Automatic temperature controls worth it?

I see air conditioning is standard but what is the difference between air condition and AC with automatic temp control? And is it worth it. Looking at my options for a 2014 wrangler or 2014 wrangler unlimited

Of course some will say that it is a complete wast of money, but I love mine. I set my temp control to what I like and have hardly ever touched it since last May. The only time I touch it is to turn it down If I get a call on my handsfree system. If I just started down the road and my temp is not yet up to the set point, the fan is pretty high for a phone conversation but that is about it. The rest of the time it stays where I set it.

While my Jeep isn't the first vehicle I have owned with automatic climate control, its the first that I actually leave it set to "auto". It does work pretty well.

Auto temp is nice with remote start if you forget to crank the dial to hot before you get out.

Hell no. When I'm cold, I'm not thinking, "Gee, I wish I were 71°f right now." Instead, I just want the hottest fracking air possible blowing on my feet, or i really need to defrost the shit out of my windshield. Automatic temp control never really does what you actually want it to do unless you overexaggerate your intended temperature, and then bring it down to reasonable levels when you're comfortable, in which case you might as well be just using manual controls.

I have it, but it was on the Jeep and it wasn't a deal breaker. After living with it for a while, it is nice, but not sure I would ordered it. I find that I can not leave mine at 72 and be happy. When it's 20 outside and I am going down the road, it's cold at 72.

I passed on it. Mostly because UpHillbill said he would not have ordered it and I knew I would not use it much. At the time I was also worried about longevity of climate control (doors) vs a vehicle with a simple fan control.

In hindsight, I wish I would have ordered it just so I could say I have it and piss off the Jeep "purists". It isn't expensive (unless Chrysler is doing another price gouge...I mean increase)...so if you want it, get it.

I like it because setting both dials to auto distributes the air evenly through all the vents making it less likely to get uneven hot or cold spots which can get annoying.

^^^^ This
I find that it is one of the few "Electronic" things that they got right on the Jeep. Many other things that the CANBUS controls such as the Horn, & lights, feels like they used a refurbished Commodore Vic20 to control them.

Our 2013 had the manual, our new 2014 has the auto. I would do the auto again, I think it's worth it.

It's 500 bucks now. Totally not worth it, imo.

Yikes!
Is that a new price change coming up? It is showing $345 on the Jeep website..which is still a lot more than than what it used to be. When I ordered my 2013, it was still a $155 option MSRP.

I would pay $155 for it....I would not pay $345 for it....and I would show Jeep my if they were asking for $500.

With some of the recent pricing increases....Jeep is putting on a price gouging clinic that would even make Apple blush.

Wow.

Yeah, mine has it, and it was well worth the $155, IMO. No way in hell I would have paid $500 for it though....

Maybe I was thinking of something else (heated seats?).. whoops. Still I remember saying it wasn't worth it when my salesman told me the price. It was definitely $155 back in September and it has since increased quite a bit up to 345.

The auto ac is brilliant. Like someone already said, they nailed this system. On my last one I decided to go "basic" and didn't get it - man did I miss it. And the heated seats - missed that, too. Unless you want a stripped down model with half doors or manual locks/windows then I say get it.

I'm still wishing I just had manual controls! I want to set where and how much air is blowing, and how hot or cool it is. My fault, I ordered it myself. Sounded good in the brochure....

On a cold day, until the thermocouple in the dash reaches temperature (10 -15 minutes for me) you can only get either blazing hot air, or, in the coldest setting, dead cold air, nothing in between.

Once the thermocouple just above your right knee reaches your temperature setting, you have a tiny range where you can adjust, and readjust constantly, to get the right incoming air temp.

I think my, and my wife's, problem with the auto A/C is that we have driven nothing but convertibles (sports cars then Jeeps) for so long that we both feel like we can't breath unless there is a good wind in our faces. So, with the top on, we always want the fan at max - blasting air at us. With the auto A/C I have to constantly play with the temp setting to "fool" the system into producing the steady incoming air temperature we want. With manual, you can set the incoming air temp and forget it.

I understand that for folks who set everything on auto, once warmed up, the auto A/C will keep the cab temps constant, but, in my experience, with very little air movement - I just can't stand still air in a vehicle...

$138 invoice, $145 MSRP, on the 2012s. Pretty easy to "fall for it" at that price.

2014s when introduced - $195 MSRP.

Now (2014s) $345 MSRP. Not such a bargain....

I got spoiled with my wife's 2013 Explorer Limited and added it on when I ordered my 2014 JKURX. The option was $307 on my invoice, but I'm sure you can get it at a much better price. I added about 7k of options, and most of the other options I picked were at 50% of invoice, so I'm OK with paying a bit more for that one

Heated seat went up as well....but you are thinking of the axle ratio upgrade.

In about 16 months, it went from $50 to $95 to $195 to $495.

Jeep....perfecting the price gouge.

I paid $138 for it...totally worth it. Just set it and forget it. I have hardly touched it in the past year...whether the top was on or off. If you want manual control, just take it off of auto.

Not true.

You can manually control fan speed and air damper settings, but NOT air temp, except by constant fiddling with the temperature control, and it's never just right. YMMV.

I have it and have lived in El Paso, TX and North Pole, AK.

It was great in El Paso, TX kept the Jeep cool and at an even temperature with the hard top.

It isn't worth it in North Pole, AK my heater runs on hi all the time when it's 0 to -40.

Now would I get it again, YES. I don't plan on living in NP, AK forever and the Jeep will go with me back to someplace warm!!!

Not related to the Auto Temp Controls
Note: when you auto start your Jeep the AC compressor comes on at 55 and above. It stays on too even when you don't need it until you turn your vehicle off...

So far... I like it. Seems to work great. I read many threads about how much it sucked and wasn't worth the money while I was waiting for my Jeep to be built.

I have had the Jeep for about week now and everything is working great.

Up here in NorthEastern Ohio we have had all weather in the past week. 20 degrees to 70 degrees, with rain and snow.
The AC functions perfect and the Heat functions great as well.

I don't agree. If I want it hotter, I just turn up the temp control...cooler and I turn it down. How is that different from manual? I've never had to do any "constant fiddling" to get the temp just right. I've fiddled with it much less than on any vehicle I ever had with manual. The auto temp control is, in my opinion, far superior to the manual. Sorry you don't like yours.

I guess we can all agree that people that don't have the auto feature will down play it and people that have it will praise it.
