Broken Spot Welds

Appears that some thief tried to wrestle the spare off the tail gate. Put a small dent on the ridge just below the window but seems to have broken about five spot welds on the inside of the tail gate on the handle side.
Since you can't access the inside of the panel would it make any sense to drill small holes thru the center of the spot weld and put in sheet metal screws to strengthen the tail gate?
Repairs seem to be below my deductible so I would like to try this. Any experience in this?

We see black bears here in Whistler almost every day in the spring. Already checked tire for bite marks. Will get wife to get picture ASAP
I was just thinking about the grizzley comment, if you hid a sandwich between the spare and tailgate the tire would be in shreds.

Reminds me of that movie "Grumpy Old Men" where one of the old guys slips a fish in the other guys back seat of this wagon and it ends up rotting bad lol
