Hey man welcome to the forum from another newbie.
Please click linky below: What did you do to your JK today? - JeepForum.com
Go to page 1616 for a bad pic of my black spline drive lugs I ordered from Quadratec for the shiny black wheels on my new Willys.
This set of Gorillas are not locks. Yes, they are spline drive but which makes a socket useless but they use the same spline pattern on all of these lugs.
I found that out and returned them for this set which are locks. They sell a set which includes 24 lugs so your spare is covered. Every lug is a lock using a unique spline key.
ProComp spline nuts are OK in warmer climates where they don't use salt on the road. However, one dose of road salt and they rust bad. The Gorilla spline nuts or black chrome acorn nuts are more weather resistant.
I just used a couple of rattle cans of flat black paint. Been over a year and still looking good. Painted the wheels and lugs. I did notice a little shine on one of the lugs . Retighten and touched it up. Thinking the paint on the lugs might be a good thing to tip you off something is getting loose.
Bought a 23 pc Black McGard set and returned it the same day. The lug nuts were smaller in diameter then the stock lug nut and would require some black paint on the rims. Any input on a black lug nut set similar to stock size.
Did you ever find a set of quality lugs in black that were the same diameter as stock?
I just received a set of the McGard black lugs nuts w/ locks. The style of the lock is different from the McGard set from the dealer as the overall diameter is less and the tapered part seems a bit less deep if that makes sense. The same goes for the tapered part on the non-lock nuts.
Upon close inspection I think the silver ring is there even w/ the stock nuts but since they were silver the ring is not as obvious.
I bought the Rugged Ridge from Amazon. Same as what Qtech sells but it was quicker to order Prime for an inexpensive part. They are the same size as the stock lug nuts. Will see how they hold up for $30 for the set. Didn't want a locking set.
I got my set from O'Rilley auto parts. I can't remember the brand but I think it might have been the same ones Quadratec sold. They are spline drive, not locking, but still a theft deterrent.
Going to Discount Tire and O'Rilley's and give them a try. Not sure why the McGard lug nuts would not fit cosmetically. No change from 2016 to 2017 Jeep Wrangler model wheels?
Thanks for this timely thread revival. I've been contemplating some black lugnuts for my stock Willys wheels. Just ordered the Rugged Ridge set plus wheel locks. I'm not overly concerned about wheel theft, but wanted decent quality black lugnuts and these only have a pack of 20. With the five locking nuts, I'll have enough for the spare and a few extras.
McGards from AdvancedAuto 1/2x20. Had to buy 2 kits. When I would rotate by hand they did not rust, when I started using my electric impact wrench they rusted pretty quick. And the "special" socket is universal. I have them on 3 vehicles (same thread pitch) and the socket fits all 3. Also tried it on a couple of co-workers vehicles (import and domestic) and it fit. So they are not theft proof, just keep honest people honest.
I have the black McGard 84563BK 1/2"-20 from Quadratec. They look great. Made in USA. I don't recall noticing the silver. I just checked and tried to photo, but the garage lights were casting shadows and the pictures didn't show much. I guess there may be a little silver showing, but I wouldn't have noticed if not for the posts above.
