Best dash mount/holder for cell phone for normal use and recording driving?

I have been looking at a cell phone dock/holder for my '13 jk. I want something that can hold it just above the radio buttons. That way I can easily use it but also so I can record as the camera will be facing out towards the windshield. I do not want something permanent or anything that requires drilling into dash but would prefer something that stayed in place during offroad adventures.

I currently own both a Galaxy S3 and iPhone 5 . It would be nice to be able to use either in the holder but not required, one or the other is fine.

Any suggestions?

I use a Pro Clip mount for my Droid RAZR Maxx.

I don't need a charger connection. I only have to charge the RAZR Maxx every other day.

Ram mount makes a mount for everything, and they work great!

Can't recall the brand right now but I use this:

Name:	image-4225649718.jpg
Views:	273
Size:	176.6 KB
ID:	244281

It holds the phone under tension and I have it set up so that's its sort of held against the dash.

It's easy to reach and works great for recording video with no shaking (until I get an HD Pro).

thanks guys i will take a look into it.

i was also possibly looking at dash mount cameras specifically for this type of stuff but they are $100 or more and my phone is always with me so this makes more sense.

I went with the longest possible so that the camera isn't obstructed by the mount. Provide a perfect view when shooting video.

I used one of these. However, anything that fits a 17 mm ball should work. I only used the clip part of it, but it's nice that it is device agnostic, so I won't have any issues should I go with a different phone/gadget in the future.

Daystar Upper Dash Panel with GPS Mount

In Minnesota it is ILLEGAL to attach things [GPS, phones, cameras] to the windshield!!! The cop cars do it. Just don't tell them that...

I vote for the Daystar as well!

Remove your factory tray. Remove the screw/bolt from the dash. Use the same screw/bolt with the ball mount and snug it into place. Set your new tray into place.

That gave me a place to attach accessories.

I did a search on eBay for GPS mounts and found one that would connect my new dash mount to my GPS mount. I canalized the parts I needed from the eBay mount.

It works great.

I use the iottie easy flex 2. It's cheap and works great attached to the window or dash. It's the best phone holder I've ever had.

(Edit: sorry jackster3, didn't see your post, obviously not an answer for you, just a phone mount...)

I'm gonna try and go somewhere near the radio in the dash instead of up higher by the glass. Picked up some high strength Velcro and using a regular phone case. Problem is I have no idea where to put it.

ok so the daystar dash does NOT fit the ram mounts. the ball in the daystar is too small. i guess i should have checked this. now to fabricating something that will make that ball bigger.

side note: ram mounts are quality built stuff.

I use a ProClip mount as well. I initially had the holder for an iPhone and then swapped it out for an HTC 8. The mount has worked great to take pictures and movies while driving. They also have an option for mounting two devices to the single mount.

Try iBolt for Android devices & JustMobile for Apple products. I've used both and recommend them.

The Daystar is pretty awesome. Simple to install. Really does look stock. The only issues I am having with it is the fact that my Garmin vibrates a bit and I cannot turn it all the way towards me without the mount coming off of the Daystar ball. I am OK with leaving it facing a bit forward as I hate suction mounts. I put a few pieces of 3M foam tape under it tonight. I will test it out tomorrow to see if some of the vibration is gone. Either way, well worth the cash for the clean look and ease of install!

there is a solution that replaces your front grab bar on the passenger side and the bolt on the left side sticks out with a ball on the end that fits all the ram mount stuff.
