Buy JKU Sahara MY2012 or 2013?

Hi,

I'm looking to buy my first Jeep, a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara and I'm looking for your help around the wisdom and pricing of buying a new 2012.

I have located a new 2012 JKU Sahara with the options I am looking for (and a few more ~$700) built in Sept 2011 and the dealer will sell for 3% below invoice. It's in Cosmos Blue (my first choice) which was discontinued for 2013.

Truecar tells me that I could get a 2013 at 2% below invoice (remains to be seen how this works out when I actually walk into the dealership). Seemingly the 2013 would be $500-$1,000 more expensive however it would not be in Cosmos Blue!

Given that this 2012 Jeep has been sitting on a lot somewhere for about 1.5 years:
- should I stay away from it?
- is the pricing fair?
- are there significant changes between 2012 & 2013 that I should be strongly considering a 2013?

Your help much appreciated.
Thanks!

I would try and get a muscled up warranty if possible, you will LOVE the Cosmos....I would know! ..... probably no more than a dozen new Cosmos's left in the country....I'd be all over that man. Pricing seems fair, and no major changes just little things like wheels.

Good luck

I believe the seats are improved on the 13s, but again very few Cosmos Blue. And I got 3.9% below invoice on a 13 10th anniversary Rubicon. It comes down to negotiation. And getting what you want. And I would want a good warranty simply because you will only be getting what's left of the 3 year warranty.

Keep in mind if its a brand new unsold Jeep, then the warranty has never started on it, and would begin once you bought it, so you would be getting the full warranty on it. Same with the free year of Sirius radio. Both start at the in-service date, which would be the date you bought it.

Part of your decision should include how long you think you'll have it. Once you drive it off the lot it's an almost 2 year old used Jeep, and there are a lot of them. Cosmos Blue is a very cool color, but the exclusivity on the brighter colors does not generally trend to better resale values.
If you're going to hold on to it forever, get it. If you will be trading in a reasonable # of years, a '13 might be a better choice for resale.
EIther way, check the online guides for the value of that jeep as a used vehicle now. Both private and dealer price. I bet the difference is less than what the dealer is offering and is closer to what it'll be worth in real terms. (At least that has worked for me over time).
One other potential thing on the early '12's is the 3.6 head issue. It's warrentied but a hassle to have to have that work done.
(free advice is always worth what it costs...)

Use Tread Lightly (or one of the many other Affiliate Discounts) and negotiate a bit more.

No way would I only pay 3% under invoice for a 2012. I got my 2013 for 3.7% under invoice back in the fall.

Many thanks for your replies, they've been very helpful in making a decision. I will forgo the cosmos blue sadly and the 2012 and build a 2013 in commando green or orange crush.

Unfortunately you can't build an Orange Crush anymore but you can definitely find one with a search of dealers nationally if you want one.
