Bumpers

Ok, newbie here. I was researching bumpers and winches and while it seems a Warn winch is pretty much the thing to get, I remain clueless about bumpers.

There are short and stubby ones, wide ones like the stock bumper, full ones or tubular ones, steel or aluminum with skid plate or without.

Which one did you choose and why? What about the weight?
Did you change the rear bumper as well? Looks? Balance weight-wise?
I also saw that you can just mount a winch on top of the stock bumper somehow. Thoughts on that?

Please include pictures if you can.

Thanks!

AS far as front bumper, I went with this one
SRC Front Bumper JK - Smittybilt

Why? to save on weight and it protects the lower front end.The rear was this one just to match the look
SRC Rear Bumpers JK - Smittybilt

AS far as putting a winch on the stock front bumper goes, I wouldn"t do it. The first time you hit a tree ( and everyone does ) you will bend & fold that plastic and you"ll wish you had a real bumper.

Alex, your choice of bumpers is entirely dependent on what you plan on doing with your Jeep. Daily driver with mild weekend offroading? Serious mud driving? Rock crawling?

Stubbies are generally for tire clearance and to provide a smaller surface area for rock crawling, etc. The wider bumpers extend protection to your front wheels. Some bumpers weigh 100+ pounds, while there are aluminum versions (generally more expensive) that weigh far less.

Some bumpers may require you to modify your Jeep (mounting points, the vacuum pump on '12 versions, etc). Others will bolt right on.

Most people on the forum buy matching bumpers...front/rear. That doesn't mean you can't buy one brand for the front and a different one for the rear, or one for the front and NOTHING for the rear. Entirely up to you.

Looks are entirely subjective.

Starting to see a pattern?

You CAN mount some winches on the stock bumper. Again, your need for a winch depends on how you plan to use your Jeep.

There are even ways to modify your OE bumper into a stubby. Just be aware that the stock bumper is, well, not very sturdy.

Here are a few links to give you some idea of what people like (or dislike) about the various bumpers out there.

Front Stubby Bumper

Front Bumper Replacement

Rugged Ridge XHD

These links cover just a small percentage of bumpers available for the JK. Everyone can give you opinions, but if you spend much time on this or any other forum you'll quickly realize that everyone (for the most part) thinks "their" bumper is the best.

Visit sites like Quadratec, go to their section on bumpers, and see what's available. Then find out if it suits your needs. The find out how much it weighs. And costs. And if there are issues with it.

If you start a post that says, "Rugged Ridge XHD bumper system - likes and dislikes?" you'll get a LOT more input.

It took me over a month of digging, taking notes, asking questions via phone calls to manufacturers, etc, just to choose the bumpers I wanted.

And it was time well spent.

I got the stubby bumper cause I climb with mine, it opens up the tire up to objects that a bumper would get in the way of.

In short, you need to do your homework. It took me 2 months to come up with what I wanted & why.
It's your jeep , set it up the way that you like that suits your needs. And have fun with it.

I really liked that one, myself, especially the modular aspect. Only reason I didn't go with it was because of the long winters up here...first snow of the season usually Dec or so, then saltwater on the roads pretty much through April. I was worried about it getting into the cracks and crevices where things were bolted together.

Nice looking bumper, though.

I got the Rugged Ridge xhd to replace a jungle jim tube bumper that was on it when I got it.

I got the matching rear to help lower the back end but mainly to get the tire carrier to save the rear gate.

Can you help me understand your concern with the rear gate?

Aftermarket tires and wheels are often significantly heavier than their stock counterparts. At some point, you're putting more weight on the stock tire carrier and tailgate hinges than they were meant to carry, which can over time cause sagging, cracking, etc.

My understanding is that JK hinges are actually beefier than those from TJs and YJs, so aftermarket tire and wheel combos are mostly okay for the hinges. But the tire carrier will indeed apparently eventually have problems.

To respond to this, some aftermarket steel bumpers incorporate a tire carrier to replace your stock one that puts the weight of the spare tire and wheel on the bumper. Other companies have designed replacement tire carriers.

Safe is smart when dealing with Jeep parts.

However, I just looked up the bumper on RR's site, and it does NOT come with a receiver. If it did, they would have it listed under a separate mfr #, because it would cost more than one without.

It was on my short list when I was looking at bumpers, but I ended up rejecting it since I live in Wisconsin and the roads are basically covered in saltwater from Dec-Apr.

I worried about all the salt getting into the cracks and crevices where the parts bolted together.

That's right! You and your husband had the fender bender, IIRC.

I'd be surprised if you didn't get enough from the insurance to buy the RR bumper outright. If not, it should be close enough that you guys can make up the difference and eat Spam for only, say, a week or so.

Good luck!

I got a set of Rock Hard 4x4 steel bumpers. They were simple to install and come with a class 2 hitch mounted right to the bumper. Rock Hard is manufactured in the US which also factored into my decision. Only had them a few weeks now and like them my only issue is there isn't enough room to mount a plate between the fog lights. Still haven't figured out where to put it yet

Just to answer a couple of questions regarding the RR rear bumpers

11546.20 - Rugged Ridge Jeep JK XHD Rear Bumper - Designed to fit around OE receiver
11547.01 - New Rugged Ridge Jeep JK XHD Rear Aluminum Bumper Pods - Designed to fit around OE receiver
11503.15 - Rugged Ridge Jeep JK Rear RRC Bumper w/ Hitch - Has a hitch designed for bike racks, does not work the RR tire carrier.
11546.22 - Rugged Ridge Jeep JK XHD Rear Bumper Tire Carrier - works with 11546.20 & 11547.01
11580.10 - Rugged Ridge Jeep JK 07-11 Rear Hitch - Same as the OE hitch
17275.01 - Rugged Ridge Jeep JK Tow Hitch Wiring Harness

Let me know if anyone would like RR bumper quotes, need specs, stock availability etc.

Does anyone know if the RR XHD aluminum front bumper comes in a non stubby version? Or does anyone know of any other similar aluminum bumpers that exist? I like the idea of aluminum bumpers for weight savings but stubbies do not suit my needs.

check out the aev bumper with a warn winch. I have one waiting to be installed. FYI it will fit in the back of the jeep if you take it out of the box. AEV is expensive but i think it looks awesome.

Thanks guys. Since I want to keep the factory fog lights, I am torn between the AEV bumper and the Mopar off-road bumper. Does anyone here have the latter? What's your experience?
