Hi There - I am new to the forum and have a question about bike rack, towing, and hitch options for my 2013 Sahara Unlimited. Just wondering which forum to post the question for the best response.
Thanks in advance for the support and being here for us newbies
A bike rack/hitch was my first thing to do since my family likes to ride.
For my personal needs I only used a class II 2in hitch (Rugged Ridge) which was the same rating as intended for my 2010 2dr. 4 bolt install, very easy.
The bike rack took some thought about swingarms and such. I chose the Yakima Ridgeback 4. With this model I am unable to open the tailgate (not really an issue honestly) but when mounted it is about 1-1.5 inches from the spare- nicely tucked in and not too far out is what I wanted. Of course YMMV. Good luck so many choices.
thanks for the tips and warm welcome! didn't see any replies in my email today, so wasn't sure if anyone had read...
so, I have a 2013 Unlimited Sahara and am going on my first trip with it to Burning Man in Nevada...I'll save details on that for another forum
I have the "max tow package" that came with the jeep and will be towing a Teardrop trailer - 8ft by 4ft to the Playa. I also need to bring 2 beach cruiser bikes which brings me to my question...has anyone used this bike rack before? Allen Sports Deluxe 3-Bike Spare Tire Mount Rack
seems like the answer to my "problem", but wanted to check in here to see if you all might have some input on this.
Biggest issue I see there is visibility. The bikes would likely be above the hood line, reducing visibility for normal driving and would likely partially block the already less than satisfactory headlights if doing any night driving.
I used a hitch doubler from harbor freight when towing a trailer from California to Illinois. It allowed me to tow the trailer and use my hitch rack at the same time. It is slightly different than the one shown above, it has two 2 inch receivers.
Stay away from Allen Sports racks. Cheap, poorly made stuff that will either fall apart, scratch your vehicle, scratch your bike, or all of the above. Pay a few extra dollars and go with Yakima or Thule.
Would mounting a bike carrier to the back or top of the teardrop be a problem? We mounted a rack on top of a pop up and it works great. Maybe a hitch on the back of the trailer with a hitch mounted rack?
I did a google image search of teardrop trailer bike rack....lots of cool solutions.
