Bumper Replacement for 2012 Rubicon

Guys,

I had a minor accident over the weekend with my 2012 Rubicon and I need your advice on repairs. It seems that the only damaged parts are the plastic bumper, the metal piece behind the bumper (I believe it is called the beam) and minor scratches on the passenger-side bumper hook. I’m planning to visit the body shop at the dealer to get an assessment on the damages (as you know they are quoting arms and legs for the plastic bumper, beam and the plastic plate which goes under the bumper (the last one seems to be in new condition except that it is missing one screw). Any ideas/advices on what I should do from your experience. Your feedback is greatly appreciated. Also, how difficult would it be to replace the bumper/beam/plate on my own (it seems pretty easy as I can already see all the nuts/screws).

Thanks,

My deductable is $1,000 and the damage looks minor unless the dealer’s assessment proves me wrong. I’m also thinking about upgrading the bumper since it is time to replace anyway.

Check the classifieds, I've got a brand new complete bumper for $120 plus shipping. It will take you 20min to install. Piece of cake.

Seems like a good excuse to buy an aftermarket bumper, insurance $$ or not. That way, in the future, you can deliver the damage, rather than receive it.

Craigslist! as was said above, there are many people trying to get rid of stock parts because they upgraded.

well if you decide you want to stick with the factory bumper, i will sell you my 2012 jku rubicon bumper for cheap. I am "supposed" to receive my new smittybilt tomorrow and will have no use for the factory after that. my rig only has 700 miles on it and is still in perfect condition.

Let me know if you're interested sir.

I also have a factory 2011 jku rubicon bumper that needs to find a home, front and back bumpers. The rear has a minor dent from a small tree on a trail.

I had a friend crumple the corner front bumper on his 2011 and the local dealer tried to charge him $334 for a replacement OEM bumper. Within 20 min, I found 2 free ones from club members and CL for him.

When it comes to the JK, replacement parts are easy to come by. If not, go aftermarket.

Are you selling the plastic bumper alone or along with the beam ( the metal long piece where the bumper attaches). I actually need both - also please advise on the aftermarket bumper (does it fit on the original beam or what (I'm also thinking about installing an aftermarket bumper instead but still undecided)

Yes I will be selling the beam as well. I won't need it with the new bumper as it bolts directly onto the mounting plates that come off the frame.

The link below is the smittybilt src front bumper i ordered. Installation is very simple. You simply remove factory bumper and beam. There a 4 holes in the factory mounting plate, and you simply have to take a a step drill bit and expand the top outer hole on each plate to 7/16" and then mount new bumper.

I you would like my bumper and beam send me a PM and we can figure out a fair price and I'll send you pics if you like. It hasn't seen mud yet and is as spotless as the day i bought it 3 weeks ago.

Thanks for all the feedback. I think I will go with an aftermarket tougher bumper. I'm looking for a bumper that allows me to use the existing fog lights and it's sides cover the tires. Based on your experience, please recommend an aftermarket bumper . Also, does this bumper use the factory beam or does it come with its own. Last, does the bumper use the factory lower plastic skid plate or does it come with its own. Thanks

I would go with a Ace bumper. I'm getting the rock sliders from them next week and the next thing I get from them after that will be the JK Mid Width bumper with bull bar. Everyone on here has a lot of good things to say about them and it's highly recommended.

I have the ACE front and rear bumpers, they are 1/4 in thick steel plate. If you had those bumpers on nothing would have happened to ur jeep besides some minor powder coat chips....

You're going to find the under the plastic your "beam" is intact. You took a direct hit on the crush can.

One more Vote for ACE bumper. The price point is hard to beat. Coated, 1/4 thick steel, and looks good for one of the lowest priced unit for the JK.

I finally decided to get the AEV tubeless bumper along with their steel skid plate (1099 and 299 respectively). After a great deal of research, I learned that the AEV bumpers sold for 1,000 something are exactly the same bumpers that go on COD MW3 edition (dealer charges 4,300 for the MW3 bumper and claims that it is not the same - in fact, AEV manufactures the bumpers for MW3!!!!!). Now my issue is that, AEV website states that their bumpers fit 2012 wranglers built after 12/21/2012 without any modifications! I emailed AEV inquiring about my Rubicon since it was built in Sep 2011 and I learned that minor modifications are necessary since mine built before 12/21! They sent me installation instructions which don't specify the difference. Has anyone installed AEV bumpers on his/her 2012 wrangler? If so, was your wrangler built before 12/21/11? And what kind of modifications did you have to do? Thanks
