Block heater

Anyone have one?? Do I have to have dealer install??

The block heater was already installed on my 2013 JKUS from the dealership.

The plug/wire was wrapped up and stuffed behid the battery on the driver side in the engine bay.

Check there first.

I found mine on a 2012 JKU just poking around under the hood after I got it. Mine was at the front drivers side.

The block heater in my '14 JKUR was installed by Jeep during the build process. My cord is on the driver side of the engine compartment behind the power terminals and washer fluid container. It is not near the battery as stated by the manual. You can see the cord on the pic with a red arrow pointed to it. The battery (located at the right rear of the engine compartment) has no block heater cord anywhere near it.

That's where I found mine in my 2012.

I ran my cord out to the drivers side of the grill for easy power plug in access.

Does this just go to a freeze plug location in the block? I didn't even know this was an option. My Jeep will sit a lot during the week in cold weather (I have a company vehicle) and this would be nice so the oil gets circulating quicker.

Sorry, as stated it is on the driver's side of the engine bay, but was not behind the battery (couldn't remember what I saw when I looked for it a month ago).


After thinking of the upcoming winter I was worried that I didn't have a block heater, so went out and looked for it. The dealership said that they are standard on Canadian Jeeps.

They are, in fact I think it is a rule for all vehicule in Canada. When used the right way, with a timer it reduces the emissions.

I know you have to pull the freeze plug and to do that, usually they have to drain the coolant and refill new stuff so there is an added cost.

I've never pulled freeze plugs so I'm not sure how hard it is. My guess is that its probably a dealer job

You have to remove a freeze-out plug to install it. If you want to get your oil circulating faster get an oil pan heater. My dad used a Wolverine oil pan heater, they're very good, and extremely easy to install, much easier than one that warms the coolant. It simply glues onto the bottom of the oil pan, and heats the oil. It is on the lowest point of the engine, and heat rises. To protect the engine you really are better off with an oil pan heater. The factory installed block heater is good, for warming up the cabin and getting the windows defrosted, but the oil pan heater is better for easier starts, and getting the oil warm faster. If I were you I'd look into the Wolverine oil pan heater. Both are good, ease of installation and better oil flow when cold go to the oil pan heater though. They're a snap to install yourself and no worries about a leaking freeze out plug if someone botches the block heater install.

Synthetic oil makes oil pan heaters redundant and they may interfere with skid plates/engine armor.

I'd opt for synthetic oil and a block heater on a JK with armor in cold climes.

Good point about the skid plates, but it still might be worth looking into. As far as redundant with synthetic oil, that depends on how cold it gets. When I lived in NY I always used synthetic oil, and noticed a tremendous improvement in cold starts and how much quicker the oil came up to temp when I went to the house my family had in the PA mountains during the winter.
