I've had my new 285/70/17 Fierce Attitudes (Duratrac's sister tire) balanced twice, once from DTD and once at my local (actually not so local, about an hour away) DT. I've got some vibration. Got under the Jeep and looked. Both passenger side tires have 12 ounces of weight give or take a 1/4 ounce. The drivers side has about half that on each tire.
Seems like too much. Am I correct in that assumption? Seems like the tires need to be rotated 180 degrees on the wheel or they are bad. Even with that much weight I've got vibration.
Too much weight. Have them Road Force balanced with A Hunter 9700 and a qualified tech. They will check rouout and the machine will tell the tech if a tire needs to be rotated 180* http://www.gsp9700.com/search/findgsp9700.cfm
My experience with tire shops is shitty. Not one tech took the time needed to balance bigger tires. As mentioned in my build thread .. Some of the crap they spew is humorous. Get them Road forced if you Haven't. Just be aware it's the techs discretion whether the tire is broken down or not.
I just had my tires done. Standard balance. 1 tire was pretty bad. I always re-torque the lugs when I arrive Home. I guess these guys don't believe in a torque wrenches, and power the lugs on with a impact gun. Who knows if the lugs were torqued in the proper sequence.
Re-torque in a star pattern and then check torque again in 50-100 miles.
I have a 2dr with 15" aluminum wheels and BFG KM2 35's. Discount tire has balanced them 4 times, even pulled 3 of the 4 tires, rotated them 180* and re installed. I still have vibrations over 65mph. I asked for road force every time, they have the machine, but every time they gave me an excuse not to use it. I have spun them in the air up to 40mph and they are round and true. Should I pay another shop to road force them since discount won't? Or do I have to live with it like discount tells me?
My fave excuse "Bigger tires won't ever balance out perfectly"
Even before I say why I'm there lol
"Moron ... Who says I'm having issues?, all tires regardless of size need to be balanced... Now do your job"
I'm calling DTD in the morning. I'm going to tell them I'm unhappy and I paid for RF and got tires that weren't balanced. I then had to drive an hour each way to their nearest shop to have them poorly balanced again. They'll probably call the local shop and have them call me. I will talk to the manager there and set up an appointment. I'll probably ask for my RF money back since it didn't work.
Good luck. Sounds like a plan.
You can try rotating front to rear ?
Fwiw, the very first time I had my tires RF'd, they did not rotate any of the tires. I asked why .. He said "it cost more"..... Really?
The jeep drove fine so I did not return.
That sounds like a great start. Next chance I get I will be back demanding road force balancing. I'm tired of driving down the road waiting for the parts to rattle off my new Jeep.
A tire can be balanced but have high road force. The Road Force Measurement if high would indicate a tire issue. Since you paid for it would ask for the report.
See, that's what's bugging me. I paid for DTD's Ride Match, which I suppose is that same thing but maybe not. Either way, I paid for $50 worth of something that didn't balance my tires. I know my tires were shipped with nearly the same weight as they have now. DT told me they were all about an ounce off. They didn't say high or low. In any case, even 11 ounces is too much and I've got vibration. Kind of feel that $50 was wasted.
Also a bit annoying my Jeep rode great before the new tires. Now vibration. No steering wheel shake. I felt a bit of that driving around the other day.
I called my discount tire today and told them my balance issue story. I also mentioned hub centric rings (since my aftermarket wheels are lug centric) and asked if they were supposed to be supplied with my wheels. They said they were and could be the cause of my problems. I kept thinking they are balancing the tires on the hub with the cone, then mounting them on my jeep by the lugs. Long story short they are ordering them for me at no cost, I will try those and see what happens, if they don't help they did agree to road force balance them.
I got the hub centering rings installed for free from DT, noticed a 50% improvement. They and the 2nd discount tire shop I went to gave me the same story about not wanting to road force balance the tires, they both said they would charge me $100, it would take 3-4 hrs and thought it would make my vibrations worse. I got the same opinion from a 3rd shop that was a different brand. With the centering rings I can live with it.
Buchta, I was just about to purchase 15 bully pros with the 35 km2. After reading your comments I am a little hesistant. I considered paying the extra $50 for the ride match road force what ever it is but like flyfish said how do you know it was done?
Do people with 17s have this much of an issue as well? Maybe its hit or miss. My jeep rides pretty smooth with the rubis.
If my jeep was a daily driver I would be pissed at my current situation, but being it only sees a few thousand miles a year I can live with it. I'm going to go somewhere else and try one last time for balancing, but at this point I think they are shitty tires for the street. I have no issues below 65mph, between 65-75 it pulses, rumbles/vibrates, the mirrors shake to the rhythm. At 78 its perfect, above 78 it gets progressively worse with speed.
I went with 15s due to the lightest possible tire and wheel weight combo, at this point I wouldn't worry about tire weight, only off road durability and on road balance ability.
I was leaning towards those exact reasons as well. Ok looks like I will splurge some more for a 17 setup.
