body colored top or no ?

just noticed today while looking at different dealer websites here in MA & NH and saw a few that had body colored tops. I haven't seen that listed as an option anywhere. Dealers had it listed as a $980 option where as just the black one is $735. I think it would be neat to be able to get a different colored top than the main body color. I am most likely going white with the black top and think it would be kewl to get a black painted one instead. Just think of the combo's ! Even better if you could order one say like a white body color with black painted flares and black painted top.

To clarify, the $980 is on top (no pun intended) of the $735.

In my opinion, the colored top is a must for the Sahara. I hate the colored fender black top look. For a Rubicon, I could go either way. It is not a choice for the Sport.

I'm the opposite way. I think the body-colored fenders and top make the skittles Jeeps look like popsicles. Horrendous.

I don't think they let you mix and match paint colors (hard top vs body) - and - IMHO the black wheel flares on a colored body give the jeep its signature aesthetic. I also was told you can't get the color top w/o the matching color flares. so that leaves a uni-color vehicle or a black hardtop and flares and any color body

I think what you are leaning towards is the right way to go.

Though to be honest, I saw the Clifford red one here online and it looked good and I could imagine an ice cream truck

but that said, I think you are leaning in the right direction to break it up with some black.

First, Lets all agree that jeeps are the best looking vehicles out there regardles of top/body color combo.

IMO, jeeps look better with some contrast. An all white Sahara starts to look a little like an ambulance, especially the JKU.

I am not a fan of the body colored tops or fenders. I like the contrast.

I specifically searched out the matching color Freedom top for a Sahara. To me the matching fender flares and matching hard top was a must. I am in love with the whole vehicle in one color.

I had 2 people say to me "Who buys a Wrangler that does not have a removable top?" Once they realized it was a matching color top, they agreed that it was much cooler than a black hard top.

However since mine is Dozer, with the top on I could register the vehicle as a mini school bus.

It took me awhile to find one without a color matched top....The black top is just more "Jeep" IMHO.

I don't think they will come like that but I bet you could order them from the parts department and they would install them. Just get one with a soft top and order the hard top in the color you want.

I just purchased my Jeep (should have it by Wednesday). It is a Mojave edition all tan. I love the matching top and fenders. Mine also comes with matching bumpers and mud flaps which I will be changing. I did like the contrast of the black fenders and top but I like the matching a little more. After coming on this site, I think I am liking the black top and fenders a little more than I did before. Hopefully after being on this site a little longer I won't wish I bought a Sport instead of the Mojave lol

And this is what I just posted about lol If I found one of these near me I might have done this over the Mojave lol Damn you!!!

I did get a good deal on my Jeep because it was "used" with 5,000 miles on it so I got more for my money than I could have buying new.

If you want a more sporty look the black top is a nice contrast for the Sahara. Solid color appears to more popular with 50+ years jeep owners. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but...............

I'm 29 lol I feel people either love the matching top or hate it. I don't mind the black top and like I said it keeps growing on me the more I hang out here. If I didn't come across the Mojave I would have been getting a 2012 JKU Sport.

lol .... els ....
i said same to my Wife when we saw one !
i sort of like the black rough top because here in the snow belt it will
make it easier to clean the roof off. no worries about scratching it.
i did notice the body colored fenders are an option on the Rubicon for $100.
this all came up because i priced out a Sport S with all the options
to make it like a Sahara (minus the colored fenders, 18" wheels,
automatic head lights and better shocks) and it is 2k less :-(
For $2000 I could buy probably better shocks & tires with rims.

When I purchased my jku in 2010 I chose between a black or white sahara. I liked the contrast of the white jeep/black rough top. Thought that the black jeep/black top lacked the contrast, much like the color matched tops do now. I pass by a white on white sahara every morning going to work, and am happy with mine.

Although, would be interesting to see a white sahara/ tan top throwback.

I bought a mojave, at first hated the white on white...the grey rims help contrast and the dealer put on black fender flares..anyway I kinda like it now..stands out from the other 3000 jeeps I see on the street everyday.

I got a Bright White JKU with body color top and flares. I figured I'm gonna run a soft top most of the year anyway, and I wanted something different (from my '07 JK). I understand why some people think "ice cream truck" or "Ambulance", but I like it. I can always plasti-dip/bedline it if I get tired of it.

Also, it really looks much better in person, the bright white really pops.

so seeing as this is a personal opinion survey ill throw in my 2 cents...im not a fan of the color match top. personally i like the contrast and find the color match just looks funny on a jeep. it dosent help i get flack from my freind that owns a YJ about how my JKU looks like a H3. that being said i do see a resemblance to the H3 and the JKU color match top....besides if you plan on taking the top off its just one more thing to have to worry about trying not to scratch, which if i spent that kind of money to get i wouldent be happy to have all chewed to hell

Only real problem, with body matched tops is if you plan to take it off very often. The top is easily scratched and gets chips from removing. Even being very careful it is hard to stop this. With the basic black, you can tough it up with a sharpie and really not that noticeable. With color matched tops it isn't that easy to touch up and make it look good. Not to mention trail rash if you take it out on the trails and the fact, it just doesn't look like a classic jeep but more like a hummer but some like that look. I guess it is a matter of taste but there are some real down sides to it also.

Had hard top but it hasn't been back on since I took it off last year because it is such a pain to remove.

So true; but then I have to wonder how many times you "classic jeep" owners come out of the mall and accidentally try to get into a Honda Element.

that's the one I'm ordering! White and Black...will get the Rims powder coated black as well...one thing I do not like about the "black" fenders and roof is that the sun can really cause them to get that dull grey look after awhile

A emphatic vote for body-colored tops here.
(I know when I was buying a JKU I did a lot of forum searching on the topic.)
Read on if you so desire:

For the record, body-colored or unpainted fenders are a toss-up IMO.
BUT, every single JK Unlimited was designed to look better with a body-colored top! The C-pillar is distractingly incomplete (too thin) without it. For those who insist that the unpainted top "breaks up" the color, it sure does - in a very unflattering way. The tires, bumpers, and windows do PLENTY of "breaking up" of the color. If I owned a JKU with an unpainted hardtop, it would be heading straight to the paint shop for a body-colored top. And if having an unpainted hardtop is "more Jeep-like", then I guess I care about too much about design aesthetics (pass the caviar, Blair... ha ha)

And I'm gonna take it another step further: The extra $1K for the factory body-colored top easily adds $10K to the look of the JKU. Want to make your JKU look $10K LESS expensive? Easy... go with the unpainted top. JKU Sport buyers can go on-and-on about trail scratching this-and-that, mall-soccer-moms and Hummer-wannabes that-and-this, but the bottom line is if you park 'em next to each other, I bet that 95% of folks would pick the body-colored top if cost was not an issue - just like a MacBook with more memory. A body-colored top will likely help your resale value in the long-run.

And that's my $0.03. A good ol' Peace to ALL Jeepers and their hardtops, painted and unpainted! (What do they say? Opinions are like a**holes - everyone's got one.) Cheers!
