Best tire carrier/hinge

Shopping between the teraflex, rugged ridge, smittybuilt.

Like this...

Smittybilt Wrangler Pivot HD Tire Carrier 2843 (07-17 Wrangler JK) - Free Shipping

Kinda feel the teraflex is out becauseof the price w the adj. tire mount.

Anyone already done the comparisons between each?

I've never had a problem with TeraFlex, but it is pretty expensive, but looks very stock which I like.

I love my RuggedRidge Spartacus, however it works for my use. If I were running larger than 35's with heavy wheels I would feel more comfortable with a bumper mounted carrier.

I went with the Teraflex. I spent hours looking up teraflex vs rugged ridge and all the reviews and write ups pointed me to the TF. Although a bit expensive it's definitely the best quality hinge mounted carrier on the market.

I also went with TF - feels very well built, and looks stock.

Have 35x12.5x17 on it.

Cost was like $100 more than RR for me.

Go Teraflex HD hinge and tire carrier, but shop price and maybe wait for a sale. It is pricey, but I was able to find a heck of a deal on it.....Easter sale for about $560.

Best deal on Amazon is $590 with free shipping right now.

I like my rugged ridge tire carrier also, especially for the price. I will be replacing all the bolts as soon as the snow melts. with stainless steel, the rust is beyond belief.

If you go Rugged Ridge, you might as well buy the Quadratec Tactik kit. It's complete and I clues the break light extension. Rick will get you a good deal and should be cheaper than Rugged Ridge. They are identical so price is your only deciding factor between the 2.

I picked up the Teraflex hinge and used the stock carrier. My spare weighs 84 lbs and put a golf ball in between the bumper and tire. I think it fits nice.

I have the TF HD hinge and carrier. It is rock solid and keeps the wheel close to the vehicle. I like that the carrier is adjustable and had the relocation bracket to move the third brake light in to the center of the wheel since my 35's would have covered it.

Teraflex all the way! It is the most expensive but it is quality and hanging my 37' tire with no rattles or movement.

I put the Smitty Pivot on mine last week. Looks like an exact copy of the Teraflex. Works really well and holds my 37.

Northridge had a great deal on BF 2016 that made the TF much less painful. Running the OEM tire carrier with the TF HD hinge with no shake, rattle or roll.

I realize it wasn't on your list, but the price point is similar to Teraflex. Maybe give PSC a chance?

Attachment 3407178I originally installed a Rugged Ridge and removed/returned it after 4 months. There was play in the hinges and I got a thud over every bump. The real kick in the pants was that RR did not want to warranty the item even though there were a bunch of people complaining around the same time. The vendor I purchased from ultimately processed the return.

I bought the Teraflex and could not be happier and recommend it every time now. The $100 price difference (shop around with the forum vendors) is worth it in my opinion.

EDIT: Not sure why the picture is sideways, it is right side up on my computer desktop??

Rattling tailgate is my primary reason for looking into this. It drives me nuts.

Thank you all for your responses.

Personally I think that both the Rugged Ridge Spartacus and the Teraflex HD Hinged Carrier are almost exactly the same in quality. The RR Spartacus has an overall customer rating of 4.8 on our site, and the only negative review I've heard is that the tire mount lacks the level of adjust-ability offered from the Teraflex Kit.

The Teraflex kit has an overall rating of 4.9 on our site, and the only negative review was how the tire mount came loose on the trail with a 35" tire mounted on it.

The decision basically comes down to price at the end of the day. Both hinge designs are two of the same, but it's in the tire mount where the two differ the most. Either you can spend $710.59 on the Teraflex Kit with a tire mount that offers slightly more adjust-ability, or go for the RR Spartacus for $546.99 with a slightly less adjustable tire mount.

**Both of those prices reflect our list price on our site before the WranglerForum discount that we offer, so don't forget to shoot me a PM and I'll take care of you!

If you have any other questions just let me know!

-Jake

Thanks for the honest feedback, Jake! I haven't seen the Morryde tailgate reinforcement and hinge mentioned. What's your review on those? Also, PM me your quote on a set cuz I'm liking their design better.
