Blew my Tranny--09 JK Unlimited

Hello....New here...Thought I would share my misery....
I have a 2009 JK Unlimited. 2.5' lift with 33' tires. Auto transmission. Other upgrades that really don't need mentioning here...will post pics and other upgrades soon (if I keep the darn thing...)

1. Tranny issue- Have 40,000 miles on jeep. Driving to work on the highway one morning. Notice smoke coming out of the back, then looked like rain on back window. Not raining out. No noises, no warnings..Pulled over....Now transmission no longer functioned. Towed to dealer. They have never seen anything like this (yea, right...). It appears the output shaft just sheared in half, thus causing everything else in the transmission to "blow".... Had to totally rebuild/refurbish the entire transmission (no such thing as a "new" trans for Jeeps I was told...). Trans fluid all over rag top now also. That won't come out. Trying to get new top through dealer and/or Chrysler..(fingers crossed). Now worried all the time that the trans will go again...This SUCKS !!!

2. Just before trans blew, I was scheduled to bring Jeep in for the "gas tank overflow" problem (gas goes everywhere/comes out when you fill up). They were going to reaplace the tank for $800, on my dime. First, why would the same part fix the problem? Why is there no recall, as others have the same issue? Why should I pay a dime? As I was out of warranty, they (dealer) wanted me to pay. Called Chrysler. someone (not sure who) finally agreed to only have me pay $100. Problem will probably come back (just had GASCAP warning on my dash...great...they did something wrong with install...This SUCKS as well......

DO I KEEP HER ???????
Have a nice day

I thought they were offering a lifetime power train in 2009. When did your warranty end? I paid extra and got the lifetime everything. Sucks about your Jeep!

Welcome!!!

As to the tranny issue, I have and old TJ with a 5 speed and it was over $1500 just to replace the seals in the transmission. anything to do with the drive train is going to be expensive.

as to your gas tank problem, I've heard that is a common problem even with the TJs. The easiest solution is to pump your gas by hand and when you hear the gas starting to come up the filler (bubbling and gluging), stop filling it. voiala! extra $800 in your pocket.

So she has a few flaws. We call them character around here.

My 2010 has 5 years / 100,000 miles. They tried to sell me an extended warranty but it was basically $2,000.

How much extra was yours?

If the OP purchased it used it wouldn't have the LTPTW. By "output shaft" do you mean the drive shaft? You could have had a drive shaft issue caused by the lift. Go to JP Magazine and search for an article called "Fatal Angle". If you tore the boot all of the lubrication would have come out of the driveshaft and could have eventually caused the issue you described and wouldn't be covered under warranty.

BTW you wouldn't get a new trans for any manufacturer. All you can get anywhere is a rebuilt one.

I'm sorry you got ripped off with your seals, a total rebuild for an AX15 is $1200.

The lifetime warranty was 1900, but we talked them down to just under 1700.

Just wanted to chime in about the gas tank. I was having the same problem with my gas tank in my 07 JK Unlimited. I thought it was a design flaw until I saw a post about it on this site. I told my dealer about it and they blew some pressurised air through the vent and heard a pop sound in other words they freed up some sort of clog in the vent. Everything has been fine since no overflow and it is nice!

My ex-girlfriend's jeep does this too... Should I tell her that's all it is to fix the problem? I think not... LOL!

On the transmission...Have the Lifetime Power train warranty (that is a good thing). So, I didn't have to pay a thing for that, other than the tow (very expensive) and a rental car for two weeks (also not cheap). I was hoping the dealer would comp me a loaner vehicle...nope. As to the post about my lift possibly causing problems, the dealer I purchased the Jeep from also installed the lift. I remember when I did it they told me it was a good thing I did it through them because they used MOPAR lift, so warranty would not be voided. At the time I thought it was a sales pitch, but in hind sight, I bet if I did it with someone aftermarket, they would have told me that was the issue. Lucky on that I guess. I am a bit concerned about the trans rebuild. Last night we had a nasty snow here. While in 4 wheel drive (hi or low) I heard clunking noises I have never heard before when in 4wd. I guess time will tell. And yes, I was told by the dealer that there was no such thing as a new transmission for any vehicle. They said if I did wait to get one form Chrysler, it would also be refurbished/rebuilt.

On the gas tank....they said it "had" to be replaced. As my "normal" warranty had expired, I worked a deal with Chrysler and the dealer so I would only shell out $100. Didn't want to pay anything, but $100 is way better that $800. Now I will see why the stupid "GASCAP" warning came on three days later.....and will see if Chrysler will give new soft top, as trans fluid all over the back of it.....more later....

When you were exeriencing your "gas tank overflow" problem was it only when the tank was approaching full? I am experiencing the problem even when the tank is on empty.

My 2007 JK required the gas tank to be replaced due to a sticking rollover valve in tank. Depending on how much it is closed and the velocity of the fuel, it could overflow at any time during the filling cycle.

Could my problem be that I flooded it in high water or just a coincidence? Please see "Sank 08" thread.

You can have my 2009 JK Unlimited. < 10,000 miles on it and already had my auto rebuilt due to overheating in 4H. Fenders falling off. No power. Low mileage. Piece of crap. All you get is the JEEP logo but beyond that you are driving a Chrysler in a JEEP costume.

Sounds like a jeep to me. Seems you wanted a chrome plated h2 or h3. Sale that poor jeep to a Jeeper who will care for it and get yourself a mall crawler and stop the whining. Boo hoo, your jeep requires work... no one will care more than enough just to laugh at you for buying what you cannot handle. Ha ha ha ha!

Catamountjk: Sorry you're having a hard time. Having a Jeep should be all around good fun.

That said, let me ask:

Was there a reason they didn't just install a cooler? This is a cheap fix to a known issue. See here and here.

What happened? They don't just fall off. Even if they did, there's cool replacements for them. You're under warranty by the way for body rust, etc.

Yeah, it's no race car. But have you tried one of these? What size tires do you have?

But a Jeep is a Chrysler. I don't get this one.

Where is that vent? Do you need to crawl under the jeep or is it where you fill it up?

Thanks
