Brand new 2011 wrangler dies on road!

My daughter has a 2011 wrangler automatic and was stopped at a light last night when the hot oil light came on along with a ding. Then the engine shut off on her. It would not start (no cranking even) at first then some cranking but no start. Road side assistance was going to be over an hour. After about 20 mins she was able to start it and drive to a better place to pull over. We were told that it would be an additional 45 mins since they never got the message that we moved it. (she called about it) At this point I drove it to the dealer as it did start and now the engine light was on but no hot oil light. The engine light stayed on for the ten min drive to the dealer. She is gone to get the jeep now after being told that they could not find any stored codes or any sign of anything wrong. Claim they drove for 54 miles and it worked fine!! Now what? So now I am guessing it will do it again when she is least expecting it and hopefully not in the middle of no where with no cell reception! So disappointing It has 10 miles on it last week I'm guessing it may have 100 miles now....

As to what the "HOTOIL" light means, go here and download an owners manual for your daughter's 2011. Use the "Find" function to have your computer search through the PDF for the word "HOTOIL."

According to my 2010 manual, it means "there is excessive transmission fluid temperature that might occur with severe usage such as trailer towing. It may also occur when operating the vehicle in a high torque converter slip condition, such as 4-wheel drive operation (e.g., snow plowing, off- road operation). If this “HOTOIL” message turns on, stop the vehicle and run the engine at idle or faster, with the transmission in NEUTRAL until the message turns off." It could mean something different in 2011, but I doubt it.

Thus, we'd need to know how your daughter was driving at the time to really have an opinion. Was she in 4wd? Was she coming off of sand? Was she towing? Etc. etc.

In any event, as to the general approach for fixing the problem, review this thread (http://www.wranglerforum.com/f33/hot...ing-65171.html). Assuming she was driving normally on the road, my view would be that this is a warranty issue and the dealer better fix it.

If you get the run around from your dealer, go to another one. They all honor Chrysler warranties and ought to be pleased to get the work.

stupid question, but she wasn't driving around with her foot on the brakes or the e-brake pulled, was she?

I'll ask another stupid question. I hopw she wasn't driving in 4wd on dry roads and /or over 50.

Not stupid questions were trying to help diagnose the problem for her because dealers are usually a bit slow in the know - Ask away! I think it's the hot oil issue from previous year JK models but I don't know for sure if the problem still exist on '11s.

My first thought was the oil and hot tranny issue but the second was what both have asked i.e. driving with parking brake on or in 4WD.

At this point it sounds like it's the operator. Could have also been driving around in 2nd by passing D with the shifter.

First the hot oil warning is in the manual same as 2010. It doesn't appear that it should shut off the engine and not allow a restart though. also the reason I posted was because even though she had that happen and then the engine light was on, the dealer gave it back to her today saying they could find nothing wrong!!!! She had driven from the gym to the market, shut off for 20mins got in and 1/2 mile down the road it shut off at a light after displaying that hot oil warning. Dry pavement in 2 wheel drive. Idk about the 2nd gear theory but it wasn't drven long enough and shutting down the engine? So frustrating,, she will trek back to central ny in a few days and just hope it doesn't happen again especially where there is no cell service!

It could be a faulty sensor. The engine shutting down or going into "limp" mode is to protect your transmission from further damage due to the transmission fluid getting too hot.

Nope, I am happy to report that even though the dealer could not replicate the problem and therefore made no repair, the jeep has since gone on the 5 hour ride to Syracuse and has been fine so far up there. She loves it! At this point in keeping fingers crossed that it was a one time fluke with the sensor. Thank you all for your help

Something is wrong..It happened before and it will happen again.. THEY (the dealer that is) NEED to fix this..Don't walk away form this because it didn't happen on this 5 hour ride..
I also suspect some faulty or intermittent sensor circuitry..

If the dealer is not forthcoming go up the ladder with Chrysler, where Quality is JOB #1.

I absolutely agree. As you mentioned yourself, you don't want it to happen again when you least expect it at the worst location imaginable.

Had something similar with a LR Freelander. For some reason, in the middle of the road it just died and did not start anymore. Looked like the enige was over-cooking. Dealer couldn't find anything. Couple of weeks I drove on without any problems and then it hit back when I tried to drive away from the gas station towards an appointment. Luckily I was in the middle of civilization, missed the appointment however. I brought it back to the dealer and didn't pick it up untill they, after hours of searching, found something concerning the bougies. if I remember correctly, wrong types were installed so under certain conditions they did not spark. Anyway: problem solved = peace of mind.

I love this sort of attitude. How do you propose they fix this? Yes, I do work in the auto service industry at a large dealer (Not Jeep). I drive many customers' vehicles home at night to duplicate concerns. I have driven some for over a week in order to duplicate/diagnose the concern. Sometimes it happens, other times it never shows while I'm driving.

In a situation where I am unable to see the vehicle "act up", there is little that can be done. If it is something we've seen before or there are manufacturer bullitens that describe the same sort of problem, I will "try" that repair as a possible starting point. But how are we to know if the problem has been fixed if it did'nt happen before or after?

All that being said....If the engine light was on when you took it in, they should have been able to pull codes to give them a direction to head. If you
see the engine light come on again, DO NOT shut the vehicle off when you get to the dealer and have them scan it before shutting it off.

If there were no codes and no check engine lights when you had it in, I'd suspect a possible intermittent ground concern.


Let me know if you need more info on how to "Handle" the dealer as I deal with these sort of situations regularly.

Why should I propose how to fix this "reliability" issue... The customer pays good money for this.. If a dealer cannot fix this, well get the Chrysler folks in action...SOMETHING is wrong and I feel sorry this creates some hardship to a dealership..

By the way, this is the only attitude a customer can and should have.. Part of Quality is "Customer Satisfaction"..

My only addition to this thread is to make sure you document everything. All phone calls, all conversations, people's names etc. In the event of issues down the road, it may come in handy.

Having gone through the Lemon process with Chevy years ago, one thing that helped my case significantly was my notes.

The part I do not know is that because I had to shut off the vehicle and couldn't get them to scan for code because it was after hours is that why there was no code? I was assuming that it got stored somewhere??

Remember back in the day when we used to be able to troubleshoot vehicles? 30 years ago if you would have delivered your vehicle to a mechanic-dealer or not-and told them it died in the middle of the road they would have dug around under the hood till the problem was discovered. If you would have told them a warning light came on then their job would have been that much easier. Now, you drop your vehicle off; they drive it around, hook it to a computer, and if there isn't a printout to tell them exactly what's wrong then they hand your keys back and tell you to come back if it does it again.
Who's going to go pick this girl up on the side of the road in the middle of the night when this issue manifests itself again? Probably not the pimply-faced "mechanic" who couldn't replicate the problem. I'm with the 'Goon on this one...take it back to the dealer and tell them you're willing to let one of their young daughters drive it until they find the problem.

It will get stored under normal circumstances. However if the vehicle looses
all power (Same as disconnecting the battery) the code will most likely be lost. Don't get me wrong, something does need to be done here. If brought to
my dealer with this concern, I would offer to personally drive the vehicle until the problem shows itself again. At the same time I'd be checking all grounds
and power feeds for possible shorts. It is hard to fix something that's not broken at the time. As has been said above, be sure the dealer is documenting all concerns as well as keep a log yourself.

Wish I had your magic wand. The unfortunate thing in modern automobiles, is so much is computer controlled. Intermittent concerns are a real problem. Lets say for the sake of argument all signs lead to a bad ECM. The dealer has no hard facts to prove this, but since Chrysler is footing the bill they put one in and write a story to have warranty pay. Now they drive the vehicle again and all is good. Release it to the customer, is it fixed? It may do the same thing in a week if the ECM was not the problem. Sorry if I seem a little defensive, but this is my day to day life. I do agree something needs to be done and I'm all about letting the manufacturer pay. Some situations do require some time to solve. I have gone through scenarios like this and it came down to a sliced wire at vehicle build intermittently shorting out.

I fully understand the frustrations with issues like this..
I have been there during my business years and know the issues and challenges very well.. But in the end the Quality is in the eye of the beholder and that is your customer.

I am convinced the issue as presented by the OP can and will be resolved once a logic step by step approach of problem resolution is followed. (s.a The IS and IS NOT discipline)

I have a 2011 jeep wrangler sahara unlimited bought brand new in march it has 3 miles on it had like 640 when I noticed check. Engine light was on ( not flashing) tho , I took it to the dealership (25 miles away) light was on the whole way they told me it was a heater circuitory ? Problem it is something to do with climate control I left it at dealership next day they say they need to order a new module?, I noted to miles on it when I left it.. It's a three yr lease that is fully covered I REALLY hope I have no recurring problems this is a NEW car it shud not have ANYTHING @ all wrong with it nothing!!!

I might curse someone the **** out at the dealership 4real!!!!

So, what if it was operator error. Say she had it in 2nd or in 4Lo driving too fast to have the HOTOIL light come on. Would the CEL come on for that and then once it cooled would the CEL turn off since it no longer was an issue? Same reason it wasn't stored? I'm hoping for your sake it was operator error.

Steady as you go chap. I can tend to feel this way when I am away from the dealer and blow off some steam. When I get to the dealer I ask politely and document document document. The only thing you do when you piss off the service department is make a name for yourself and you may not get the results you are looking for. Instead of finding the problem they are gristling with a customer and the two usually don't go hand in hand towards a speedily resolved repair. I went through a buyback on my original 08 JKU Sahara and I didn't raise my voice once and I can tell you, that, is out of character for me. It was one of the most pleasant customer experiences I've had with an automobile. And they made a satisfied customer out of me.

First, it's not a car. Second, things go wrong all the time. Be glad it's something minor and happened now while under warranty.

my wife's chevy venture had an engine coolant issue a few months ago. they flushed and replaced some sensors. about 20 miles after the repairs, the venture cuts off on her on the highway (going 45mph). she manages to pull over and gets it started after 10 mins. no CEL or anything. we call up the dealership where we got it repaired and the response was basically "bring it in when there is a CEL". i drove it for a while after that. had no problems since, which was about 6 months ago. i can understand the "bring it it when there is a CEL" response when someone complains of a weird noise or something. but when a vehicle dies on the road, how can a "mechanic" not find the problem?

If you've had no issues in the past 6 months how would you expect them to have found something where nothing exists?

Makes me nervous in regards to my Death Wobble issue. I took my 08 JKU to the dealer when it happened and they replaced the steering dampener stabilizer. Haven't had an issue since, but from reading here, it is more likely something else and this is just masking the problem. Wonder if I should head back to the dealer with some printouts from teh board and get them to do a full check on everything and make sure they document it for me.
