I can't speak for why others have put their windshield down, but my buddy did it because of me.

We were heading into the Rubicon one morning, and I'm riding in the back seat. My guts were on fire, and I was slaying the two guys in the front seat. They dropped the windshield (70's era) when we hit the dirt hoping to move some air around.
It didn't work. I continued to bring tears to their eyes all the way to the springs.
