B3ND3R JKU Rock Lobster build

Hey all,
I have been on many Jeep forms for years. I have an old beat up 95 JY - that is what got me started. Anyhow, now is the time for a new Jeep.

Enter B3ND3R - a 2013 JK Unlimited Rock Lobster Rubicon.

I have gained tons of information reading the build threads and I figured it was time to give back a little.

This will document my Jeep build.

Have fun and don't forget to wave.

Here is the latest status from jeepstatus.com. It has been on this since last week. I was told that it should be ready to pick up this Thursday. It will be a long week of waiting.

I ended up ordering one because they didn't have one that had the options I wanted.

While I am waiting, I would like to thank Jeep for making such a great vehicle. I like all the great colors out there. I ended up going with the Rock Lobster because Detonator Yellow and Dozer are no longer options. Some of the other colors out there are great too - Gecko is great, but too bright for my taste.

I would also like to thank all the vendors out there that make owning a Jeep extra fun by giving us so many options to make our Jeeps our own.

Slowly but surely.
Here is the latest status.

The dealer said it might be ready Friday.

Good thing it will be ready soon. I already have some of my mods waiting in the garage.

Here is my new Jeep sitting in the driveway.

I picked it up on Thursday. It will be fun to have before and after pictures, so this will be the starting picture.

Now the modifications can begin. Oh, and if you look closely, you will see what the first mod was (or see the next post).

On to the first mod.

I figured I would start out with some small stuff. After looking at many of the Jeeps on this forum and out in the wild, I decided that I didn't like the stock antenna. I found a stubby offroad antenna at antennaX. It was a pretty cheep mod, but it really makes a big difference in the looks.

The reception does not seem to be any different than the stock antenna.

before

during the mod (no antenna)

after

$16
about 5 minutes to install
I added a drop of loctite just so I wouldn't have to worry about it twisting out.
Shipping was quick.
Packaging was good.

Good eye. I think the short antenna makes the Jeep look so much better.

Subscribed. Love the color (I also have a Rock Lobster Rubi). Looking forward to seeing your build. I haven't done much yet, just the antenna, Daystar hood latches, plasti dipped the trail rated badge and key holes, and painted the muffler black.

Nice work keep us posted on the progress.

Not to turn this into an AntennaX bash, but I'm very displeased about the (lack of) reception on mine. However, I really like the look, and I put mine on every time I travel (since I would use either satellite or the HDD).

Your first picture looks AWESOME. Like it should be on the cover of the brochure.

Nice Jeep. Just don't park next to me, or we might get confused.

My floor mats arrived yesterday. After reading posts on the forum, I decided to go with the Quadratec floor mats.

On the garage floor - ready to be installed.

Installed

$188 - A little steep for floor mats (I thought)
about 5 minutes to install
Packaging was good. Shipping was quick (and Free - thanks Quadratec).

Love the way your RL is turning out. Bought a RL Sahara for my wife about 2 months ago and we really like the color!

I just got done blacking out the Trail Rated badge, replacing the front grille Jeep logo with the OEM black one and removing all decals...pics to follow soon if I ever get the chance.

Btw, we have RL painted fenders that we are going to be replacing with Bushwacker flats. If anyone of y'all is interested they are mint and will be for sale!

Thanks. I am really pleased with it. I have lots of plans for it - I just hope my bank account holds out.

I would really like to see the black Jeep logo. That is on my list of easy mods, but I would be interested in seeing it before I do it.

Nice to see a RL build thread. We love out RL JKU! Most of the surface rust is gone from my axles and suspension

For my RL, I removed the Sahara badges, installed the Trucklite LED headlights (amazing lights!) with the rallyelights.com harness (no flicker), NAV-TV w/ rear camera, Antenna-X, '13 Rubi wheels & tires, safety red tow hooks, and I hope to install the MOPAR fuel door this weekend. I also plan to order the 10A hood.

Looking forward to seeing what you do.

In my humble opinion every RL would look good on the cover of a brochure. I really don't understand why it didn't get more love.

I don't know if anyone really considers this a mod, but I was playing around with my vinyl cutter and added some stickers to the Jeep. These are cut from black reflective vinyl. I have not taken any night pics to see how good they reflect.

After

Detail - rear fender

I got the Jeep Crawler idea from this thread.

Have a nice weekend.

The next mod was the installation of the ACE Rock Rails.

First off, I want to say the Rock Rails are great. They are well built, sturdy and look great. They are a great addition to the Jeep.

This weekend, it was off to the carwash to get all the bugs and dirt off the Jeep. I finally passed 500 miles and figured it was time to clean it up a bit.

Jeep in the carwash.

Off to the garage to install the ACE Rock Rails. Overall, it was a pretty easy install.

First, lay out the rock rails.

Remove the body bolts. There is a little trick to this. Once you screw the bolts out, they sort of hang there in the rubber body spacers. You have to pry them out. I had to search for that online. I thought they would just drop out, but they didn't.

Grind off a little bit of the washers.

Paint the washers (just in case).

Install the rock rails. I put a little loctite on and tightened the bolts back to 80 ft-lbs. So, do I look like I am working? I had planned on doing all the work myself, but my son and his friend came out to the garage and insisted on helping (kind of the Tom Sawyer thing). They made it so much easier to put the rock rails on. When installing the bolts, you just push them up and give them a little tap with a rubber mallet to get them started. Then you can tighten them up.

Since I had help with the job, I had to "pay" my workers by taking them over to the sandbox for a little play time.

$340 + shipping
about 30 minutes (each side) to install
I added loctite just so I wouldn't have to worry about the bolts working their way out.
I also sprayed the mounting boxes on the rails (I read that some people have had a little rust in there) as well as the washers with black rustoleum paint.
Shipping was quick - I got mine from Rebel Offroad.
Packaging was good.
Product is very sturdy.
And did I say they look great?

Here are a couple more pictures of the rock rails. They work great as a step. And they look really good.

Fuel Door Mod

So, this was a pretty easy one.
I am not sure why this is not included on all Jeeps.

Purchased Fuel Door

Paint the screws black. I am trying to keep as much of the shiny stuff off my Jeep. I removed the screws, painted them black and replaced them (used a drop of loctite). This makes it look a lot better.

After

It is just begging for a "FUEL" vinyl label.

$90 - from a Jeep dealer on ebay
about 5 minutes to paint screws (plus drying time)
about 5 minutes to install
Packaging was good.
Shipping was quick.
Product appears to be good.

why did you have to guy floor matts? Rubicon's come with them. If you didn't get them you should go back to the dealer and get them.

It did come with some carpet floormats (is that what you mean?), but I wanted something a little more durable and something that would hold the mud and not stay so wet.
