Best over-sized tire carrier?

Which over sized tire carrier do you think is the best option and why? I am about to order one but cannot figure which to order. Thank you

The new Teraflex Hinged Tire Carrier is really nice. It doesn't add a bunch of weight light a rear bumper/tire carrier combo. It keeps the spare tire as close to the rear gate as possible which looks factory and helps with 'departure angle'. It allows for tires up to 37-38". Thats what i've got on order right now. It may not be the 'coolest' mod but i prefer function first. Good luck.

Ya, I really like the design and look of the TF carrier, but honestly I just cant bring myself to spend that much on a carrier.

I got the Rugged Ridge XHD rear bumper and swing away tire carrier. I really like it but the latch the handle locks into is only mounted with 2 small bolts. Drill all the way through the mount and put longer bolts and nylon lock nuts so it won't rattle.

Yep, I love my AEV carrier, along with the fuel caddy. Very well built, no rattles, looks great, and IMO worth thr price tag.
Plus I don't have to change bumpers!

Ouch that's almost $700 for the Teraflex carrier. They have the bumper and tire carrier by Smiity Built on eBay right now for $509. Thinking of pulling the trigger on that one.

Well as much as I would love to get a bumper with a swing away gate, I love the thought of the spare opening with the rear gate. So I would love to hear some reviews on the over sized tire carriers that bolt in where the stock one is. Thank you!

I have the Bestop Highrock and it's not too bad. The main reason I got it was because it opens with the tailgate.

Pros:
  • Opens with the gate.
  • Brackets for Hi-lift jack, CB antenna, fire extinguisher, etc.
  • Comes with LED brake light.
  • Can install trailer hitch and clevis rings.
  • Easy installation.
Cons:
  • It's textured and I would have liked powder coated.
  • No rings to attach trailer safety chains.
  • Had to enlarge the holes to be able to install the clevis rings and trailer hitch.
  • Had to buy longer bumpstops to go between the tailgate and tire.
  • Had to re-adjust the shackle between the carrier and door once or twice to stop a rattle.
Overall, Im happy with it.

Bestop High Rock

I have one..installed it myself...4 hours. Very heavy duty, opens with the door yet there is no weight on the door!. Even had a 3rd brake light.

Can you use it with the stock bumper or do you have to get the bumper as well?

I've got the AEV tire carrier with AEV bumper, and love the fact that is its integrated with the rear gate. Works great and zero rattles. And someday I'll add the gas caddy. The tower is also handy for mounting rear lights and/or antennas. You can buy just the tire carrier and use it with the factory bumper. It comes with a template to drill a hole in your factory bumper. Good luck, I know these decision are hard. I'm glad the wallet is empty so no more decisions for a while.

just my personal preference. i like it because you can open the tail gate without opening anything else and it also has a winch plate.

Expedition One Rear Bumper with Smooth Motion Tire Carrier

I like the "open with gate" feature. I do with it had optional fuel can mounts, but hopefully soon.

I have this same setup, except for the TJ. Absolutely love it! As stated above under the cons section, there was some additional adjustments you have to do that are not indicated in the instructions, but overall, its not a big deal at all. I didn't have to buy longer bump stops, i just used some washers on the ones they provided.

Its a little pricey, but very solid.

Are you serious? Does anybody know if this is true? Not going to buy it if it's a knock off. Thanks for bringing that up!

I have the RR XHD and really like it. I also drilled the latch holes all the way through like 2012gecko. I pulled the threads out of the tube the first time that I latched it. I now have 1/4" S.H.C.S. w/nuts & washers and it works great.

I also sprayed LPS 3 on all mating surfaces to help prevent corrosion from salt in the winter. I did the same on the front XHD bumper when I mounted it.

Are you referring to the “E-Auto Grilles” one? I believe they are indentical to the Smitty ones just not carrying the Smittybilt name. Even down to manufactured in the same Chinese factory.

To the OP, I have the OR Fab tire carrier. I love it but requires drilling into the body and doesn’t swing open with the tail gate. I have the Jerry Can holder version to clear my 4 gallons of rotopax cans but they sell a non can holder which will hold snug to the gate and a rotopax version that will clear 2 gallon rotopax cans, therefore be a little closer than mine is.

For anyone with the ACE rear bumper and carrier, does it allow the rear gate to open all the way? The reason I ask is that I have a CB antenna on my tire carrier currently and if it remains in the same area, the rear glass will not open unless the gate opens the entire way. I have a quick disconnect, but it would be a pain having to remove the antenna everytime I wanted to open the rear glass.

I just ordered the TF Carrier today. If you are running a 35, you don't need all of the extra pieces that take the price to $700. I'm running 35s and have talked with Teraflex and a few other shops that deal with them and they assure me that it will hold a 35 with no problems. I just ordered mine through AllJeep.com for a heck of a deal. Ryan over there really hooked me up. I priced the OR-Fab, the Gen-Right, and the Teraflex and the Teraflex ended up being the best deal. Not to mention, it is a one-step opening system. I don't have to pull pins, move levers, release clips, or anything else. Just grab the door handle and open. That's my .02 man, but you have to do what is right for you.
