiated my JKU sport s to about 3% under invoice.

Hmm, yes, I just read up and Texas does. Edit: Actually I think it is 6.25%.

Can you explain how this works?

Jeep I was looking at is about $27,500 before TT&L (without further negotiating a price reduction). I'm not exactly sure how much my Rubicon is worth. Private party...probably $33,000. It's a '14 2-door Rubicon with 1,000 miles on it.

So, let me get this straight. My used Rubicon is worth more than the new Sport I'm looking at. So, that means I will not have to pay any sales tax on the new Sport?

Correct, you only pay tax on trade difference. If your trade is worth a 1000 less than what you are buying, you only pay tax on a 1000. Btw, actual sales tax on a vehicle in Texas is 6.25%.
To answer your question if your trade is worth more than what you are buying, regardless of payoff, no sales tax. But you will still have other taxes and fees for a true otd price. Probably around 300-350.

Texas vehicle sales tax is 6.25% of sales price, minus any trade in allowance

heck, you may even get $ back.

edit:
btw let me clarify my above post.

i meant 24500 on my trade to the dealer was about 27xxx private sale.

i paid tax on 3xxxx (I dont have the exact number, but it was about 3% less invoice) - 24500.
