Backing into the garage

Ok, am I the only one who can't back my Jeep into the garage straight? I have to make several attempts each night. It still isn't straight. I use my mirrors and still can't do it.

I don't know about backing but I have a Ram 1500 Crew Cab truck that's my daily driver. Every time I drive my wife's jeep, I always park at an angle inside the lines. I am so used to doing the big swing when I park the big truck to make sure the rear end is straight in the parking space. I guess I do the same thing with the Jeep and end up over correcting.

Don't feel bad. I have been the one people will trust there vehicles to drive and get in back in to crazy places since I was 15 and in high school and the first time I lined my Jeep under my hoist in my garage I had trouble too. I came from a HD diesel sierra crew cab long bed and it would take almost my entire drive way to make a correction, made my suburban fill like a sports car, so I know how you feel dropping down do a Jeep :) Sure is more fun to drive though :)

It's definitely the fenders, they throw you off especially if you have stock tires which you can't see because of the fenders. I have backed every car and truck I've ever owned into almost every parking space and the jeep threw me off a bit at first too, you get used to it though.

LOL, I just got mine and I've been doing the same thing. Never had an issue when backing up my car or the wifes SUV. So I thought I was losing it a little. Thanks for the reassurance that I'm not the only one!!

Im at the point that I just dont care and will get used to it but I am concerned I dont do what I did to our Isuzu Rodeo several years ago which was to not have it pulled in all the way and then close the garage door. The metal handle just barely touched the spare and ripped the vinyl tire cover and tore it pretty good. There isnt a cover on the jeep but the spare rim would get gouged if I slip up again.

I feel you need it straight when you are using your hard top hoist. I don't like dings in my paint or extra work :) My hoist is far to the side of my garage and I have to turn in to the garage because there is no straight entrance from the outside. It is almost easier to come at an angle instead of trying to keep this thing straight.

LOL My freaking garage is 12 foot large ( outside let's say 11 foot inside ) If i'm not straight in the middle, i can't open the doors all the way on both side ! so i must aligned it well or it's not funny ! Fun thing is before the garage, when i parked outside, i had a hard time to be parallel to the parking spot. But when i back up in the garage, i have no problems being straight. ?!? ALSO i did attempt to back up without my doors and just forget about it. I didn't do it, was to afraid to dent something on the car or the garage !!!

I've only done it once...it sucked. Garage allows you to open the jeep doors (if they're on) about half way to sneak out due to the narrowness and the driveway is on about a 75-80 degree slope with a manual trans. 2 door. Good times for sure! And as someone mentioned about the fenders, yep they mess me up because I can't see em but know they are there just waiting to be smashed up - I hope :)

The blind spot mirrors help a LOT! One of the best, cheap mods I've done! :happyyes:

For my hoist, I backed it in the first time and taped lines on the floor around the back half of the jeep with white duct tape.

As I back in now to take the top off and on, i lower the mirrors to see the tape lines.

Is it perfect every time? No, but it gives me reference.

Practice. Takes time, blind spot mirrors do tend to help. I've backed into my garage for 10 years with multiple vehicles. The bulkiest was a Chevy Avalanche, smallest was a Cadillac Catera. The Jeep is the squirliest to back in and easily goes off track. But after a while you will get the hang of it.

Wrangler owners are used to going forward because nothing can stop their Jeep.

They just don't get enough practice backing off...

Can't say I've noticed with me. Does anybody use backup camera's? I personally don't, but seems like some people swear by them. Tried them, but didn't like it. It's mirrors, a glance around and positional awareness for me.

Then again, I've been driving almost 26 years and still don't use cruise control cross country. Though I do use a throttle lock on my motorcycle when slabbing it.
