Both tops at once?

Just bought an 08 Wrangler Unlimited X JK - got it home and noticed that the soft top had a notice on it saying it needed to be removed if the hard top was on - but here's the catch - the hard top has to be removed to take the soft top off. Dealer said nothing about this. Anyone else run into this little dilemma? It's winter here and I'm not looking forward to freezing my butt off taking on/off the hard top. Probably will go to the dealer and have them do and show me the right way. Any other guidance?

My soft top was not installed. The windows and stuff is in boxes and the frame is bundled in the rear cargo area. I would definitely ask the dealer to help with it as you will need a hand taking the top off.

Thanks Jase

The dealer should have gone over this with me but I think they were mad about the deal I ended up with (lol).

I have a question about the new Hardtops. I know ive been told you need two people to remove the new hardtops on the JK's...But if a guy were very patient and carefull, is it possible to remove and install the hardtop by ones self??

I suppose it is.....its not very heavy but its quite unweildy...I would think the risk of damage would outweigh the possible benifit.....takes about 3 minutes with air tools and an extra set of hands.....g

You just bought a 2008 Wrangler X, I would bring it in and tell them to take off the soft top and put the hard top back on as the note says. It doesn't matter what kind of a deal you made. They still made money off of you for buying a new Jeep. Buy the way ... congrates on the new jeep. Do you have any pictures to show us?

Very very nice. I Like the house too. Hopefully soon i will have a place out in the country again. I hate living in town. In 1997 my house was destroyed from a flood, I bought one in town after that, but i hate living in town.

If you have a winch from the ceiling, yes. If you have a bench the exact height of the bottom of top, you could be inside the jeep, lift it up and back slowly... otherwise, I wouldnt try it.

yeah, i'd make a simple table from 2x4's and get in the back and walk it off the jeep... or go to the dealer, but then you won't get the softie back in the jeep to get it home, i don't think. but there's no issue with leaving it on til spring, you'll just lose a little cargo capacity

Before you decide to manhandle it by yourself, just make it a point to check the rear body corners on a few TJ's and you'll see what almost always happens. Heck, it's still a pain with 2 people. That's why I got a winch hoist for the garage. Andy studad makes a good point, if the dealer takes it off for you, you now need a pickup to get it home.

There would be plenty of room in the Unlimited to get the soft top home from the dealership.. the rear seats fold forward and it could go in long-way

Hi All...

I'm new to the forum here and just purchased my first Jeep Rubicon (my dream car since I was a teen). Like BMBL_B, I also got the dual top and have both tops currently installed. I'm wondering if anyone's heard of how long I can leave both tops on before damaging the soft top. The manual says "an extended period" but did not define that time frame. By the way, I love the forum! So much great information. Thanks.

I had mine on for 3 months and did not see ANY signs of wear/tear. Unfortunately, if you want to remove the soft top, you really need to lift up the hardtop. They are wedged together extremely tight.

Thanks for the reply Jase! That is exactly the kind of info I need. You've put my mind at ease. I will switch the tops soon (since we're finally starting to see that big yellow ball in the sky again here in Michigan) but I didn't want to wait too long and damage the soft top.

In Nov./2007 I picked up my new 2008 Wrangler X, and asked for both tops.

I asked them to put the hard top ("Freedom Top") on, since, after all, it was "winter."

They helped me cart my soft top (SunRider) home and garage it, with the anticipation of putting it on in the spring.

I had four seperate repair events for the "Freedom Top" for leaking and gasket changes, until finally I told them to buy back the "Freedom Top" and "make a planter outa it, for all I care.

I asked for a new soft top (which now means I have 2), to replace the Freedom Top, and have been running with a SunRider soft top ever since.

AVOID THE "FREEDOM TOP" HARD TOP!!

I've only had my Rubicon for a few weeks, but haven't had any problems with the Freedom Top. So far I really like it. Actually, I just switched to the soft top a couple days ago (let's hear it for solar radiation in Michigan!) so I won't have the hard top back on until around October to see if any problems show up. So far from what I've read, it sounds like the hard top problems are hit or miss.

i also have a sahara with both tops... soft top windows were in a separate box... seen the sticker on it as well but the dealer said i can leave both tops in since the soft is folded and stored in the back, i woudl just loose some trunk space....have had it like that for couple months planning on taking off the hard top in a few weeks but shud i do it sooner now... also i had my freedom top leak 1 time and i mean it was pooring out, other than that no issues yet...
