When you paint the top and fenders, well it just looks like any other SUV.
I even like my non-painted Black fenders and Black top on my Black Rubicon, because there is still a contrast there! I have seen the ones that are all painted Black and they just lack that pashas that makes them stand out!
After seeing all of these look alike comparison pictures, then I think that you are right on target with your statement of WHEN YOU PAINT THE TOP AND FENDERS, WELL IT JUST LOOKS LIKE ANY OTHER SUV!!!

I think if you are going to be a MALL CRAWLER, then a painted top and fenders with a lot of chrome would get a lot of looks from the crowds.
If you want your Jeep to stand out as a DD and off road usage, then painted just doesn't fit the picture. I am not going to do much MALL CRAWLING so I AM NOT IN FAVOR OF THE PAINT.

I fail to understand why anyone would bash another Jeep owner's personal choice?

I for one specifically purchased my Sahara with matching top (fenders come that way regardless). For me I am buying a Jeep. They are all unique and do not look like any other vehicle made - period. Who cares if it has a matching this or that. It is still a Jeep!

I personally don't like black fenders and the black hard top. I LOVE the matching hardtop. I like the switch to the black soft top for summer and love the matching fenders. That is me. However I don't bash other peoples choices.

I also chose the Sahara for the other features they offer. Remote start, heated seats, etc. I love it and it is personalized to my exact liking. If it does not line up with anyone's personal taste who cares? It is mine!

Excellent choice, I bought the same Jeep.

Just take it in context. Obviously if you like the matched better, then there are going to be others that like black better. I personally love my color matched top, but knew ahead of time that it would bring some light hearted mocking from some of the other jeepers. I also knew that about my 4 doors and even the color. I also knew that really it doesn't matter to them or me. I think it is all actually pretty good natured and here where there are only jeeps, something has got to separate us! Just how people are. But again, take it in context. Realize that the guy that is saying that he "hates" painted hardtops actually likes your jeep and would help you out on the trail.

I personally am pretty happy that I might actually be in the minority of people that chose a 2013 equipped identically to mine. (gecko, with match top, black fenders) I also see peoples point about the hardtop and agree. It sucks off road. The monotone look can make it look more like some other suvs sometimes (all silver 4 door and a g-wagon anyone?) Somehow I will live.

So anyway, take the comments with a grain of salt...

I just Ordered a 10A Rubi in Black with the color matched top, but unpainted black fenders. I saw a Black with the normal black hard top and didnt like the contrast. Had I ordered a lighter color I'd have gone with the standard black. My current Jeep a 2012 JK has the black top, with the Red body, it looks sharp.

I bought a white 2013 JKUR with the body colored top because that is what they had on the lot with the other options I wanted. The Jeep originally had a black top but the dealership had swapped it out with another Jeep to make another transaction work. I asked them to put a black one back on because i wanted the contrast and they refused but threw in the upgraded roof for no cost (additional $995 off the sticker in addition to Chrysler supplier discount, former military, etc). I get tons of compliments and I am really happy that I ended up with the white roof. I went with the soft top last weekend for the first time and I enjoy having two different looks. I may even go all white in the winter by plasti-dipping the fenders white!

Some of the comments here make me laugh, seems like it is my way or the highway or your trying to look like something other than a Jeep.... Mine is a single color, people come up to me on a daily basis asking what color it is and how "cool" it looks and what lift I installed. It is classy and very functional and for the people who mentioned not waving to Jeeps that are one color..... do you think anybody really cares... People buy what they like, not to please others, appreciate what they have just because it is not what you personally like there is no need to trash them.......

I think there are generally two types of jeepers... Those who like to look pretty around town and those who are serious about wheeling. Nothing wrong with either but its kind of a fun mini- rivalry. I guess some people just have really thin skin.

And for the record, I've never once seen a serious rig on the trails that was color matched other than company builds.

Heh heh!

How is the paint holding up on the body colored tops on the trail for those who have it? I have a black hard top and have had a hard time hiding the pinstriped marks from branches on the flat black but they buff out of the body paint pretty easily.

I think they both look good and it is a personal choice.

Mine is holding up great, any scratches easily come off with a clay bar or rubbing compound as they have not yet been very deep, when they finally do get beyond the paint then so be it. I wax all my vehicles 3 or 4 times a year so maybe that helps.

You are probably right.
However, there are plenty of Wrangler with black flares, black tops, lifts, 35's, stingers, winches, and more armor than Sir Lancelot who mall crawl hard, but love to talk down to those with painted tops.

I say...to each their own.

I'll gladly rock black flares and a black top if someone wants to buy me the Jeep. Heck, if I would have gotten Dozer, I would not have a painted top (and maybe not even a Sahara)...but I would still mall crawl.

Hold on while I find your serious trail pics...

Just picking! My jeep has color matched flares (sahara) and I would rock a matching hard top if I had excess cash for one.

And I do like my rig to look good. Just like yours looks good an you wheel

Just some evidence that it does see trails:

Does white top keep the inside cooler?

Does the white top keep the jeep cooler during sunny days?

I am looking to get an unlimited x in white with black leather. I live in southern cal where there is lots of sunny days and the jeep will be parked outside.

I think the white top keeps the interior cooler. That's the reason I went with the color matching white as sometimes I have to leave my dogs inside (not real hot days)

I'm thinking a Gecko top on my Rock Lobster JKUR would be awesome!!

Just kidding. Seriously, though, and all of this is totally subjective, IMHO a color matched top looks better on some of the more "bland" or standard colors, silver, white or black. I've seen solid Rock Lobsters and also Geckos and it's too much. For the brighter Skittle colors, the black fenders and top looks better.

Yeah, I have been wondering about this myself. Along with why someone would buy a manual over an automatic?

For the record, mine's a body color top and black fenders in billet. I love the look, but after all the pinstriping I've got now, I can definitely see the merit of a black top!

Tops & Fenders should always be flat black *or* removed all together.

IMO there are very few that look good with body color match, mostly the darker colors.

Touché. I like the black fenders on white and the tan colors but on my copperhead I like the body color fenders. I prefer black tops though I have a soft top so it doesn't matter.

Painted our CJ7 fenders to match body way back before painted fenders. Still like painted fenders and top-as the black ones are just too common. I suppose as more painted JKs appear they will begin to look common too.

What I don't like, is we're given just two choices for hardtops. Black or body colored. While one can contrast the actual body color with a black top, IMHO, it would be far nicer if a choice of colors were available.

My first Wrangler, there was indeed a choice of colors for the factory hardtop offered by Jeep. I got a color to contrast with my white body color/white fenders, the top was honey gold, and such matched my interior color of honey gold.

Personally, I just don't like basic black. Too generic or Walmart-ty for my tastes.

Choice. It's a good thing. My black Oscar-Mike has body-colored fenders and hardtop. It was a texture choice, and I like it. If you don't, I don't care. The bright colors benefit from the contrasting top. That's why black wheels are everywhere. Jeeps are like AR-15's. You can build them a thousand ways, but underneath, they are still a seriously capable piece of hardware.
