better tires front or back?

I got my first jeep just less then 3 weeks ago. 2008 jk x, auto. 40K. love the jeep and love this sight. so thanks to everyone involved.

to simplify things lets say have 2 brand new tires and 2 half worn tires. Should i put the new tires on the front or back. i always thought it was better to have the better tires on the front for traction while turning. the guy at the tire store says the new tires should go on the back.

what would you do?

I'd put the new tires up front. The front end wears faster than the rear due to turns and that sort of thing.

thats what thought too. the front wear faster because there is more pressure on them so they work harder, therefore the better ones should be in front, to do the work. the tire store guy said 'no, no, no. newer ones in the back for traction"

I believe leave rule of thumb is best tires in the rear and the worst up front you have more control if a front one goes out because you control steering.

Traction is in the rear most of the time, which would mean, its always in the rear on pavement roads due to 2WD mode. Thus, i'd put the new ones in the rear. Front only gets torque when in 4WD.

Traction when turning is kind of nullified when the ones on the rear have 100% torque on the road. You certainly dont want the rears to lose traction/skid accelerating when wet, otherwise you can get a nice oversteer and drift on. Fronts dont skid.

If it were a front wheel drive car, that would be different, as you would be accelerating with the fronts. But the JK is a rear wheel drive most of the time. If it were AWD, i'd put one on opposing corners XD

Always put the tires with more tread in the back. The worn tires on the front will cause oversteer when pushed and you will instinctively get off the gas in response. This shifts weight to the front and you'll regain traction. It's much more predictable than the opposite condition where you'll oversteer and unless you're quick and really good, the read end has a high probability of coming around on you.
