Posted this in the TJ forum because that's what I drive but this happened to my buddy and wanted to show you guys and gals. They went into their hotel, came back out 15 min later and it was toast.

No more as of yet but I did a google search and apparently the auto JK's have a problem with the transmission cooler and the tranny overheats the fluid and it catches on fire.

damn. that definitely is awful. wonder what chrysler is going to do (or NOT do). seems like they don't claim responsibility yet from what I've read about what another forum member posted about his burning jeep. good luck with getting a new one and glad everyone is okay.

Just saw another thread on this same subject. Apparently there have been numerous accounts of the 2010 wranglers going up in flames for no apparent reason. Turns out that there are some issues that need to be adressed....

Still, it seems unlikely it's actually reaching that temperature?

Its a 2011 6 speed BLACK ops. 23,000 miles. No trouble to speak of except issues with the emergency brake as of the last 2 months. I took my 4 sons to school, came home, hopped in the shower. When I turned off the water I could hear the alarm, looked out the window and she was in flames. 14 minutes. Arson investigator for the city said it looks like it started in the center dash area. The front top panels were off so plenty of oxygen. Nothing left of the interior. The engine is still clean with no visable damage. The only visable damage underneath that struck the investigator as odd was a grey plastic box under the passenger seat that was partially melted with some sort of spring. It was 55 degrees this morning when we left for school and the fire happened around 9:45, Hard to imagine heat being an issue.

The 42RLE auto optimum op temp is 180° F, but being all aluminum and so enclosed in the JK/JKU body--and having a totally defunct stock cooler, it can climb to 300 degrees in less than 5 minutes and if trying to tow uphill/ or cruise in sand in 4hi (without aux cooler) the spill over fluid can spontaneously burn/fire--

If the jeeps, 07 thru 11 has the "hot-OIL" dash warning--it's pretty rare for a fire to occur, but shit happens !
