Attn: 2013 JK Owners w/ Remote Start & Auto Temp

OK, I put up a post last night about my A/C not shutting off. I discovered I was able to replicate this problem over and over. I took it to my Jeep dealer today, and after initially calling me 6 hours later to tell me they could not replicate the problem, I swiftly arrived at the dealer and SHOWED them the problem. Since the issue seems more like a programming glitch, we tried it on another 2013 with similar options, and low and behold....SAME PROBLEM.

So, here is how to induce the problem in your 2013 (have not verified it on a 2012)

1. First, ensure you vehicle is NOT set to auto fan or auto vent. (it may not matter if thee are on, I haven't tried it, but I KNOW it works with them off)

2. With your vehicle in a safe place to do so, and only where legal, use your remote to start your vehicle. It does not matter what temp you have it set at, your A/C will automatically come on. To me this is also an issue (what if you just want heater), but this is not the real problem.

3. Unlock your vehicle via remote....shortly after opening your door, you will see your orange A/C light turn on. Your A/C was already on, but since you just opened the door, the vehicle is now letting you know it is on.

4. Put ignition in vehicle and turn on like you are going to drive away.

5. Decide that you no longer want the A/C on and press the button to turn it off.

6. Orange light extinguishes and A/C is off right? WRONG!! Your light is out, however your compressor is still running and if the temp is set to cool, it will be ICE cold.

7. If curiosity strikes you, try turning if on/off a few times....the A/C system will remain on.

8. Even turning your jeep off and right back on again will NOT reset this problem.

9. The only way to "reset" this problem and make your A/C actually respond to your on/off button is to turn your jeep OFF and leave it off for at least 10 minutes. The next time you start your jeep with the KEY, the switch should respond as it should.

10. Only way to avoid this issue.....DO NOT USE REMOTE START.

11. My dealer said there were no alerts on this yet on their mechanic star website. There currently is no fix and it will require a re-flash to fix.

For the nay sayers, the AUTO TEMP is NOT on. Try it for yourself. We tried three at the dealership....they all did it.

Chad

Thanks for running this down...I was trying to figure why the A/C kept running the other day even though it wasn't needed based on temp or mode selection. But...I had remote started it before leaving work.

This issue has been around for a LONG time. At least a year now because people with '12 were complaining about it when they first came out. I know I get hot air out of mine in the winter when I use the remote start and cool air in the summer. I always assumed it was programming in the ECU to determine when to use AC or heat when the remote start is used. I don't use mine often anyway.

I thought the AC Compressor ran all the time to keep the humidity (foggy windows) down with heat.

I have had my 12 JKUR since last Thanksgiving. Have brought it to three dealerships with same issue. All said a/c working fine....its just how the system works. REALLY, so basically pushing the center control knob to turn off/on the a/c with the light being on or off is all for finger exercise with no actual result???? Origional poster FINALLY figured it out. Bottom line.....if you use the remote start your a/c is "ON". The compressor WILL cycle over and over no matter what temp you set or whether you use the a/c on/off knob. If you don't have remote start you CANNOT duplicate this.

I also took mine to dealership today, had the service manager sit in the car with me and duplicated the issue twice. It took almost 30 minutes since as the orig poster noted...once you use remote start you have to turn off the jeep and wait at least 10 to 15 minutes before MANUALLY starting the car and all will work fine.

More bad news, for me anyway, as manager says they cannot simply call Chrysler about the issue. I have to turn in the vehicle for a tech to run all of the protocol testing and communications online with Chrysler ( I took that to mean a thousand or so emails) for a few days for them to get an answer. Anybody got connections ??????

I just called Chrysler (800) 992-1997. They were glad to make a report. Sounded like the more folks call to report the problem the faster it could be resolved. If you have remote start and auto a/c please call Chrysler and report the problem. Come on folks.....winter is close and we want to remote start these vehicles with the heat on so we can get into a warm Jeep WITHOUT the compressor running.

Yeah, this came up last year. I always wondered what ever happened to that issue.

Looks at sig. Sees Remote Start. Sighs....

Previous threads died since there was no cause/effect. Finally SinCityJets (OP) figured out the cause. Think of the increase in gas mileage the remote starters will get when this issue is resolved. Just thinking back on last winter and all the miles I drove with an a/c compressor cycling for no reason kind of pisses me off. Thanks again SinCityJets. CALL CHRYSLER

^ +1 and thanks SinCityJets for bringing this information up and sharing . I was remote starting just to let the engine warm up to operating temp. before getting out on the road, being an aluminum block and all .

You're welcome guys. Just a small payback for all the great knowledge I have learned on this forum. Hopefully we can get a resolution. I know no one wants to drive around in the winter with their A/C on (unless they need it to de-fog!)

On a separate note, to those with 12+ jeeps trying to solve the LED dome light issue, check that thread....I have found a solution. Maybe not a good one, but a solution none the less. I'll post the details after I get back for T or T'ing

I have been frustrated with that light coming on the few times I auto started (pretty much just to make sure it worked before winter arrives). Never even thought that turning the light off wouldn't turn the a/c off! I will duplicate and call!

I'll be honest, I don't care if the A/C initially comes on with the Autostart, I just want to be able to turn it on and off when I want to. Not be stuck with it on because I decided to use the autostart.

Another PITA thing is IF you have the system vents set to AUTO, guess what.....that's right, the A/C turns on....even if you have it set to high heat (and I am not talking about defrost, I am talking about ANY vent setting).

So, to be sure your A/C is not on, do not autostart and do not use auto vents. Auto fan control does not turn on your A/C.

This sucks.

There may be a logical reason for this, just like when the blower stops working for a short time and restarts (another AC issue thread) but since there is no description on how the AC program works, owners and even dealers techs don't know if this is "normal" or not.

When the AC program overrides (even non automatic AC setups), there should be a description of it in the owner's manual. Chrysler dropped the ball on this one.

I can't speak to the compressor turning off and on by its own when the A/C is on, but I can tell you the issue described above is definitely not right, and the tech's are dumbfounded so far. Hopefully all of us working together thought the U.S. will get some proper resolution.

I was hoping this would have been sorted out by the time the 2013's hit since the threads had died down.

I guess not...

When my Jeep arrives, I'll test it, call the dealer, and notify Chrysler.

It does it on my 2012 and the 2013s. I have been at the dealer and demonstrated the operation described. I have taken this complaint to the owner of the dealership, the call center as well as an executive complaint. I have had a Chrysler tech inspector as well as the District Manager from the Southwest Business Center on site and all they will say the vehicle is "working as designed."

I have other 2012 Chrysler products and they don’t demonstrate similar conditions with the remote start and A/C engagement. It’s pretty sad when you buy an extra cost option that prohibits you from turning off the A/C. I suspect the problem is larger than just a “flash” update and Chrysler is just standing their ground on “working as designed”. Its curious the remote start feature doubled in cost from 2012 to 2013. I was thinking that must be to fund the reengineering of the A/C controls. (HAHA)

I thought about filing a lemon law. I think an arbitrator would look favorably on my case that I have a car that I can’t turn the A/C off in these economic times

I also thought that the Remote Start option going from $200 to $495 was another reason why the issue had been resolved. I figured they had to rework some stuff and upped the price to cover the cost.

i noticed this problem in the summer. (2013 JKUR-w/autotemp)

But now, in autumn, temps are below 40 degrees during RS. AC light never comes on below 40 degrees, but defrost light is on.

I set fan at low, heat on high, blowing any direction . . . no AC light, idle around 800.

Does your AC still come on below 40????

I can't even get my remote start to work. I press the button twice and it just beeps then nothing. Honestly Ive had nothing but issues with this Jeep (two 02 sensors and a cat converter inside 5000km's) and its my first one. Im seriously starting to regret my purchase. Not sure why they decided to play around with temp controls... just leave well enough alone, there was nothing wrong with the way it was years ago, they are trying to be way to fancy... for a Jeep!. Anyway, forge on I guess ;0(

I think if you have less than 1/4 tank it won't remote start. It also won't remote start if there is a check engine light or code. Maybe it's a stored code related to your O2 sensor issue?

Auto Temp is Hit and Miss

My 2013 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara is in the dealership service department, as we speak, for this very issue. I made a two 10 hour trips and on both, the automatic temperature control failed to adjust according to the interior temperature of the cabin. I had used the remote start before both trips so I am assuming that the lack of heat may be due to this issue.

I can't believe that I haven't noticed this thread before. I noticed my wife's 2013 JKU Sahara had the same issue as the OP has mentioned but just figured it was designed that way. My 2014 JK POLAR does the same thing. Glad to know I'm not the only one!

The first week of ownership I noticed my 13 JKUS did the same thing as the OP, although I don't have the auto temp feature. Just remote start. It would keep running the ac compressor even in the morning when it was chilly and after I turned the ac off (the light would turn off). Totally forgot about this.

Our 2013 Sahara was built in Dec. 2012. We have the auto temp control and remote start. My wife uses the remote start all the time and she keeps the fan selector to a preset position (not auto) and the vent selector to a specific mode (not auto). She says she does not have the AC problem with hers.

Perhaps this was fixed at the factory in late 2012. Ours also came with the pinch seams already cut from the factory, a December 2012 factory change.

Interesting. Seems to be a design issue, as you all have noted. Of course, I ordered remote start but no auto temp. I hate those auto temp setups. My 4Runner has it and it drives me a bit bonkers.

Thanks to the OP for making a thread about this issue. I have a 2013 Sahara JKU and noticed the exact same problem Was about to call my dealership but decided to look it up. I am almost tempted to tell them to fix it anyway to make them squirm (I am sending it in for the third time for the same freedom panel leak) but I am afraid they will mess something else up in the process.

Again thanks, it's good to know I am not crazy!
