Atlanta Snow storm 2014

Well I shot some video of the ice adventure in the Jeep. It did way better than I thought it would on some steep hills.

This is part 2 which has the morning after with all the frozen ice on the road. Part 1 is the day it was actually snowing.

Enjoy!

I can't view the video right now. I drove through ATL yesterday and some side roads were still icy. The jeep held its own while I saw a civic, that was driving too fast for the conditions, slam into another car... Also saw a UPS truck slide backwards and sideways as it was trying to accelerate.

You guys had it bad...

Yea I have lived here all my life and we usually get ice or sleet and very little snow. I was surprised that I could actually crawl up a steel ice hill on the video. Chains would have been perfect but I dont have any. I would like to get 8 plus inches and see what kind of fun I could have with that.

Some snow booger shots & the hill in my neighborhood that required lockers on the icy second day. Picked up lots of folks & made two hospital runs. Awesome capability!

This past week was a recipe for disaster with the sheets of ice that quickly formed on the roads and 8 million people getting out of work (with rear wheel drive vehicles) all at the same time.

We haven't had snow in several years so...

How many southern cities do you know that are well prepared for extreme icy/snowy weather? What paralyzed the city was tons of ice on untreated streets. The snow wasn't the problem.

It really was! The interstates turned to ice and dozens of Big Rigs jackknifed because we don't have the equip to salt the roads properly. Nor did the city have a plan. People were stuck in their vehicles for 20+ hours. Many of them, not because their vehicle couldn't move, but because there was nowhere to go. 8 million people on ice at the same time. It can already take several hours to commute in ATL but add ice and Wrecks galore...recipe for disaster. It's not the amount of snow, its the amount of ice we got and a city that didn't prepare or have a plan in case it happened.

On another note, the Jeep community really came through and put together emergency response teams. Jeepers winched folks out of ditches and took food and water to people that were stranded in their Jeeps. On one of the news stations this morning they were calling the Jeep community heroes of the storm because they really helped save lives.

The bigger problem is people being unprepared and not used to the conditions... In Alberta they'll go days with the roads being near sheer ice, life goes on... We slow down use our heads and use tire chains on the big rigs, but that's common place for 4 months every year...

I'd say this would paralyze most all places. That's pleasant hill. All ice on Wednesday. We almost got hit sitting at a red light by two sliding cars.

I 100% agree. 99% of people down here don't even own chains for their tires. We NEVER have to drive in these conditions so none knows how to do it properly. However, the city news to have a plan for these type of situations. We knew it was coming several days in advance. Kids had to sleep in schools because the busses couldn't get them home and their parents couldn't get to them. Some kids even had to spend the night on the school bus. Many of our school busses here in the south don't even have heat.

Now that is sad... And terribly unacceptable, the schoolboards need to STEP UP!!! Hopefully this was their wake up call

Lol this is hilarious. I wake up to that a few times a week in buffalo. See cars in ditches and accidents weekly because of snow and ice. That much snow is just honestly pathetic to shut down a city, and it's the cities fault for not being properly prepared when it's obvious these conditions are possible. But let's be honest, people are idiots and cannot drive as well... Lol

Happened here in North Texas in December. Same issues. Nobody had a clue how to handle it and it was ugly as hell. I took the day off from work and spent the day driving around helping who I could, handing out water etc.

The airport was well prepared. We kept all of our runways open that were needed for the demand. Spent 2 nights on my Katrina Kot in my office. I thought it wasn't going to be bad so I wasn't prepared. Luckily my wife got out of the city and made the 30 mile commute home in 4 hrs. The Jeep did great! One of my guys spent 19hrs on 285.

Crazy week!

There really isn't much hilarious about it but you nailed it...The city wasn't prepared. It took a friend of mine 26 hours to make a 8 mile commute. Not because he couldn't move forward, but because there wasn't anywhere for him to go. Because of all the wrecks and the lack of Emergency response vehicles that could do anything about the situation, every lane on the interstates were completely shut down. 8 million people got off work at the same time the roads froze over and it was just a recipe for disaster.

If you had of been in ATL (on I285 or another interstate) you would have been stuck too. There wouldn't have been anywhere for you to go. It has nothing to do with capability of vehicle or driver capability. I85, I285, and I75 are exit routes for the city. When the lanes shut down you can't crawl over the 8 foot concrete wall in the middle and go the other way. Traffic already takes 2-3 hours to pass through on a normal day sometimes.

i wouldn't mind the snow so much if it wasn't the sub zero temps, 60 mile an hour winds, 2 foot drifts infront of my car door, scraping windows...

and all the idiot drivers that think 4x4 means i can haul ass at an unstoppable pace.

I'm right there with you...

There are plenty of days where the streets here in Colorado arent plowed for a couple days. I moved here from Iowa and the winters here are mild compared to what Iowa goes through.

Simply driving slow and taking more time to get where you're going is all you need...if you dont need to drive, dont. simple.

no, we get it bad but not as bad as other places do. our winters HAVE been pretty mild for quite a few years now and even at our peak of blizzards and 6 foot deep snow in the city we still haven't been as bad as some places.
